    Great video! No problem getting my partner to go camping. We met eleven years ago on a winter camping trip. She was in a small tent and I was using a hammock at the time.

    Awesome advice. We’d add: shammy towels are great for water absorption and can be washed and reused. Murphy’s incense sticks are good for bug repellent. And camping cabins are a good option for the tent-averse. (Usually have to take your own sheets.)

    Another good cheap not freeze dried meal is Knorr pasta sides. they are a one pot thing, and take 7 minutes to cook. If i want to bulk them out with more pasta, i start that first and when its 7 minuts til done dump in the package. Ive tried the rice ones but my stovetop burner is just too hot even on the lowest setting. Another trick is to steam veggies, add more water, make the pasta and mix.

    Camping is the best. The wife and I tented it for years and then bought a 40 year old tent trailer, which we just retired and bought a brand new 21’ trailer with plenty of room for the whole family. Lots of trips already planned. Watching this makes me want to go camping tomorrow.

    maybe it will be too much but having like an herb garden in your camping area could be really cool for cooking outdoors and also some herbs are like basil making bugs go away bc they dont like the smell

    For the toilet setup. You should be able to get biodegradable bags that you bury about a foot under ground

    • @headwerkn
      @headwerkn 6 місяців тому

      Far better to stow it out and deal with it properly. Turds and toilet paper still take years to decompose and can contaminate local water in the interim. Even burying in remote backcountry is increasingly frowned upon these days.

  • @AllistairMcCray

    Definitely check the forecast ahead of time. You could pack for 90 degree summer weather but it’ll be wet the whole time. You don’t want your first trip to be a miserable experience. The weather can easily make or break your camping trip. Especially the mornings and evenings.
    Most importantly. Always 👏🏽 take 👏🏽 your 👏🏽 TRASH! Don’t always rely on campgrounds to have trash bins. Some places don’t always have them and if they do they’re most likely always full. Please take your trash, even the things you think are “biodegradable.”

  • @deekamikaze
    @deekamikaze 3 місяці тому

    I guess I'm a little more extreme but the only things I bring are a -40°F rated sleeping bag, a lighter, snacks, water, a roll of toilet paper, a knife, and a firearm for protection which I have never needed to use but I'd rather have it and not need it.
    I do love making a fire and making good food if my partner wants to help pack in the stuff. We do one trip because I enjoy walking far from the car and we don't wanna make more than 1 trip.
    If you want padding in the woods the small branches the size of your pinky are perfect to snap off the trees and make a few inches of bedding which is actually more comfortable than my bed.
    Some of my friends start to enjoy my way of camping because I know what's edible in the woods around me and we usually go during meteor showers because it's really easy to be entertained when there's giant meteors shooting across the sky and since we don't have lights the wildlife will come up to the campsite and since we're respectful they haven't been disrespectful yet including an instance with a black bear that just wanted to say hi and see what we were cooking.

    Camping hacks. BTW I love those portable battery banks/generators they come in so handy, like for charging drone batteries. Is Chris getting back to FPV drones soon? Might give him a “fix” since the heli is still being worked on.

    I used to sleep in the back of my Vauxhall (equivalent to Chevrolet) Cavalier which would probably have fit inside your SUV rather than sleep in a tent, whenever I went away climbing for the weekend. Mostly because I hate sleeping in a tent but also after sleep walking inside a tent in Pembroke, onto of a cliff, luckily (and obviously) I went down hill and away from the cliff edge, or I would have rolled off the top!! After that I was banned from tents and it was agreed I was probably safer inside a car!!

    George Sears was a writer on camping subjects in the Adirondacks in the 1880's and said, "we're not out here to rough it, we're here to smooth it." He would have been impressed with your gear. Look for "An Adirondack Passage" 1994 by Christine Jerome, she quotes him extensively while on a 1990 canoe trip in the Adirondacks. And...Becki-have you read To Build A Fire yet? You still have an incomplete there.

    • @BeckiandChris

    I could deal with everything else, I think, but I just will never be ok with bugs, insects and the like. They've always grossed me out, they always will. But it looks like a nice way to recharge, get a break from everyday life and slow down.

    • @BeckiandChris

    Don’t be discouraged if your partner is just not into it. First time ever to the Grand Canyon my wife walked up to the rim, looked left, then right and said “that’s nice” and walked back to the car 🚙. She did however, loved the trip to there and camping in the desert just south of the Canyon. We got to see lightning ⚡️ over the valley for one entire night. Question: Where did you get the folding fire pit?
