  • Cauvery river in south India has been at the centre of a long running water sharing dispute between two states Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The Cauvery originates in Karnataka and flows through Tamil Nadu before joining the Bay of Bengal. But water levels in Cauvery have been falling due to insufficient rainfall and this has aggravated the farm crisis in both the states.
BBC Tamil service along with popular Tamil You tuber ‘Nakkalites’ Chella travelled across the state of Tamil Nadu speaking to farmers, farm labourers and family of a farmer who killed himself to find out the intensity of the crisis.
Filmed and Edited by: Premananda Boominathan
    Produced by Shalu Yadav
Assistant production: Muralitharan Kasivisvanathan and Vignesh Ayyasamy.

There is no denial of the hardships faced by Tamil Nadu farmers, but this story is incomplete.
You can't tell the story of the Kaveri from one region, go to Karnataka and see the agrarian crisis over there, 3515 farmers have committed suicide from April 2013 to Nov 2017. If you have channel in Tamil i,e. BBC Tamil channel that does mean you to report the stories from that region itself, try report in a comprehensive way.

True, it is not with TN alone. KA is also facing similar issues. I'm from a farming family in TN who like other Tamil farmers don't want to just take water from KA. I don't believe in surviving by killing someone. Instead of politicizing like Mr. Intelligent Srinivasan below. We should think for a long lasting solution that will benefit both the states. Long live farming and farmers of India

Even if we try to grow anything the crops die because there's no water in lakes, rivers and there's no rain. All the lakes are dried up. There's no water even in the borewells for drinking and for cattles.

Trees/forest are needed by the river to thrive. River half killed at the birth. 80+ industries in Nanjangud (near Mysore) dump untreated sewage chemicals in to mother cauvery. The river also receives untreated sewage in Mandya from paper mills and fertiliser manufacturing units. Bangalore, one of the major cities on the Cauvery’s banks is disposing 300,000,000 (30 crores) litres the river PER DAY. Remaining river killed at this point. Urban people don't like accusing them. Please start growing trees, stop polluting, start caring the river and stop the politics.

karnataka wants 50 tmc of water just for banglore apart from what they get for karnataka state. but in TN we have to fulfil the drinking water need for almost 20 districts incl the huge city like chennai with the meagre water karnataka gives.. apart from that we should do agriculture... karnataka politicians consciously converted huge acres into more agricultural lands over these yrs so that they can demand more water and do more politics with it.. many a times supreme court has given decisions in favour of TN's request. but karnataka govts have never bothered about it.. it has 2 built dams over the river wiithout the consent of TN, kerala, puducherry, Andhra or even the Central govts and is trying to build one more. It should atleast give the amount of water quoted in the judgement but it doesnt. It always says "when we dont have how can wwe give you".. it was never a matter of you have or not. its our right to get our share of water from kaveri.. your have 50 tmc then give us 25.. thats what we say... if you do that things will be even.. who is being unfair in this brother?? TN has got a higher portion of kaveri, Since the time of british raj.
Now considering the population of bengaluru i.e. 1.5cr.. It is important that the metropolitan gets a larger share to fulfill the water demand.
And i believe, that it is not very logical for 10 districts of karnataka and 20 districts of TN to depend solely on one water source.
There r various options for both,
      Rain harvesting
      Desalination plants
Fog/ breeze harvesting (which is done by african countries).

For showing the damage done to Cauvery at Karnataka, we need to make longer video.
We are getting enough rain in the western ghats of Karnataka. 30% of forest near the river is destroyed (#deforestation) in kudagu hill region for urbanization. Trees are needed by the river to thrive. River is half killed at this point. 80+ industries in Nanjangud (near Mysore) dump untreated sewage chemicals in to mother cauvery. The river also receives untreated sewage in Mandya from paper mills and fertiliser manufacturing units. Bangalore, one of the major cities on the Cauvery’s banks is disposing 300,000,000 (30 crores) litres in the river PER DAY. Rest of the river is killed at this point. Please start growing trees, stop polluting, start caring the river and stop the politics.

@Aralàn maybe Karnataka has water only for it's usage? Traditionally cauvery flowed 365 days of the year at a full flow, the water problem is very recent. Karnataka cannot capture an entire river and store the water in some secret facility. In rainy seasons the water does flow anyway. We can't blame Karnataka for our limited understanding of dynamics of rivers. It's time to approach the problem at a different angle and look at the root cause of the problem. And sorry I think corporate argument is very fair and well for Murugadoss film logic but in reality it doesn't work like that.

Yes, karnataka farmers are also in distress. No denying that, and the program failed to highlight that. The program also failed to highlight the following
      1. Usage of scarce cauvery water in Bangalore for local use - bathing, washing cars and even in toilets.
      2. Crazy sand stealing in TN along cauvery
      3. Failure of TN to revive local ponds and lakes.
      4. Completely irresponsible Bangalore citizens on not implementing rain water harvesting. By doing that, they will help farmers on both the sides.
      6. Lakes of Bangalore being turned into sewage hence increasing the need to use cauvery water instead.

Same is the plight of famers of Karnataka. We only hope every year it will rain good enough in catchment area so that water is released first to TN and then we can use the rest. Even Bangalore depends upon Cauvery water for drinking. What can humans do during draught year? who can win over nature? Only construction of dummy reservoir at Mekedatu can solve the problem of water crisis during draught.

I heard that Kauvery is contaminated with pharmaceuticals and other effluents . May be we should try to dig lakes and ponds to store rain water and do reforestation to retain and increase ground water and also protect elephants which are called eco engineers and tigers which regulate water bodies and other wild life which maintain the ecosystem.

agrarian crisis is faced by many states in our country, not only in tamil nadu. This is due to lack of water in our country as a whole.
But dmk is diverting the problem towards bjp in Tamil nadu.
Definitely water is very important for agriculture but there are many people who don't get water to drink.

Kaveri river origintes from karnataka kodagu district Thala-kaveri and flows through several parts of karnataka and tamilnadu . But the farmers here in karnataka have no access to our own river in many south districts such as kolar, chickballapur, bengaluru rural, here also farmers are dying. Lot of farmer community such as vokkaliga, gowda are prominent in farming they are selling their own land coz of scarcity of water.

Ever year, monsoon pattern is changing due to global warming and destruction of green cover and this leads to scanty rainfall. In future, cauvery water may not be sufficient to state of Karnataka itself and this may lead to hardships to the farmers of Thanjavur belt of Tamil nadu which is nicknamed as the rice bowl of southern India.

This is one sided review have u seen in Karnataka....more farmers have committed sucide because of it...My native region is mandya....this year during the beginning of the summer itself water has dried out.....and this water is used for drinking purpose for our major city. Bangalore...if there is no water in KRS dam...how can they release water...they are supplying the water required to you....but the River bed width is high...and majority of it. Is being evaporated due to heat... let's stop fighting ....and pray that this time sufficient rain occurs ..so both side farmers are happy.....Jai Hind Jai Karnataka

Bro, we are getting enough rain. 30% of forest near the river is destroyed in kudagu region for urbanization. 80+ industries in Nanjangud dump untreated sewage in to mother cauvery. The river also receives untreated sewage in Mandya from paper mills and fertiliser manufacturing units. Bangalore, one of the major cities on the Cauvery’s banks is disposing 300,000,000 (30 crores) litres the river PER DAY. Please start caring the river and stop the politics.
