Jay walking is not a thing, it is just called "crossing the road"
Yes, US automobile manufacturers conjured up this and they were so powerful a new 'law' was made up so that people had to get out the way. A disgusting human rights infringing rule that has cost millions of lives!
Driving is a privilege, walking is a right. At least in civilised countries.
Yes we look both ways before and rarely get ran over because we can see what's going on
Jaywalking is actually an offence you can be charged with. It means to cross a road without due care and attention. If you step into the road to cross over and do not check the traffic and motorist had to slam their brakes on or swerve to avoid you if witnessed by a Police officer you could be charged with Jaywalking although it is most likely you would get a caution unless you were a known repeat offender.
Same as in New Zealand. You want to cross the road, the responsibility is yours. You cross when it is clear. Looking both ways etc. When I have visited the USA my friends just about had a heart attack when I just walked across the road when it was clear. LOL. I kept forgetting they are quite anal about that sort of thing.
londoners have no fear when it comes to crossing the road, barely anyone checks before crossing. everyone has the attitude of ‘go on hit me i dare you’

When you say its weird to be able to Jay walk imagen a British person in the US getting a ticket for crossing the road, we find that even more crazy from our perspective.
The term "Jay" was an insult in the early 1900's for a Hillbilly. This term "jaywalking" was invented by the automotive industry because new drivers with cars were running over your average citizen, who had anyways walked on the roads. Roads were there so people could travel! Rather then making roads safer for pedestrians, these big money companies publicly SHAMED the injured and dead victims, calling them "Jay Walkers", and had crooked politicians make it illegal to walk on a public road. Your tax dollars at work!
Only Americans would go to a major tourist destination and be surprised that it's full of tourists.
They're not tourists. Indigenous English people are a minority in London and Birmingham.

In most places jaywalking means crossing the road where you aren't supposed to- i.e. when you aren't at the corner/intersection or at a traffic light/stop sign. In many places, jaywalking is illegal but not always enforced strictly.

I got pulled up for it in NY. Only a strong Sarf London accent saved me from a ticket (or whatever they give you for it).

The point about tipping is mentioned sooo much when people visit England for the first time. It just doesn't happen. Probably because restaurants actually pay their staff
They obviously get paid in the US as well. What Brits don't realize is that servers in the US - depending on the venue - can actually make quite a bit of money on tips. I used to know someone who made over 100k/year as a server in Miami.
Actually we do give tips. .u just leave it on the table.
London restaurants stick on 15% service charge, which is contentious if paid by card as the boss might take it. We tip in cash. If it is deserved!
as someone who works in a restaurant in the UK i'd like to say that tipping is still super appreciated! yeh its not like required but always leaving a couple of pound coins on the table is always nice

As an English person when they said subway i genuinely thought they were about to go to subway
In my native Liverpool, our subway is the underground!
As a true (ex) Londoner, I also call it the 'underground' (what is a toooob?).
in London, a subway is an under road passage for crossing the road
And up north, Newcastle and thereabouts, it's the 'Metro'.

There is a simple solution to the problem of not knowing what way to look when crossing the road:

Yeah, as we were taught, "look left, right, left again. No cars coming, we can cross."
It's the other way round it is look right... look left... look right again. This is so you do not step out in front of a car, when you're standing to cross any road in the UK cars on the side that is closest to you will always be coming from your right. Unless you walk around backwards ?

To answer the taps question - Traditionally, hot water in buildings was boiled by either boiler or an immersion heater, before being stored in a hot water tank. The tank could build up sediment or corrode over time making the water unsafe to drink; so the cold tap was separate to provide drinking water. Nowadays houses are built with combi boilers which produce hot water on demand, so mixer taps are more common.
All cold mains water supplies in UK are of drinkable quality.

also you are meant to fill the sink to wash in, not just use running water. Granted most people dont do that... to be honest I dont find the dual spigot system a hardship.

Very close, the boiler was fed by a separate cold water tank normally in the loft. Thing were known to die in those tanks, not a problem once the water was boiled as any germs would be killed and you are not drinking that water. However a combined tap could cause cross flow and make multiple houses drinking water unsafe. The seperate cold system (in fact I was taught only ever drink from the kitchen tap) removed this issue. That said the house I grew up in had all of this and a combi tap in the kitchen, go figure.

I've often wondered what the term means, can't quite see how the "J" comes into it, though. On hot and cold taps -- they are clearly marked so no need to get them confused. More hygienic in my view than mixing up germ-free cold water with hot water full of microbes.
Look both ways before crossing. That literally what every UK kid is taught in school.
It is the same here in Austria, but we are taught to look first left then right, which almost got me to step into an oncoming car in England, where, I assume, you look first right then left.
The Green Cross code man says "look both ways".

That’s a literally what every American child is tight. Even if you are crossing at a crosswalk/zebra cross you are taught to look both ways. Because some people just don’t know how to drive LOL

Look both ways. And always look twice. and listen for approaching cars if able to discern the direction from it. (so in smaller towns its easier, London is very difficult to listen to everything all at once)
"Jaywalking" isn't a thing in the UK, we just cross the road using common sense.
The UK has very safe roads and is in the top 3 in the world for road safety. Jaywalking laws were considered in the 1960s but trials showed such laws make roads less safe and the reason is surprisingly obvious. If you have jaywalking laws drivers assume no one will walk out in front of them and take less care. Urban drivers in the UK know someone might chance crossing the road at any time and behave accordingly.

As a barista I normally don't expect tips from customers but it's normally putting the change in the tip jar or about 10p up to £15 depending on the order, how busy things are ect

I love that in the UK everyone thanks the driver when they get off the bus. Even the new arrivals pick it up pretty fast. Gives me a little hope in these dark times.
Of course we do, it's the way we're made 🙂
But buses now have exit door in the middle. So it's hard to thank the driver.

I live in Kent. The first few times I went to London it was a massive shock for me. Still is.
I've been to most other cities and totally agree. London is something else, I personally hate it - the thing that got me, getting told off for standing on the left of an escalator. 😂

In Hong Kong they have markers on the floor to stand either side of the doors and all the escalator handrails are automatically sanitized each rotation to stop germs. It's great!
As a Brit, when I was visiting the USA, I loved how the pedestrian crossings had a counter so you knew how long you had to cross the road. However I didnt think they gave enough time for people who are not very mobile. Thats why zebra and pelican crossings in the UK are great - you can take as much or as little time as you need to cross the road and you don't hold up the motorists for longer than necessary.

The mains water in the UK is extremely clean and drinkable. Years ago hot water was from a boiler in your house. If there was a mixer tap and it wasn't completely turned to cold you could be drinking water that had been sitting in the boiler, not ideal for drinking. Now though (new houses) hot water is heated instantly as required and mixer taps are more common, though I still run a cold tap for one or two seconds before drinking from it.
Also the hot water used to be fed from a header tank. These tanks were not always the most sanitary things and would sometimes contain dead rats and things.
You did not want to drink the hot water at all.
Modern mixer taps mix the water once it’s falling out of the tap so can safely be used with an old water system.
True. The cold water is always nicer after a few seconds running time (and don't you find that the water tastes great after a snowy day?).
Actually the same thing is applied even when the cold water is from the header tank which it often is in older houses away from the kitchen.
Its about mixing in the basin ... But that does require a plug to close the drain in the sink... Something missing in the video i notice.
Where sinks don't have plugs by design in such places as public toilets or Lavatories (NEVER "Restrooms") then there will be mixer taps.

I went to Wales and they were so much lovelier than the snobs you get in the country (though many in the English country can be sweet too). @@avapardy1471 No. That is just not correct. Tipping is not the norm, by any stretch of the imagination... I have lived here all my life, all 30 years. Tipping is normal is certain circumstances, i.e taxi's , or barbers (or hairdressers), etc, but compared the the USA, tipping is not a thing because the tips do not count towards their wages (like in most states in the USA), tips are just plain extra, like they should be.
Tipping is usually covered by service charge, which has become more commonly lately

@J M If the US food/service/hospitality industry has to rely upon the goodwill of its patrons to ensure its employees are properly paid, then it's not fit for purpose. The US is the only country I've visited (I've been to around 80 countries in all) where the so-called 'tip' is expected. In which case it's an additional, mandatory charge. A tip in properly functioning economies outside of the US is entirely discretionary and is given by the customer when they believe they have received exceptional service. The US 'system' (random, uneven, giving no proper planned income level to the employee) is entirely illogical. Restaurants, etc, should be paying proper basic wages instead of the daft way they currently do things.

Yes you tip, you leave it on the table, if the service is poor you don’t tip.
How much, approx 10% but more if you had really good service.
That's my rule of thumb! I'd be embarrased not to leave a tip so only rare cases where service has been diabolical if refuse to leave one . I'm from Scotland. We even tipped once in Edinburgh when a mouse ran in the restuarant as the waitress dealt with it well and basically gave us the food for free when Bill came so we gave her £20 tip for being so professional as all we paid for was the drinks.
I’m a Brit and in answer to your tipping question, this is almost never done buying just drinks, and never done in fast food places, but almost always done buying food in a proper restaurant with table service. If you’re paying cash, leave it on the table, or say ‘keep the change’. If it’s on a card, ask and you’ll be given the machine with a prompt to enter a tip. With the taps (what I think you call fawcetts), we have separate ones because houses used to have open hot water tanks in the roof, and it wasn’t safe to drink the water. By having separate taps you ensure none of that dead rat water is getting near your lips!
Or if you're paying card but have some cash, pay the bill with the card machine and drop some coins on table!
You mean cold water storage tanks but that doesn't explain it. It's just mixer taps didn't use to exist. They're right, I think it's anachronistic plumbing we are so used to we keep it going even though there are better ways (mixer taps) nowadays.
Aldo Zilli Yes. They’re sometimes called hot water tanks because, whilst they store cold water from the mains and are officially called cold water storage tanks, they exist to feed the boiler to generate hot water.

I hate mixer taps, always set too hot for me. I wash my hands in cold, and use soap to kill the germs.

@@NimLeeGuy Hot water is used in handwashing (and washing dishes) to melt fats and other substances to get them off your hands more easily, letting the soap do its work to get rid of the bacteria held within those fatty deposits. It’s nothing to do with killing germs directly with heat.
The tube is the world's oldest underground system, built in the Victorian era. That's why it's smaller than others.

The London Underground was built by actually tunnelling, where’s New York’s and some others were built by digging a trench and then putting a roof over the top, hence they are squarer.

At a sit down meal unless in a pub it's polite to give 10% tip, keep the change is more pubs and taxis
At restaurants they tend to add service charge anyways, so no need to tip.

The cold water is drinkable straight from the tap, the hot water goes through the boiler and sometimes a tank so isn’t safe to drink.

London is a very multicultural city but it's more likely you were surrounded by tourists

Geography is not a required subject in most states. According to U.S. News, “only 17 states required a geography course in middle school and 10 states required a geography course for students to graduate from high school.”
Most geography instruction is incorporated in social studies classes, and social studies teachers reported spending only 10% of their time teaching geography. History, civics/government, and economics are often prioritized.
But there's also the issue of what's even taught in that bit of geography. As in, how much is focused on the geography of the USA, how much is focused on the rest of the world, and how much is focused on rivers/volcanoes and other such stuff?
The reason for two taps is that in olden days the cold water came from the main supply and the hot water came from a tank. The tank was gravity fed so was much lower pressure. If you had a mixer tap, the cold water would push the hot water in the opposite direction and flood the hot tank with cold water.
US policeman: "yes, sir, you're free to walk down this street with a gun but if you try crossing the road God help you I will take you down!"

In the UK tipping is generally regarded as a reward for good service, unlike America where it's expected as the norm.
The American service industry should pay their staff a decent wage instead of relying on tips
And if you want to tip you leave it on the table on the little dish they give your receipt on. Some people like to give it before the payment so if the server asks how you're paying and you say "card" but you've also left cash she will assume that is the tip, otherwise if they say it's £20 and you leave £2 then they'll know the extra £2 is a tip for them

Unfortunately, my fear is that the western (American) concept of tipping has spread to other countries, due to Americans aggressively tipping regardless of what the locals do or don't do. This is why we will probably start seeing tip jars in countries that were previously thought to be non-tipping. This is really true about the London Underground! If you're not from the UK you might not know that it was built in 1863, which means it is a Victorian invention and design. The tunnels were designed to be as small and as curved as possible (for structural integrity). The trains are designed to be shaped like the tunenls so that they are as spacious as possible. CrossRail, that is currently being built, is far bigger because the tunnels are designed differently.
And it is the oldest in the world (Metropolitan Line). Second oldest is Budapest - third oldest is Glasgow.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that in England you just don’t tip. I would say this is like half true. You don’t have to but just leaving around 10% on the tray they give your bill on or by card is considered polite and respectful :). The two taps are because historically, you would get cold water from a spring or external source, whereas the hot water would come from the boiler that's usually somewhere in the house. The two are separated so that you dont drink the water that's from the boiler, the water tends to be less treated and it might have been sitting there in the boiler for a while meaning it isn't as clean. To wash your face stick the plug in the plug hole, turn on both taps and you'll get nice lukewarm water.

Also its worth noting that mixer taps produce naturally cooler water, by which I mean that if you were to fill a sink or bath with cooler water, even if it is what you consider to be an ideal temperature, by the time its filled up completely it will be cold or colder than if it were to be filled with majority hot water!
Wash your hands under the hot water tap until it becomes too hot for you then stop or give extra rinse under cold water if necessary.
In Britain, tips are for if you REALLY like the service.
In America, tips are service charge.

The two taps in the sink were common here years ago. Before you kiddos were born. In the 60's bathrooms all had hot and cold. You put a stopper in the sink and wash your hands and face. I'm 58 and remember it well.

Not all the Tube lines are that small.
It's mainly the 'Deep Level' Tube lines that were built with smaller bore tunnelling machines, so the trains are that much smaller to fit the tunnels.
The Tube lines just below street level (Circle, Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, District, etc...) were built by the 'cut and cover' method and originally were wider gauge tracks, so the tunnels are larger and the trains are of a more normal size - comparable with the NY Subway.

When crossing the road in the UK, you just look at both sides of the road. I'm assuming you would do that in any other country?
As far as the water is concerned: we generally use a little gadget known as a "plug" to block the hole at the bottom of the bath or basin. This stops all the water running out, believe it or not. I know, I know, it may come as shock to Americans, but the purpose of that little hole is to allow the water to go somewhere else WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED USING IT! If there is one thing that really gets my goat when watching American movies, it is the way your people waste water. You do not insert the plug and keep the tap (you call it a faucet) open all the while you are doing anything involving water. You will waste a gallon of water every time you brush your teeth. My wife might use about 200ml. I have no teeth, so I don't use any for that purpose. We each bath in about 15 litres (3 gallons) of water during the winter and less in the summer months.
How we put water into the bath or basin depends upon the season. In Summer, we run cold water first and add hot until it feels comfortable to use. In Winter we run the hot water first, as that helps to heat up the receptacle and then add cold as needed.

About the 2 taps for hot and cold: the tradition dates back to a time when hot and cold water were kept separate to avoid cross contamination. Cold water was deemed safe to drink and usually came from mains supply; hot water was not suitable to drink as it most likely derived from a locally sourced cistern that was usually placed in the loft/attic. It's a pretty clever design to be honest.

The are actually two type of underground in London. Sub service which use standard size trains just bellow ground level. And deep level Tubes which are the smaller ones you see there.

It's a fairly common thing to be told that, outside the US, wait staff are paid a wage they can live on, so they don't need tips all the time like the ones in the US who would starve without tips in many cases. We are told that this is because UK law forces this and since you have a lot of other social benefits like the NHS and help for the poor that the US really doesn't have in existence.

@@Philrc Speaking Truth is right!!! In the US servers are almost entirely paid in tips, which is often barely enough to cover costs. That's not the case in the UK as it's illegal, you have to be paid the minimum wage with tips on top, if that's not the case for you, you should look into your situation...

Tipping in the UK: if the tip isn’t already on your bill, leave 10% of the total bill in cash in the dish/tray/ whatever they give you your bill on. Or ask the waiter/waitress to add x amount (calculate 10% of the total bill) to the bill if you have no cash.

I always find the Jaywalking being an offence in the US incredible. You can own a gun. You've got to look after yourself, no NHS, minimum social security, you don't have to wear a seatbelt or a crash helmet but you can't be trusted to cross the road! 😂

There's no "Jaywalking" law in England we're taught how to cross the road from a young age. Tipping; Nowhere in the world tips like USA lol. It's rude to ask for a tip in Europe and its OPTIONAL to leave one. If you do come across someone complaining that you've not tipped you should complain to their manager because its not your job to pay their wages and its considered as begging.

I got an example of Wikipedia which I know isn't the best source but for background info: In Northern Ireland, jaywalking can be charged at police discretion and usually only in the case of an accident when clearly witnessed. Otherwise, Northern Ireland is essentially the same as elsewhere in the UK.
In my case the police where across the carriageway when it happened and witnessed the accident (it was a slip road of the carriageway at traffic lights. I wasn't knocked down on the carriageway)

Hot and cold water taps:
This is just a historic hangover from the house building boom from just after WW1 until the 1950s. At the time, purely because it was cheaper to install, most houses were built with a boiler that drew water from a storage tank, usually in the attic. As this water was stagnant (I.e. not fresh from the mains), it could easily be unsafe to drink, as it could have a dead rat or a legionella bloom in there. The solution is to have two separate taps, one for (non-drinkable) hot, and one for (drinkable) cold.
After a while, people just got used to it and grew to expect separate taps. It’s still the case that a lot of people think drinking water from the hot tap (even on mixer taps) is ‘unsafe’, especially older people.
Almost all these tanks have been removed, so drink boiling hot water to your hearts content.
To answer some questions:
1) Tipping - you would usually leave some money e.g. a five pound note on the table and wait for thr waiter or waitress to take the receipt.
2) Faucets / Taps - if there are two taps, we use the hot one, or you put the plug in the sink and mix the water until it's the right temperature. To be honest, its actually quite rare to see two taps in a bathroom because we usually only use one big one like everyone else
Late to the party I know, the reason British sinks have two taps (Faucets) is because cold water is supplied directly from the mains water supply, it is treated and is safe to drink making it a potable water source, hot water in a lot of the older buildings is supplied by a water tank, the tanks aren't regulated or tested and what water they do hold have at times become outright contaminated.
One case in Manchester found a family taken seriously ill, because the water tank in their home had about six rat corpses floating in it.
So in an effort to keep the public safe, cold water is completely separated from hot water to prevent cross contamination, that's why mixer taps are rarely a thing in the UK.

Two faucet sinks are not uncommon in the United States. I'm not sure how we avoid that cross contamination risk in the US but that's a not at all common event. Not sure if that UK explanation stands the test of time.
And good news you CAN get wall outlets with an operating switch even in the wretched United States! We call them GFI outlets. In fact you had some in every home you lived in the US. We only require their usage in places where water is likely to be splashed around like kitchens or toilets. Otherwise no. But you may choose to use them if you like. As to preventing accidental shocks to children we rely on teaching our children not to stick our fingers in the socket. We muddle through somehow..
Yeah that’s the long and short of it. Although a lot of people do have mixer taps these days, some people and establishments keep them to maintain a classic look. The cross contamination issue is becoming redundant because for a long while new boilers are combi and can heat potable water directly.
And pressure as cold is far higher so it would be hard to mix

The Tube is the oldest in the world, it started operating in January 1863. A lot of the tunnels are still exactly the same size as when they were made. Unlike modern systems in other places in the world, our modern trains had to be made to fit the existing tunnels.
We also don't generally tip, as most people are on salaries or paid a set amount by the hour (we have a minimum wage) rather than having to rely on tips for an income. If you want to tip, leave a couple of £ with your bill.

(the City and main central areas are ridiculously different to where I live)
Every child in the UK is taught the Green Cross Code:
1. First, find a safe place to cross.
2. Stand on the pavement, near the kerb.
3. Look both ways for traffic.
4. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Look all around again.
5. When there's no traffic near, walk straight across the road.
6. Keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross.

LOL with the two tap thing it goes back to when hot water was unsafe to drink, so had hot and cold water separate from each other so as not to get ill. Also for washing your hands with both hot and cold. Use a plug, fill the sink with some hot and some cold to get the right temperature you like, then wash your hands, pull plug, then quickly rinse off after with cold water. 👍

There is a strict code of etiquette on the Tube. As for tipping, it's entirely up to you, no one makes you feel wrong if you don't tip. I've never understood the dismay at two taps. Just put the plug in and use the basin. Some places do have mixer taps, but separate taps shouldn't cause you such anxiety, really they shouldn't.
The tube was invented in London - the oldest ones were originally dug by hand and had horse drawn carriages. That’s why they are small and why when we’ve extended an added new lines they still have to consider the size of the original to ensure the new rolling stock can be used on older routes/ lines.
Actually, London invented the underground railway but only carried mail at first. Liverpool had the first passenger-carrying railway system.
The Metropolitan Railway, opened in 1863, was constructed by the open "cut-and-cover" method, not by tunnelling, and it carried full-size steam-hauled trains. Baker Street station looks much the same today as it did then. The bored-tunnel small "tube" lines came later, the first being the City and South London Railway, opened in 1890 with electric trains.
