Many years ago the “Ambassador of the Steel Guitar” DeWitt “Scotty” coined this phrase: "Jerry Byrd is Master of touch and tone". It is on JB's award plague given to him by Scotty in St Louis, MO That is true, but Gary Carter is VERY close to that also. For how many steel guitar players would risk playing "A Capella" and put it on UA-cam? But Gary's sound does NOT need accompaniment to make a song bring tears. Oh indeed yes. I could listen to him forever. There are no words that I can think of that would truly describe what comes out of his guitar. May Jesus continue to give this awesomely gifted man talents from Heaven. Praise Jesus.
This guy is like a brother to me. We sang and played and on and on. Everybody knows Gary is great. But this is his finest moment. The note choices the phrases absolutely perfection. Wow
I love anything that he plays, but this one just takes my breath away. I want to close my eyes to listen to it, but I can't tear my eyes away. I love the very ending where he subtly hits every single little note--gorgeous.
I’ve listened periodically to your videos throughout the last couple of years. Every time I find myself refreshed afterwards. Not to boost your ego, but, your musician ship and abilities on the steel are inspirational! 👏Joe Hartnett
Still remains one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard played by the master of this instrument! The ONLY song that I play for friends visiting or need just a good listen of a great piece of music!
Sheer mastery. I think Gary is my favourite player and this piece haunts me. Detuning the 10th to G# broadens the tuning so much! I won't mind if this is the last music I ever hear on Earth.
Thank You ! Finally, beautiful steele unaccompanied. Everyone plays along with cheesy backing tracks ! It's so darn nice just to here this amazing instrument by itself. Thank you.
What can be said that hasn't been said? Excellent, and very moving. Love the tone. People say it's the guitar. To some degree yes, but it's all in the hands really. You have the touch.
Brother, that’s some of the prettiest music I’ve ever heard. I understand you got to meet a Great friend of mine Wed. night after the show-Don Crum. He and I were babe mates in the early 2000’s. He was a really good guitar player back then......... He spent some time with Redd V. a couple years back and is now a MONSTER Guitar player. He just signed w/Doug Stone a cpl weeks back. I’m really happy y’all got to meet.I really admire your playing.Ive bought every CD you’ve had for sale.Hopefully we can meet one day. Be safe on the road!
Gary, you don't know how much this means to us steel players! We love to see your technique and listen to your outstanding tone. Please do the song "Stay" next. I've been working on that one for some time now. Awesome playing. Just awesome. Thanks again!
It would make little change no matter what he used. In other words: Gary could stretch a single string between 2 nails; pounded in a log by a hammer; and make sounds that would still blow our minds. And this would prove that it's in the hands; AND...also his feet and knees. He doesn't just play from the brain to his hands. He plays from his brain through his heart to his hands, feet and knees. One of THE greatest SG players ever.
That was the prettiest piece of music I've ever heard , Mr Carter
Truly one of the most beautiful steel guitar instrumentals ever recorded
Gary, please hurry and do some more of your amazing song arrangements. Your touch, taste and technique are beyond amazing and impeccable!

The best in the world.
Faultless, perfect in every detail

WOW WOW WOW Great job GARY!!!
I look forward to more videos please!
Just gorgeous!! :-)
Stunning Gary. I hope you'll be with Connie and Marty in Minot.
Beautiful
What tuning are you using? Not your standard E9. Trying to transcribe. Thanks
He answered that in an older comment.
He said it's an E9 tuning with the 10th lowered to Ab (or G# if you want to name it the other way).
I Love Gary's playing, he's one of the great steel players going, i don't think Gary's name gets mentioned enough.
AWESOME!!!!!!
Nicely done!
How's he getting that low G#? Has he dropped-tuned his 10th or is it on a KL? This is close to being the most beautiful peice I've heard on steel.
Oops! I see Gary confirmed my suspicion.
WOW!
Very nice, !!!!! and Tasteful...
Salvou o meu trabalho
amazing my friend
Wow!
Please let ut know what tuning you´re using on this tune. This is fantastic!
Supposed to be E9 tuning. Looks like he's using chord grips with his song, which is pretty cool.
I'd like to know if its standard or altered...
Caos, the tuning is pretty much a standard e9 setup with the 10th string tuned down to a Ab. Thanks
Great playing man
Great
Gary lays it down....
Deus Abençoe esse homem!! O único ser q não botou som de fundo amém
nice tone.
That sound is HUGE!!! What kind of amps and effects are you playing through?
It would make little change no matter what he used. In other words: Gary could stretch a single string between 2 nails; pounded in a log by a hammer; and make sounds that would still blow our minds. And this would prove that it's in the hands; AND...also his feet and knees.

Played as a true cacophonous dirge without a melody. !!!
