I raced one of these on carpet for a few years and did very well. I only stopped racing it for lack of spares and the relative fragility of the irreplaceable shock towers
That’s fantastic! I just built my 501X a month ago (and reduced the value by half) and made exactly the same mistake with the diff! So funny.. had to take the whole side of it apart again.. anyway having the body painted up now - hope it turns up soon. Great video Gavin, love the work!!
This hits hard, Had a 501x NIB that I paid under $300 for but my Ex wife got it along with about 25 other Tamiya kits in the divorce. Nice to see a good build on it though!
@@RCKickschannelSometimes I also think it may have been karma, Another Tamiya club member I used to run with in California had a similar divorce and I bought a couple of kits off his ex wife a few years before my divorce in 2018 😂 Needless to say I lost my whole collection along with tubs of hop up options for pretty much every kit I had.
I really love the look of the runner one you bought, such a great looking car. If Tamiya would re re any of these TRF buggies they would not be able to build enough I think. One of them would be so good to get tho.
Amazing! I've got a 511 with the upgrade kit and it still does well against modern hardware at my clay club. It does lack some of the crazy adjustments available on say a b7 but it's still great and if you are a Tamiya nerd the only real.option.
Outstanding Gav! I have one I bought close to when they came out. I bought it cause I wanted a race spec Tamiya for a change. They go well, and I think they raced ok too. From recollecting what people were writing about them, nothing major had to be changed but there were a bunch of small things (ceramic diff balls etc). The chassis is a thing of beauty, the body not so, and farting around with diffs or changing the spur gear was a pain. Great vid and merry christmas.
Great looking 501X! I love mine, but you need a TRF511 with the Tamiya TRF upgrade chassis set with bigger gear diffs front and rear for racing 👍🏼 the front and rear shock towers tend to break easily, I use the thicker versions from Fibrelyte, and use longer Stainless hardware.
Awesome I personally could not think about taking a whole car apart on track day to change anything on that. Also shock standoff was obviously a design flaw as flex would mean shock oil/spring is irrelevant x-ray has a good tutorial explaining just that. Would I love one yes, I have a Super Astute on order and already spent £200 on upgrades before it arrives, all screws/nuts, turnbuckles, gears, shocks, wheels/tyres, alloy D parts everything. Logic says buy a Schumacher I know. And and apparently the chassis flex's too much. I think we're romantic people. Merry Xmas everyone
If you build a tlr two-wheel drive you need to pull out 16 screws before you can get to the diff. Meant to be a modern kit. Love the 501x. Special buggy
I cant get along with these modern bodys. I love the chassis and the artwork of the body. But for me the bodys look to spacey. I know im a vintage boy. Btw i just wanted to say thank you for your great content. Merry christmas everyone.
I can’t believe you don’t use an electric screwdriver to build all these cars. I can’t live without mine . I highly recommend getting a db01 rrr they just look so good all in black .perosnaly o would love to see you branch out into nitro and petrol buggy and truck
Not easy to find an RRR in the UK, I was lucky to find the RR. I do use an electric screwdriver, just not on everything. :) Nitro in the UK is not the best due to people getting upset at the noise and just giving you an ear full.
So for those of you that collect NIB kits.. you actually go and stare at the boxes? anyhow.. I hope you appreciate the fact that because I open, build and run my cars.. your NIB collection goes up in value.. apparently.. still not sure who would actually buy them 20 years from now.. 🖖
You can get a few Tamiya race buggy to run well but you will need deep pockets to get the same performance as you will be upgrading a good few expensive parts.
Also I know it's xmas eve but the Tamiya super astute comes with brass front wheel and steering bearings, Scrooge Mr Tamiya will be visited by ghosts gone past.
dear god please turn off this crappy AI video title translations, same goes to the german AI voice, it is terrible to listen to. and useless since most of your subscribers do understand english
Top work Gav! Cheers for the opportunity to help out with this 😁 really appreciate the mention too !
Most welcome and thanks for the amazing paintwork!
A dream kit for us Tamiya lovers - thanks for the great video!
I'll say one thing for Tamiya, they certainly know how to make some gorgeous looking chassis kits!!
Yep
Not a kit I was familiar With
but from what I can see I would say it’s definitely a high end tamiya kit unlike any tamiya I’ve ever owned 😂
I raced one of these on carpet for a few years and did very well. I only stopped racing it for lack of spares and the relative fragility of the irreplaceable shock towers
Any tuning tips for carpet?
@ gear diffs to start and trying out a one way pulley for the front axle part number 53952

I love mine, its a World Edition.
What a beautiful kit 👍 And the paint is top notch. Well done ✌🤝

What did she want 25 RC cars for? Wouldn't think she would want all the hassle trying to sell them on to make some money.
Ok yes
Ok yes
@@RCKickschannelSpite, Hate, Taking something that she knew meant a lot to me. There was more lost than just the RC unfortunately

Such a great looking car, fantastic build. If Tamiya bought out another TRF buggy I would buy it in a heartbeat.... ❤❤
After picking myself off the floor once I see the price, I would get saving myself thats for sure :)
Fantastic build! 🎄🎅
I always wanted a TRF501X. Good looking racer!

It reminds me of the brilliant Yokomo Mr4bx

Yes, I'm sucker of blue Tamiya 💙. For me that not a problem 😊
Yes you can drill the holes in the shock caps. Just need the little screws.
great video
Very nice! Though if you fill the shocks with oil will not affect how the car sit, springs and preload will :)

Love that 🤩👌👌👌
Nice work i loved the video and a merry Christmas
Happy holidays!
@RCKickschannel thanks
Tamiya TRF501X is one of the best ever Tamiyas out there. Bad news is you can't get it any cheaper than say $1k USD.

Not the best when it’s a racing buggy

U know when they put an X on it , it means business
Thanks mate!

Very similar to my Yokomo MR4-BX worlds car, I can't recall that being such a faff to rebuild the diffs and set the belt tension tho.
Stunning kit! Did you get one here in Denmark? :-)
Nice looking build. The shock cap o ring thing being wrong bothers me a lot more than it should 😬 😬
I will change them over but not tonight.
1ST!

Does Tamiya have a car even with every after market part available compete with associated TLR or Schoemaker

LOL. Tamiya missed Christmas as the Super Astute has slipped into 2025!
