It always amazes me how great golf instruction communicates the essence or core point of a movement. Johnathan has done it again. I was trying to explain the importance of the trail shoulder going down on the downswing (on a steeper plane than its movement on the backswing) to my grandson before he headed out the range with his friend. I will send him a link to this video that captures the essence of putting pressure on the handle at the right time. Johnathan gets it across so much better than I, an 83-year-old grandfather trying to explain it to a 19-year-old grandson. Johnathan is a plus 4 at communicating key movements that will help us no matter what our age. Thanks Johnathan.

I've been incorporating the pressure on the handle for a few weeks now, but I just realized, I probably needed to feel that pushing on the handle from the top. Once I did that, oh my word. Flush, long and happy. When you push or pressure on the handle from the top, it's much much easier to keep that pressure through impact which is why I'm hitting the ball so well.
What great distillation of the shoulder rotation down & up and putting pressure on the handle. I’m going to watch this many more times.

Thanks for braving the cold Jonathan. I do now see that my right shoulder must go more down and my left shoulder more up and out. I seem to come up & out too soon and do not stay down towards the ball. As always, practice, practice practice!
This is where I am most days for the moment so particularly relevant. Interesting with the right shoulder motion which is very important by keeping the club on plane with the right forearm lined up from behind and perhaps mostly to minimise the distance to the ball with the right arm still bent to maximise the pressure through the ball. Lots of detail in this Jonathan and need to watch a few times (and refresh regularly). I can manage this pretty well with shots back just to club horizontal and now looking forward to you refreshing getting down to this delivery position for longer shots without loosing the angles from the top. Well done!!
Best teaching. After applying your principle, I was able to get a 72% GIR. The course condition was bad on green so I two putted every hole.
This is all so good and very helpful Jonathan and has added a few crucial missing links which I now see need to be added to my swing. It is very easy to understand after your explanations how simple it is to have completely the wrong idea as to how to swing! Silly question perhaps but what percentage of extra power/distance can be generated by a correct pressured strike compared to a poor non compressed strike such as most amateurs like myself make? Why in the world are golf clubs designed so that you have to lean the shaft forward to hit it in the middle of the face? Where did this idea come from? I have looked everywhere for this but found no comprehensive answer. At least you have solved part of the puzzle for me.
There is no real alternative if you look at the rules and the swing dynamics. You should be swinging the club with your hands leading the club head.
Thank you Jonathan. I think I (kind of) worked this idea out through trial and error rather than via logically thinking about it, so it is excellent to hear you explain it from that point of view. It is warmer here (QLD Australia) but very wet - had over 750mm of rain in the past week, so practice will have to wait until things get less soggy.
The main thing is that you are safe and well!

This is what I would call the release position and from here you would release the trail elbow and wrist whilst straightening your legs for power and resistance.
This solved my lifelong issue of poor contact. Pouring my irons now! But one question, do I start my downswing with the ground force move or do that and the right shoulder simultaneously?
The actual sequence is first the move and then the trail shoulder but we are talking milliseconds so it should feel as if everything starts down together.
I get this. I can get forward lean in my practice swing. Put the ball there and I barely get my hands to the ball at impact never mind ahead of it!
Sounds like you still see the ball as the target, try and get yourself turning to the target and ignore the ball.
Try filming your swing from side on with a ball in position but try to hold the lag of the club so long that you miss it and go over the top. I guarantee you won’t be able to miss it but actually try to. You’ll soon feel how deep beyond the ball you can go with the hands. As he says your seeing the ball as a target but you almost have to ignore it, put the correct swing and the ball just simply gets in the way of the club path. Hope this helps.

No one finds it easy. I found the lightbulb moment for me and getting compression was the hands feel like they go low and left just after impact. (Provided you’re right handed)When you do your practice swing just get the feel for your hands and zone in to how low you can get them to the ground and to the left as the head of the club skims the grass/mat. The (left)part helps kick the club head out and also makes sure you don’t keep you’re left arm straight for too long and look like a cricketer! To do this you’ll need to hold the lag as long as possible. The skim should obviously start where the ball would be placed. You just have to find your thought process that works for you but as I say this was where it started for me. It sounds like when you have a ball in front of you, you’re not for example focusing on how low you can get your hands but thinking purely of hitting the ball. This is where the brain’s instinct kicks in and that can do horrible stuff in the golf swing.
I have found it very helpful if I imagine another ball just ahead of the actual ball and try and hit the imaginary one. You can also put a tee peg just ahead of the ball and try and move it with the strike.

At the start of your downswing your lead shoulder should move down, but then you have to get it up and out of the way to release and properly control the golf club.
Don‘t forget that OTT comes from your trail shoulder following your hips or your trail arm releasing too early.
@@JonathanTaylor63 Lead shoulder down at the start of BS is tricky. Can you refer me to one of your other vids or maybe do a new one? Easy to blow your sequencing when you try to focus on it.
If it would be easy, it would be called „Soccer“
I’m not trying to say this is wrong or right but definitely seems to go against what players/teachers like Jack Nicklaus, Mike Malaska felt/teach. Obviously golf is very much finding the right feels for each individual player and obviously feels usually don’t equal reals. Jack would feel like from the top when your back is turned about 90* and basically facing the target, he would “feel” like he kept his back there for as long as possible and through impact he’d feel like the buttons on his shirt were facing the ball or even behind it. Malaska also teaches a similar feel/move with the “over the top from the inside” move while feeling like the shoulders kinda stay closed and don’t over rotate. I’ve been playing better than scratch golf for well over 20 years and have tried every feel out there, some with more success than others. Many similar to what your showing here getting the body rotated open at impact or trying to get the club coming more from the inside, and usually my consistency gets a little worse and timing becomes a major factor. I have to say what jack and Mike feel/teach has me striking the ball more solidly, powerfully and consistently than I’ve felt since I was 18. Many of the moves are feel oriented and seem a bit backwards but when applied the “reals” are fantastic. Plus the clubface has been staying square for much longer basically taking the timing of a flip out of the equation. I think a lot of people are going to struggle cutting across the ball and relying on a perfectly timed flip to catch up with this opening move here because the club gets left so far behind the body, it can work, I’ve played many under par rounds with similar techniques but there is a more consistent and less strenuous way to square the club similar to Nicklaus. Also I’ve been seeing Rory and other tour pros practicing that same “over the top from the inside” move while keeping the shoulders closed when making exaggerated practice swings. Again not saying anything is wrong or right but I can see this going wrong for many players. If anything a kind of mix of the 2 swing feels because what your showing is a good move through the ball, just maybe to early.
Just back from the range, and clearly I’ve missed something here. I was only successful at burying the leading edge 2 inches, or more, behind the ball.
You have to get your lead shoulder up and out of the way to flatten the arc!
As a senior player I have trouble rotating what can I do ?

I have been practicing this for a short while and i am getting there. My impact on the ball feels sweeter and sweeter for every practice session. I noticed one thing, i seem to be hitting the ball much higher a lot quicker and a little to the left. It looks like i have gotten a much steeper launch angel, what could i be doing wrong?
Sounds a bit contradictory, usually a steeper angle of attack is what you would expect but with a lower launch angle. This can be rectified by moving the ball position forward. Try to get on a launch monitor to verify your AOA.
Been working on this quite a bit lately with my irons. I went and had a driver fitting and was told I was losing distance due to -5 AoA. How do you transition this move to a driver?
Get that lead shoulder up and you will change the AOA instantly:)

You added FAT shots from not enough pull from the left shoulder...and do you think thin, over the top of the ball, may come from ball position as I tend to play them all from the middle of the stance?
The further you turn your shoulders before impact, the further forward you should move the ball at address.
So you're actually bringing down the bend in the arm to the ball and then the release is the straightening of the right arm.
One problem I have is I tend to use the hand to push the club through the hitting zone and that throws the club path off just before impact. You actually don't feel any conscious hand action down there, do you? (You know, flipping the wrist)
Because your lead hand is pulling the handle up and around your body at the same time as your trail arm and hand are releasing the club should not leave the path. Sometimes we unconsciously block the lead shoulder which can cause the problem you are referring to.
@@JonathanTaylor63 My instructor tells me to keep the shoulders pointing slightly right of target as long as I can. I suppose he's just referring to the beginning of the downswing and I believe I do it too long and don't pull the left shoulder up and around sufficiently or perhaps at all.
I would talk to him about it.
Upon practicing the shoulder drill in my living room, I now find that there are times that I don't cover enough of the ball with my chest instead of feeling crowded.

I’d be very interested to hear your views on George Knudson and it’s Natural Golf Swing or Ernest Jones and Swinging the Clubhead. Do you believe it’s possible to reproduce this same mechanics just by using centrifugal force and clubhead inertia? I mean without any leverage/active hand action.

I will have to get back to you but centrifugal force and inertia are created by the swing, they do not create it.

Your body will definitely react to what your golf club is doing during the swing but almost every passive feeling is masking an active movement. Think of it as a dance with your golf club where you lead but occasionally the golf club may lead for a brief moment.
@@JonathanTaylor63 It makes perfect sense. In order to achieve the feeling of a natural, freewheeling golf swing, first we must groove the proper movements.
I’m 48, started playing golf 3 years ago and from the beginning I was aware there was a disconnect between my perception of the golf swing and what the good players were really doing. Since then, I’ve derived almost as must pleasure from studying and trying to solve the puzzle, as from playing the game itself. In the process I’ve acquired on eBay an extensive library of both classic and recent instructions books and I also follow some online channels. I find yours to be the most objective and clear of them all. Thank you very much!
