What a masterpiece!
Rest in Peace Vera Lynn.
Happy 100th Birthday Vera, still our number 1 girl.
Very nostalgic, my lovely aunt used to sing this to my cousin and I when we were little; Auntie died a year ago, and now I'm 60 on Sunday, but very happy memories!
Dame Vera Lynn (born Vera Welch in East Ham) was only just 18 when she recorded this song. Her voice is indeed fresh and youthful, with original East End tonality. Right from the start she had perfect pitch and was one of the few dance band vocalists to have a successful solo career. She has just celebrated her 99th birthday.
I would assume that on the record label, she was billed "Vocal Refrain", as the common practice at the time was not to name the vocalist, even if they were well known and popular.
Red sails, the night wind is blowing
And clouds are hiding the moon
Above no bright stars are glowing
It means the storm's coming soon.
Red sails in the sunset
'Way out on the sea
Oh! carry my loved one
Home safely to me.
He sailed at the dawning
All day I've been blue
Red sails in the sunset
I'm trusting in you
Swift wings you must borrow
Make straight for the shore
We marry tomorrow
And he goes sailing no more.
Red sails in the sunset
'Way out on the sea
Oh! carry my loved one
Home safely to me.
And no wonder this lovely ballad has been sung by a list of legends
Red Sails in the Sunset was one of Vera's earliest recordings and is probably a collector's piece if you can find the original 78. It was recorded n August 1935 by the Joe Loss Orchestra. I expect it just said, "with vocal refrain." The record label and number (for anybody lucky enough to find a copy) is Octacros 1187.
Is this not the original?
This is a great recording by Vera. If you all love this one, have a listen to Al Bowlly's recording of it- his voice is incredibly beautiful!
I like your profile picture, do you mind telling me who this is?
@@leenmattar3983 i think that is Vera Lynn as teenager, I could be wrong, but those facial features look really identical to the picture in the video.
@@kelvinsurname7051 Oh, I'll check in google to make sure then.
@@leenmattar3983 it can be herself when she was young, but also any other famous female artists.
Words fall short...............Sublime!
At the time of this recording she is not yet a Dame. Yet, every human with ears can hear what she will become! Well, Dame or not, this Lady is simply incredibile! Her Voice carried millions of soldiers, in their task. Respect! To know her music is truly bliss!
Dame Vera Lynn Is a absoulute legend! my iconn!
wonderful
My mum was in the ATS during the war she was based in Aldershot, when there she got a band together, Joe Loss heard her sing and she recorded Red Sails In the Sunset with Joe and his orchestra, Vera Lynn could only dream of having a voice like my mum.
Uncle Albert brought me here.
Me too.... also 'I'm in the mood for Love' and hoping to find a slow version of 'Slow Boat to China'...they're all lively and up tempo...
Back when Vera was my age!
Love Vera...
This is actually the best she has ever made!!! Lament the ones who will never hear it...
