  • EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #95: WETWANG
Oh how I’ve been looking forward to this one. Welcome to Wetwang - and this is easily one of the most peculiar placenames in the country. In some variations of local English slang, the word wang is used to describe a certain part of the male anatomy (you can fill that bit in yourselves, this is a family channel!).
As you can imagine that in itself can often leads to much mirth and merriment but when coupled with the word “wet”, well, all hell breaks loose! Once you’ve all got your minds out of the gutter, I can tell you the name has nothing to do with that sort of thing.
Wetwang is believed to have two possible meanings. The obvious one is “wet field” which would make a lot of sense given that nearby Driffield could mean “dry field”. The other is a bit more complex. It’s theorised by some to come from the Old Norse “vaett-vangr” which means “field for the trial of a legal action”.
Even the locals do sometimes have a laugh at the expense of the village’s name. One such man who was known to publicly was Richard Whiteley, the former host of Channel 4 ‘s Countdown. He held the honorary title of Mayor of Wetwang until his death in 2005. Paul Hudson, the weathercaster from BBC Look North, now holds that title.
Wetwang is a smaller village than some may think. It has a church, a cricket club, a surgery, a school and a village hall, but one major thing it lacks is a shop.
Let’s see what else its got, but don’t expect anything phallic!

I was not expecting a pun at 11:50, so it caught me really off-guard. As per usual with cheeky puns, I don't know whether I should laugh or be disappointed, but one thing's for sure - ya got me.

Good to see in more depth a place I’ve driven through many times. Also had fish and chips there. I got to see Countdown being filmed many years ago, it was very interesting.

Like a building, Countdown should have listed status!

How many times did you have to restart the video from laughing at the name? 😀

Only once actually, we were pretty good. Judging by the amount of views this one's had already, a lot of people like Wetwang!

Yes, you can't mention Wetwang without mentioning Twice nightly Whitely, he got that nickname in Yorkshire due to him also hosting the local news programme Calendar, which (until countdown got put on earlier) started just after countdown finished.

I'll never forget him saying it was more like "once yearly, nearly" later in his career. National treasure if ever there was one

@@TheVillageIdiot oh yes definitely. And he was, for quite a while, the slowest star in a reasonably priced car on top gear.
