I grew up near Port. Our home was in the region for 55 years. We did all our major shopping in the town...the Co-op was big back then. Back in the 1960s it was a pretty town, not overgrown and not crowded by tourists, even during the summer holidays. Its focus was fishing and, in the surrounding region, dairy and timber and, for a couple of years, rutile mining along the edge of the coast between North Haven and Bonny Hills. Gradually over the subsequent decades it grew as more land was released by the Council for development and, like similar coastal town, the nature of the town changed and it became more of a mini-Gold Coast than a home to the long-term residents. I couldn't live in Port Macquarie now. Development has ruined it.
