- Deveaux Bank, South Carolina, was recently discovered to be the nocturnal roost for half of the entire Atlantic Flyway population of Whimbrel. New GPS tracking data from individual Whimbrel are beginning to reveal the intricate function and delicate importance of offshore refuges, like Deveaux, within coastal landscapes.

An important island to include in a reserve! I wonder if old oil rigs could be repurposed into similar habitat as a failsafe.
Its so pretty, and when they fly they go so fast on trans continental journeys, no freak storm can stop them for more than a wee bit, they are on flyways that connect hemispheres and that has always been, and will never ever stop, the mighty migration, the mighty BIRD.

Hey, human? Pick a local species you like and get involved with conservation efforts. Bald eagles were almost extinct once. One guy (Tim Wong) saved an entire species of butterfly. Indigenous peoples worldwide co-existed with ecosystems for millennia, and often retain the management practices to fix them. I presonally have a garden at most four metres square and besides growing me herbs I grow plants for pollinators and have a tiny, vertical compost heap, which is packed with native worms. I've had healthy bumblebee nests two years in a row, just from keeping a tiny green space in a concrete landscape. Hope doesn't fall from the sky, and acting like there's no point carrying as many of our fellow-creatures to higher ground with us as we can because factors out of our control (billionaires, late-stage capitalism in general) will kill what we can't carry discourages people from making the effort to fill their arms. Doomerism is polloution of the mental habitat; clean up.
