I actually thought it was Polish. But All the Balkan states have their own seasoning. Hungarian Paprika seasoning that usually in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box is good as a soup base and the de facto standard to season grilled chicken or Greek Gyros seasoning....also good instead of just salt on cooked eggs. Normally comes in a glass.

While the name might be Turkish and some old version of the dish, the burek we eat today is authentically Bosnian. Like kebab - yeah, comes from Turkey, but our kebabs and Turkish ones - different dish. When one says "burek" there is only one - Bosnian one. And it does not have as much meat nor that many spices and extra stuff that they added there.
It is very simple, fatty and unhealthy food, with lots of calories, and we LOVE it, all across the Balkans. But it is a Bosnian dish, not Croatian. Also, the thing they made, while probably delicious, would have a person from Balkan cringe. It is not supposed to have all those flavors.
Nobody ever puts vegeta in burek, very strange choice. And usually you don't put a lot or any salt if you're already using vegeta.

Vegeta ingredients - dried root vegetables like carrot, parsley root, parsnip, and such, turmeric for color and subtle aroma, dried green herbs, salt. You can make your own preservative-free version at home, but it is very hard to beat the original Vegeta. You can use it also to make simple vegetable stock and that is what grandmothers have been doing in traditional dishes forever. When you come to Croatia and the rest of the area the food will taste great not just because of Vegeta, but because the ingredients are first-rate.
Using the vegeta plant realy makes the "vegeta" flavor pop out.

I know only about Romania, my home country, we always use vegeta and barely use salt, since we like it way too much. It probably also contains MSG, since its just so good. We always use vegeta in soups, while making eggs, on beef, pork, fish, lamb, basically everything. It's also really cheap here, too!
Fellow Balkan raised kid here. Grandma and Mom would put this on almost everything. Still have some in my cupboard at all times.
This isn't just a Croatian thing. This is pretty common in lots of parts of Europe, especially eastern part. It's essentially one of the mixes that's commonly used as a "cheat" to make food preparation faster and more convenient, MAGI seasoning being another example of it that we've seen on your channels Guga (also pretty popular here in eastern Europe). It's usually used to help season different meats, or meat related things like soup stock or gravy.
If you're good enough of a cook, you'll be able to season things really well without it, but there are some dishes that Vegeta goes with extremely well and it's hard to replace with something else: for example my family loves adding this to potato pancakes instead of salt. I tried many things and seasoning when I started to cook more, but I never found a good replacement to season potato pancake batter with. The saltiness is perfect and the vegetable-like stock flavor it adds to them would be very hard to replicate without serious effort.
I was about to write that but not that well and comprehensively. I completely agree.
Yeah but it is originally Croatian...
@@MyRealName Am not denying that, but it's used hugely in Eastern Europe and variations of it that can be from elsewhere.
I agree! In Romania and Hungary it is pretty common, I guess other eastern European countries are no exception (Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine etc.). Also, there are versions with MSG as well!
This one is actually produced in Czech Republic. As you can see by the address on the bottle.
As Croatian.. I can tell you you did most things right. Usually burek would be more eaten as whole roll and by hands, and with runny yoghurt on side as a drink (tbh, I still prefer soda tho). As for vegeta.. try sprinkling some on the french fries that are just out of oil so some of it sticks, its amazing.
It's a dedicated veggie broth base mixed with salt, so a lot of natural glutamate is in there with a lot more flavors there to be the background support.
Europe has it's garum/liquamin sauces that survived to present day, basically fish sauces, but Mediterranean. And a newer thing is fermented wheat/grain mash that outputs glutamate dark sauce with quite a bit of salt added, Maggie is best known there, but you find varients, funny enough Podravka has one of their own I think.

You used the wrong dough, there are different kinds of Phyllo dough and what you used is more for sweet dishes like Baklava. For Burek it is thicker. You definitely want a good handmade and stretched dough for burek. Also, you usually don't pre-cook the meat and onions. It is all cooked together. Finally, you want to give a splash of water as it leaves the oven for some extra crispness on top.

and almost every large food store has a warm compartment for burek that you can buy and eat immediately
Really?
How did you discover it?
@@MaaNicoli probably from migrants, plenty of exYu came there in the late 80's and 90's
I’m from Latvia and same, everyone has vegeta here 😂
We are spreading more and more every day.... Maybe one day the world will be Slavic 😂😂😂😂😂
Next you should try "Fondor" by Maggi. Its a traditional german seasoning which usually goes with everything. You could say its the german msg and i think it would be a perfect candidate for an experiment!
Agree. DEW ETTTTTTTTTTTTT
According to the Austrian Turcologist, Andrea Tietze, 'börek' comes from the Persian 'bûrak', which referred to any dish made with yufka. This, in turn, probably came from the Turkic root, bur-, meaning 'to twist' - an allusion to the way thin sheets of dough had to be manipulated to produce a layered effect.
I've been waiting forever for this video. Vegeta on chicken cutlets cooked in a pan with a some butter is phenomenal and simple to make.
I have a recommendation for an experiment. It is a korean ingredient called Saeu-jeot. it's basically a fermented shrimp paste. It is used in almost all of korean cuisine from kimchi to stews, but I recommend it because it is a popular condiment for korean barbeque. It is salty, fishy, and goes well with any meat.
So glad you discovered Vegeta. Greetings from Croatia 👍
Doesn't matter how good the meat is having just salt and pepper would make it feel blend and tasteless. I grow up on vegeta and personally think it's the best spice u can add to food. Thank you for showing Balkan foods.
Greetings from Serbia!
Really enjoyed this video as a fellow Croatian :)
I live in Australia and I have a bottle of this in my pantry, I use it on chicken wings, In pasta, on fish, and in ramen N stirfry … basically on anything, OMG its Awesome adding a pinch into your mash potatoes even into gravy and finishing sauces
Vegeta is a must have in every Croatian home, we use it for everything. Super proud of out Vegeta and also our Zvijezda Mayo, people all across the world say it's the best mayo. You should try that too. Also you nailed the burek, though it's pronounced more like boorekk. Awesome video man :)
No one says boorek? Its quite literally bUrek. In Croatia to be exact. Turks say Borek and some Bosnians but its Burek for the most part
Great stuff,im really glad someone appereciates our cuisine!
As a Bulgarian, Vegeta is in the dishes of any Balkan country, just a staple in the kitchen. Amazing ingerdient, turns out for steaks it is great also
Hey Guga, I got your cookbook as a gift and made the korean style short ribs. They were so good that even my neighbor, a pescetarian, loved it. Your recipes are converting people.
Gotta love when they learn the beauty of meat
I’ve noticed the casual vegans/pescatarians absolutely destroy meat after a few drinks
@@respektfully I've definitely seen it on several occasions with a few different people. Hahaha
@@SimuLord new favorite Latin phrase thanks for this
Literally my favourite spice, I always thought it was Italian though. Also had no clue it was MSG, not that I know what that even really means, in Australia it says vegetable stock on the packaging so I just assumed it was supposed to be put into soup but I usually put it in everything, especially pasta sauce, never tried it on steak though, gotta give it a go when I get back home in like 10 months. Also if anyone knows where to buy this stuff in Japan let me know, I'm dying without it here
Big respect from croatia Guga!
Burek looks perfect and butter vegeta is something I can't believe I have never tried!
no one tell Angel that vegeta has vegetables in it. if he eats more vegetables, then he can go super saiyan!
Already for a Croatian like me I am very proud that we have a nice product like this 😍
Saying it like you made it
@@vukmijailovic1977 daj da pogodim, ti si iz Srbije?
Pa imamo mi puno fantastičnih stvari.
HOW CAN IT BE?! THAT SEASONING'S TASTINESS IS OVER 9000!!!
Really happy to see Guga try our food from Southern Europe
I've been watching Chef John for over a decade now. If you and him did a collaborative video it would be epic. Please make this happen! 🙏🙏🙏
Seriously
I have a metal tin that used to contain VEGETA. My wife used to use it in everything when we first got married 28 years ago. The tin is probably 15 to 25 years old. VEGETAt used to contain monosodium glutamate as a main ingredient listed just after the dried vegetables that are listed in parentheses on the ingredient list you showed. Cheers!
The ones I get in Sweden has MSG in it
The original still has MSG in it, but now there are versions without it
All post soviet nations use this too. We are all grateful to Croatia for this deliciousness.
I love how Guga always looks surprised when the boys go for the side dish rather than the next steak. 😮
I love that you used Vegeta, and hopefully it's gonna become more and more popular in the world.
I do want to make a few notes:
- don't remove Vegeta from the meat 😭 no need for that
- Personally, I'm not sure I saw anyone make the "butter-Vegeta" meat seasoning (at least we don't do it in my home), but that does look like an excelent idea
- burek (bOOrek) is originally a turkish type of meat pie, but here we advertise it as *Bosnian* national *dish* (it's not a side dish and definitely not Croatian 😅)
A few tips:
- Vegeta can be used in literally anything salty (soups, meats, fish, vegetables, sauces etc.).. there's a saying in Croatia that goes: "Kao Vegeta si.. u sve se mijesas".. in litteral translation it would be like "You're like Vegeta.. you mix yourself in everything" meaning that someone is too nosy, wants to know all the gossip etc.
- when putting Vegeta on meat, coat the WHOLE meat, that way you're gonna incorporate all the taste in the meat more easily and equaly. Basically, just massage it real nice into the meat. For vegetables, sprinkle Vegeta and just mix it with your hands before putting it in a pan (add a little olive oil as well)
- when cooking fish or grilled meat you HAVE TO try this mediteranean sauce: olive oil, fresh cut parsley, fresh cut garlic (don't use none of those american dried powders, trust me), Vegeta, a tiny bit more salt and pepper.. mix it well and pour over the fish/meat... I'M MOUTHWATERING ALREADY 🤤
- although I don't think there's anything wrong with the sauce you made for burek, TRUST ME it is best with plain, white, just out of the fridge yoghurt ☺️
- similarly to burek, you can make it with cheese, potatoes, squash, swiss chard or spinach.. however, if you're using some of these ingredients instead of meat, DON'T call it "burek" or else a horde of angry Bosniaks are gonna come to your door 😂😂 jk, probably not, but yeah, don't call it burek 🤣 it would be a cheese/squash/potato (etc.) pie. You can also combine, i.e. potato and meat, or cheese and spinach as well
Can't think of anything else right now, but I'm gonna add later if I think of anything.
And THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart for using (and liking) our culinary treasure 🥰
Yeah but the Turkish burek sucks not gonna lie🤣

@@ignlmao yeah, Balkan burek is better
I always thought Vegeta was a Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z ... This stuff looks pretty good.
Guga you make the Balkans proud! Come visit anytime 🇲🇰
Holy crap I didn't expect this :) I'm Croatian i didn't think vegeta is so popular o.o u even made burek omg. Altho burek is more of a Bosnian dish but is eaten all over the balkan. I would suggest u try čevapčići once atleast but also try bosnian recipie cause theirs are the best.
What would have made this video even better is if Guga invited both Christopher Sabat and Brian Drummond to taste the steaks. I can only imagine the hilarity of their reaction when Guga eventually shows them the secret ingredient he used in cooking the steaks, especially its name.
If you know, you know.
"It's over 5,000!!!!!!"
Guga you should try the MSG of Australia, Chicken salt 👍🔥
Vegemite more like it 🤣🤣
The Mitani brand, which most households have in their pantry, if he can get his hands on it.
Vegeta! What's it's flavor level?
IT'S OVER 9000
Clicked on the video for the dragonball jokes.
Good job Guga! This was great and i am glad you liked my country's msg.
Also here is a little help
It is pronounces boo-rek with a sharp e in rek
Funny story: one of my friends slipped on a burek in a bus and fell XD
The GE from veGEta is pronounced like gue in guerilla. :) Also when I first heard about MSG, I am sure I've read on the packaging of Vegeta that it contains MSG but I can't find it now. Perhaps they changed it. I see different sodium compounds now. In Croatian MSG is called - mono natrijev glutaminat.
yep the still sell it with msg 15% of it
Massively popular in Slovakia. Kucharek is similar. I put it in soups a lot.
Slovaks are Croats in denial themselves just like Hungarians, so no surprise there my Horvat brother
as a person who has requested this on your videos and always seasons steaks with vegeta how we croats would say: ovo je pre lipo i hvala ti.
i've requested vegeta as well :D
And i sent him a Detailed email explaining what Vegeta is, and how to use it on multiple recepies. Feels proud man!!!
Hey Guga, thanks for your great videos.
After watching your videos, I have three requests for future videos:
- Please try some other cattle breeds than wagyu and American beef.
- How do you clean all your pans and other cooking ustensils so they continue to be so shiny ?
- Please cook a foie gras in a terrine using sous vide.
And yes I'll repeat those requests often. ;)
You should try Sazón next. It has msg amongst a blend of other spices for that latin kick.
Yesss...I jus commented this...sazon n adobo r like the 1st spices u learn being Rican or Dominican...America born anyways...I jus fought out the main ingredient in sazon is msg...I've been eating it all my life ...have put it on steaks...but best on pork...n gotta get the o.g. regular sazon buy goya...
"Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his flavor?"
"IT'S OVER 9 THOUSAAAAND!!"
As someone with Serbian parents we have a lot of vegeta at home, and I still remember whenever my parents were making something and I saw the jar of vegeta I always used to eat it because it was so good.😂
Jeo si čistu Vegetu?
@@TheDennys21 Psihopatski 😂
@@OnionMilker haha
It's funny, in Croatia we season pretty much every type of meat with Vegeta, especially chicken. However I always restrained myself from seasoning steaks with Vegeta and always went only with salt and pepper because I thought Vegeta would ruin the essence of it and would hide the flavour of meat and juices. Now I might give it a go next time.
my polish grandma does everything with vegeta and it always delivers
So your grandma is Bulma?😏
@@22ninja1 tbh i dont know what or who bulma is, definitely not polish name
@@xMatiProKox I was kidding with you it's a Dragon Ball Z reference.

@@xMatiProKox you ever heard of or seen Dragon Ball Z?
I'm surprised you guys liked it that much. Here in Poland it's like #1 used seasoning, yet I don't find it super tasty. It would be much better without pieces of dried vegetables.
I like the dried vegetables 😂 I purposely add chicken stock when I cook chicken thighs cuz the stock will rehydrate the dried vegetables
Vegeta is mainly used for the soups. That's the reason for the dried vegetables.
Vegeta is usually used in soups, so the chunks of vegetables get boiled and come out soft. If you use vegeta as a seasoning raw, i suggest you use a wire mesh strainer to get the big chunks, just make sure its not too fine so you dont filter out the salt too
"To season it I usually keep it really traditional. Only salt and nothing else"
*proceeds to season it with garlic and pepper*
You have disapointed us my fellow mineiro friend 😔🇧🇷
I mean he said he USUALLY keeps it traditional. he didn't say he was GOING to lmao
@@Kyosumari you have a point lol
This thing was the key ingredient in our home cooking, thanks to this I started experimenting with individual spices
As a Croatian, I'm happy :)
But the burek pronounciation killed me
Nije ni Vegeta dobro reko haha
