- It has long been debated whether the dragons of antiquity were real or merely allegorical. Unfortunately, most who aim to address their literal interpretation veer into the realm of fantasy and fiction, without ever duly considering the animal kingdom and the laws of nature. Similarly do the darwinists err when they assume that these myths may have been inspired by the now-extinct (and largely fictional) dinosaurs… As Occam’s Razor demands, there is a much simpler explanation to be had as to the consistent depiction of dragons around the world in ancient times.
The reality is that Dragons are Alligators. This would include all crocodilians but primarily the alligator and I will tell you why. While many are familiar with the alligators of the southeast united states, not many people are aware that the only other place on earth where the alligator exists is… China. The chinese alligator is a true alligator, differing very little from the American alligator but greatly from the crocodiles of Asia. It will here be shown that of all creatures which have lived on earth throughout man’s distant memory, it is only the Alligator which could have inspired the historical depictions of dragons, regardless of symbolism and allegory. Hearing such a statement for the first time, it is natural for one to retort with “what about the wings?” or “what about the fire-breathing”. These concerns among others, will be more than satisfied, and will serve to further pin down the identity of that reptile which did in fact inspire the universal dragon archetype.
This assertion will be substantiated not only mythologically, but linguistically, geographically, astro-theologically, alchemically, and anatomically. I should also admit, that I am not the first to postulate that Dragons are Alligators. It has long been recognized by the Chinese that their legendary Long or Lung was inspired by their own native alligator; an animal which is so critically endangered that less than 150 are believed to exist in the wild. So yes, we may have another Panda situation on our hands… Although Florida is not as associated with the Dragon as China, it is believed that alligators and crocodiles share a common ancestor in this state, for it is the only place on earth where they occur side-by-side in the wild. Let us now discuss the symbolism of the dragon and clear up some misconceptions about them, and in doing so uncover the true identity of this universal reptile. When I was a campus police officer at the University of Tampa, I had to rescue some students trapped in their cars by an unusually aggressive Alligator in the freshmen parking lot. I backed it down with harsh language, and my weapon at the ready. I really didn't want to have to shoot it, so I radioed dispatch to call animal control. Our dispatcher radioed me back to tell me that animal control didn't respond to calls regarding alligators. Dispatch had to call a team of gator wranglers for me. I thought they were pulling my leg, but sure enough, in about 20 minutes two of the most Billy Joe Ray Bob looking fellas I have ever seen jumped out of their 4×4. One was armed with a broom handle, the other had a roll of duct tape. They had that gator gift wrapped and in the bed of their truck in less than 5 minutes. At first glance I really had my doubts, but those guys made a believer out of me. They really were professional gator wranglers. I still didn't holster my weapon until the big guy was sitting on the gator in the back of the truck though. Momma didn't raise no fool. 😉

This literally could not have come at a better time. I've been on this trail since I saw the St. George-dragon-slaying statue in Stockholm, Sweden (and in Prague). The Stockholm statue has intriguing symbols going around it, and one of them is the phoenix! Among the other symbols are the Globus cruciger, and what appears to be either volcanoes erupting or pyramids with smoke coming out of the tops. Thank you for your perspective, Longo 😎

Yes, there are St George statues and depictions all over Stockholm but i think i know the sculpture you are referring to. It's bronze and in a pretty small medieval stone plaza near a lot of shops, no?

I've been to Alligator Mound. It is in the middle of a neighborhood. It is being used as a grass hill with a roundabout going around it. Oddly enough, there is a golf course right within stones throw distance of it. I wish we honored these places more. It seems crazy to me that people are allowed to build their homes/golf courses so close to or on these sacred sites. Preservation requires more of us.

The Critically Endangered Chinese alligator is the only species in its entire family found outside of the Americas. Its closest living relative is the famous American alligator.
Black Caiman 'crocodile' in guyana is more closely related to alligator when i googled. in it's own family; Black Caiman looks close to Chinese alligator.

I never believed in dragons fairies and mothman until recently. Get you a decent zoom camera or telescope and watch the sky for anything out of place mostly by and around the moon. if you chose to search for a man made canal(S) in ancient times, then i would think it's by lakes n rivers. ie costa rica, nicaragua, and maybe directly into gulf of mexico but i think that would have not been prudent. just my feeling. but i am sure they had canal or many canals connecting to pacific ocean from gulf and caribbean side. just has to be. no way they were seafaring alllll the way around cape horn. too long and dangerous. plus main cultures are on west coast of south america and central america. imo.

Fire video. I think I makes sense that people who were aware of the idea of dragons would mistake crocs and gators for dragons. At the same time it seems unlikely that so many different groups around the world would all be so wrong about the capabilities of these animals (flight, fire, ect.). Also the biblical punishment of the serpent seems to imply that the serpent was not relegated to crawling on its belly prior. Quetzalcoatl The feathered serpent depiction dosnt seem like it is an exaggeration of a crocodilian and can also fly. I think this could be a case of 2 things being true at the same time.
