I saw a review of this figure a few days ago and the second I saw the notification for this review I thought 'I'm willing to bet Robo don't know Warhammer, but it's a cool looking figure'. Glad I was right, it shows off Robo's passion for the hobby not being at all restricted. It really does look awesome, your comparisons to DC, Marvel and Star Wars make sense (Book of Boba Fett episode 1 creature anyone?), but I could see it alongside NECA's Pinhead figure as a hell demon, or someone could repaint it into some kind of Symbiote type creature, or it's something for Hellboy or Spawn to fight.
Tyranid Genestealer: Exists Robo: "Robo don't know." I'm actually collecting this line. Thanks for covering it! Love the intro btw. Keep up the great work, bud.
This is what I was most excited for when MacFarlane got the license. Tyranids and Orks are right in his wheelhouse. Now we need some hormagaunts so I can build a sizable swarm
I bought the artist proof and love it so much I don’t only plan on buying a couple more, but sent some pics to friends and they bought it. None of us collect the warhammer line, and one of my friends doesn’t even collect mcfarlane. This figure is so badass, and fun.
Been waiting for a trusted reviewer to look at one of these.. not normally a McFarlane guy but these look like great army builders to go against pretty much any line.
Your initial comments on their function as moderately generic aliens was spot on. I actually picked up a pair of them to serve as "White Martians" in a display alongside Martian Manhunter. Edit: Ah, having reached that part of the video, I see that I'm not alone in that.
And at the $19.99 price point nothing on the market comes even close. The recent Hasbro price increase and use of the word "Deluxe" to hike it even more means fewer Hasbro figures on my shelf this year. And leaves more room for figures like this one.. The whole Warhammer 40k line are well built well painted and great figures. I do a bit of my own touch up to weather the armor and they turn out fantastic.
I'll cherry pick the ones I want but won't waste money on BAFs unless the whole wave is solid, which they usually aren't. Other than that, I collect other brands that I will support instead.
I don’t play WH 40k anymore but this thing is really good representation. I recently got one and I love it. It’s been hunting my GI Joes. Thinking about picking up another one too.
Ever since I watched that short film Astartes, I fell in love with the W40k universe. Glad to see Mcfarlane making action figures based off of it, hope to see more aliens/monsters in the future.
The Necrons are pretty good too. I got a few of the Flayed Ones and two warriors. To me they are worth getting. The Orks are also interesting for big bruisers if you want more creatures for your shelves.
Great review Robo! Your thought process for getting this was the exact same as mine, lol. Don't know much about the Warhammer story but the designs & figures are great. McFarlane is killing it with these and I can't wait to use the genestealer around my collection. I could see him fitting in well with Mythic Legions also.
These figures are amazing. This figure is actually why I started getting into Warhammer lore and media. I took mine though and painted it and added custom bits to make it into an Archville to pose in a fight with my Doom Guy figure in a ring of fire.
Picked this up off Amazon for $17 on sale and it's become my favorite figure of the year! I currently have mine sitting in a throne, reading the (Marvel Select Doom accessories) Darkhold and Book of The Vashanti. The open books fit perfectly into the Genestealer's bigger open claws. As an evil extradimensional horror to fight Doctor Strange, it's perfect.
I know nothing about Warhammer, but this is a badass Alien/Monster/Mutant-whatever your imagination can come up with- type of figure, and I dig it! I got 2 of these (more would be cool, but I don't army build) and the "Artist Proof" version with a different head sculpt. And $19.99 is Fan-F'n-Tastic! People are hating on McFarlane a lot these days, but personally, I've been buying a lot more McFarlane figures than anything else lately...
great review. have a few of these pre-ordered on bbts but they are not in yet so thanks for the amazon heads up. Genestealers are pretty much shock troops for the Tyranid army like the others have said they are sent in a head of the main forces to infiltrate and consume and hybridize with the inhabitants , they are definitely meant to have that crouched look over the standing upright. in addition there is also a grey Artist proof paint yourself figure with bladed arms (aka scything talons ) and chutuluesque style head ( I think called feeder tendrils)
Hugely appreciate the review. Nice to see this line get a video with Fwoosh's production values and Robo's insights. The line itself really does have releases that feel like McFarlane's bringing their A-game. For the price point, the Necrons are great and even the Space Marines can compete with the Bandai release with just some quick painting and a minor modification for ankle rocking; the sculpt has far more appealing proportions too.
I bought multiples, and the first one out of the box the arm peg broke as soon as I tried to rotate the arm, also the hips joints are now loose after 30 minutes of posing. I left the others in the box
Sorry to hear about the breakage. I hate when that happens. Re: the loose joints. Have you tried painting on some Pledge Floor Gloss. If one coat doesn't do the trick then apply more.
Great review Mr Robo, and wow that's a really nice figure. I may have to get one and paint like the original Genestealers from the 80s, because I am old and sad.
After the frustration at Todd's WTF thing about "scaling back but not getting rid of side eye, not going back to looking forward cuz 'it looks like a mannequin'" you mentioned in the weekly a few days ago, it's really nice to see just a really truly pleasing figure from McFarlane Toys. This thing's got great sculpt and paint, nice articulation integrated very well into the sculpt, just wonderful.
awesome looking alien. robo ... dude, you are cool man. i think i want this in my collection. i was in target sunday, but didn't see it. maybe my local comic book retail store or big bad toys may have it. keep rockin' dude.
I recommend watching a couple of a UA-camr called Arch his videos breaks down so makes it more convenient to understand and digest and the jeans dealers are actually pretty cool but my favorite are the space sharks their space Marines.
Bought 3 right off the bat, probably gonna get another 6 to army build, wondering when McFarlane is gonna release that Artist Proof with the Cthulhu head in a painted version to collect those also
Robo, I really like this guy. I also know nothing about the property but the figure looks awesome. I even got the artist proof and I almost always pass. I repainted my figure to the original colours used by Games Workshop. It's Tan/Bone Coloured with fleshing parts under the exoskeleton although i'd be tempted to add a red wash to it to bring it up to modern games Workshop colours. These are basically soldier Ants with a hive mind that can infect their victims or kill them and appear in swarms to overpower their prey.

They're basically the aliens from the Alien films.
Warhammer also have a team called the Cadians, who look very similar to the Colonial Marines.
Oh yeah, that makes sense, given the look.
