I mean no harm when I say this but what makes the West Coast great has also been their downfall. They discuss murder, extortion and manipulation like it’s just the way of life. That’s a turn off to others who don’t live that way or understand the culture.
Cryrese is a whole fool but he is successful. He seems soft (nothing wrong w that) but growing up in Watts I’m sure was rough for his personality type. Everything his community made fun of him for Hollywood embraced. Many of his self esteem issues can be traced back to Watts. I’m not making excuses but as a Texan w family from Louisiana as well no blks are more color struck than Cali ones. I mean skin tone, eye color and hair texture is like your credit score.
The gangs have made Cali infamous and it overshadows the real talent there. It was Snowfall that sent me down my West Coast rabbit hole and I mean every time I look up there’s a new artist I’m loving, there’s more producers I’m learning about etc. the West Coast should have dominated the 50th Hip Hop anniversary but aside from their go to artists like Dre for example the roster was bare. So much of that is the rep for violence and foolishness.
I would like to see the West Coast dominate again in music tho. I’ve been living on those old school mixtapes. Lil Half Dead is amazing I didn’t know that was Nate Dogg’s cousin. See what I mean? Too much talent out there but they have no respect for each other. Where is the love?
I’m originally from California(the Bay Area to be specific) but you’re absolutely right about the west coast. ESPECIALLY that LA area. They are more known for their gang culture, extortion aka “check in”, violence, murder etc than the actual talent in the state. Which is crazy when you factor in that Black people only make up like 9% of the population in LA. Whereas places like Atlanta or New Orleans have a 40%+ population of Black people. I really want better for my people in general, but ESPECIALLY on the west coast. Because they truly are their own worst enemy.
I’m from his projects (Nickerson Gardens) it’s different down in LA, you just really gotta mind your business and stay out of certain areas especially on foot and at night time too. The people that’s banging really only going back and forth cause of somebody that passed it’s a cycle and it started for a myriad of reasons depending on the situation. Not everybody from the gang though is just killers it’s a couple of guys each gang that move that like that. Some gangs even killing each other too bruh, just gotta improve their situation economically
