when I was a kid old timers day at Yankees stadium was still something to watch. I will never forget in 1962 when Joe DiMaggio hit a home run in the old timers game, it meant nothing but I still remember my friends and I go screaming out of the house and jumping for joy
I am a life long Dodger fan. I remember walking home from school when I saw a billboard at at a local bar. The sign said that the 1962 Yankees had just beat the SF Giants in game 7 of the World Series. I felt absolutely fantastic. I was only 9 years and true to form, I hated the Giants back then. In reality, I have respect for all of the Major League players, no matter what team they played for.
As a Baby Boomer I can say in my lifetime, the '61 Yankees were the greatest team I ever saw. Yes, the game was different then but, not a weak spot in their lineup or rotation. The Maris/Mantle homerun barrage, 3 catchers hitting over 60 homeruns and Whitey losing only 4 games. The records just don''t stop. The movie "61"" was a great tribute as well. Hearing Bob Sheperd's voice again was incredible too. I remember him doing NY Football Giant games as well. "carry by Gifford, stopped by Bednarik"! Great stuff.
This may be by far the best ceremonial tribute that I've seen which most of the 61 Yankees have passed on but the memories will live on cause the Yankees pulled of one of the best seasons they'll never come close to again which in all the championships they won during a 15 years span this is at the top of them of the nine world series they won. Truly the Yankees are the best franchise in professional sports which they were some lean years but the magical season of 61 is by far their greatest season the Franchise has ever had.
Not a Yankee fan but it's crazy to see how much baseball has changed in 18 years. The faces that will never be seen again, the quality takes you back. But I was happy to see at the 2019 Old Timers Game that Bobby Brown and Don Larsen were there it's always good to honor those individuals who played in the 40's, And if anyone knows has Charlie Silvera made a Old Timers Day appearance recently?
Jim Bouton also owned big league cards, where he would make business cards, announcements look like major league trading cards. His office was in Teaneck NJ. I had my 3 boys birth announcements made by him, he was a great guy, kept copies of my kids birth announcements on the wall of his office with a bunch of other samples and always asked how they were doing!
You're right, he did. My mistake. It does sound like John Sterling, though. His voice has changed since then. He was 63 then, making him 85 now. Still has a helluva set of pipes. When I said it sounds like John Sterling, I meant the announcer.@@TimOlsen100
wow I had no idea Elliott Maddox would be part of this.. he was one of my little league coaches and I played against his son lol... not in NY or NJ.. but Coral Springs Florida lol
This just in, Mr. Kay: Graig Nettles didn't hit more home runs than any third baseman in the history of baseball. In fact, it isn't close. There were a couple of guys named Mike Schmidt and Eddie Mathews, both of who had retired long before this broadcast.
Posting 6-29-22 at 5:08 pm ET. The Yankees ran their current record to 56-20 after beating the A's earlier today. At that pace, they'll be 119-43 in the regular season, which probably won't happen, but this is shaping up to be a memorable season for them. I'll be happy if they can win at least two-thirds of their regular-season games and reach the World Series (which I hope they win, but hey, they haven't reached a World Series since 2009).
Just like in 2022, I got caught up in the Yankees winning games at a breathtaking pace and challenging the 1998 Yankees record. As I write this, the Yankees dropped 2 of 3 to Boston and 2 of 3 at home to Baltimore, the last loss being a 17-5 blowout. I fear what is looming, again. Update: The Friday night blowout loss to Atlanta continues this trend and the injuries are mounting. Carlos Rodon appears to be reverting to 2023 form. What is going on?
I'm a bit apprehensive myself. I was hoping that they'd win at least two-thirds of their regular-season games this year. It's still early, but they're currently 51-27, and two wins for every three games is super hard to pull off, even for the very best teams. John Sterling retired earlier this season. Hope THE. YANKEES. WIN. the 2024 World Series in his honor. Quite a set of pipes for a man of (and I still can't believe this) eighty-five. Posting 6-22-24.
If they could clone baseball seasons, the '61 Yankees should be right near the top of the list, behind the '27 and '98 squads. The '61 crew went 109-53 and won the World Series 4 games to 1 over the Reds.
During this moment the Yankees were 3 time defending World Series champions and 4 out of the last 5 winners. In the Free Agency era.. I honestly think that’s more impressive than when the bombers won 5 in a row from 1949-1953. Anyways, it’s an amazing dynasty to admire and cherish forever
Whoever wrote that script must’ve been fired after that day. @17:43 BIG ERROR or did Kay forget Mike Schmidt also played third base and was really good? I respect Nettles I really do but he’s not even close to where Mike was with the bat
A let down because the Yankees lost, right? Because I’m a big fan of the team and still thought the 2001 fall classic was amazing. As a Yankee fan but more importantly a baseball fan, win or lose, it was an amazing series to watch and watching those players put on a show made it an instant classic
It sure was; up by a run , in the ninth in game seven, with a chance of winning their 4th in a row, and Mo throws a sure double play ball into center field......I'm still not over it
Man, Kay was having one awful day. Johnny Blanchard didn't hit 21 home runs in 100 at bats. Not even close. It was 243 at bats. He has to stop using those record books put out by Ripley's.
One other thing. I wasn't even born in '61. The Yankees lost the '60 Series to the Pirates, but as a Yankee fan, I think I can speak for many of us when I say that the '61 squad more than made up for it!
when I was a kid old timers day at Yankees stadium was still something to watch. I will never forget in 1962 when Joe DiMaggio hit a home run in the old timers game, it meant nothing but I still remember my friends and I go screaming out of the house and jumping for joy
The heart and soul of the Yankees infield and the only player to be named World Series MVP on the losing team(1960). Bobby Richardson.
My eyes swelled up when Yogi was announced.

Tom Tresh was one of my favorite all-time Yankees and a great baseball name
Holy Cow he DID IT! Never forgotten.
That was a historical feat and call by the Scooter.
The resemblance between mickey and his son david, is incredible
And in less than 2 months after this event the world would change forever.

Ball Four was a fantastic book... loved Jim Bouton may he RIP.
I;ll bet he didn't get any handshakes, from David Mantle
Jim Bouton was an exceptionally gracious man. I met him at the WTC at a breakfast back in October 1994 and he was super nice.
It's not over till it's over
Maybe it would be appropriate to point out that Torres won the clinching game six of the 1977 Series? Small detail.
Was that John Sterling announcing Bob Larsen (20:46). I read that John Sterling was born in 1938. What a set of pipes for an 82-year-old!
He said the proper name- "Don Larsen".
You're right, he did. My mistake. It does sound like John Sterling, though. His voice has changed since then. He was 63 then, making him 85 now. Still has a helluva set of pipes. When I said it sounds like John Sterling, I meant the announcer.@@TimOlsen100

when bob sheppard would read out the passed away names from last old timers day. like being at a church.

Wow 👏 ... Stan Bahnsen and Jim Spencer
34:42: Billy Crystal speech😄
god they dont make em like they used to...the old stadium is...god...gotta be there to really know it i guess
Especially before the 1974-75 renovation, when it really was "The House That Ruth Built"
7 weeks later the world changed forever
Facts.......... Facts I remember that day.
I commented 3 years ago in this thread that it was one of the final Pre 9/11 events on film captured today.
If they could clone baseball seasons, the '61 Yankees should be right near the top of the list, behind the '27 and '98 squads. The '61 crew went 109-53 and won the World Series 4 games to 1 over the Reds.
1939 Yankees were the best
@@mariopadilla2412 1977 -1978 is the best?
The music during the moment of silence is very moving
and less than two months later the world changed

Man...just bout 6 weeks later NYC was attacked. The world/ NYC was never the same again.
Whoever wrote that script must’ve been fired after that day. @17:43 BIG ERROR or did Kay forget Mike Schmidt also played third base and was really good? I respect Nettles I really do but he’s not even close to where Mike was with the bat
Of course you are a MORON! Mike Schmidt did not play for the Yankees. This was a New York Yankees Old Timers Day, not Philadelphia Phillies.
Add Eddie Matthews 511 HRs to that list.
This was before YES and Kay became rich
Yea in 2002 the Yankees was so weird.
No Kubek or Richardson?
Bob Sheapard, the voice of God
Wow...looking at a pre 9/11 America the Beautiful.
Alright David and Kevin!!!¡
They had cameras in 2001?
Yes and years before that
Whats a CLUNTCH? 25:09
Of course, this Yankee year they won the pennant. But it was overshadowed by 9/11. The World Series that year was a let down.

Where's the rest of the introductions ?
Man, Kay was having one awful day. Johnny Blanchard didn't hit 21 home runs in 100 at bats. Not even close. It was 243 at bats. He has to stop using those record books put out by Ripley's.
Jim Bouton is also one of the inventors of Big League Chew bubble gum.
Bobby Murcer:….”where do I go Scooter?”
Phil Rizzuto…”out by the monuments…that’s where you belong”
So who said what to Joe Pepitone that he replied, “shut up”?….😂😂😂😂
Anyone know the title of the music during monent of silence ?
Ave Maria.
@@alexsmuckler8556 thanks
Blanchard, "21 home runs in just 100 at bats" -- I don't know...... :-)
(He was good but not even the Babe was that good!)
try 243 at bats!!
Still not as good as the juiceman, 73 homers in 475 at bats. Insane
The announcement is wrong. 243 at bats.

Emceed by John Sterling & Michael Kay.
We saw that, Will.
Where was Phil Rassuto?
Back When Kay's forehead was half its size 😆
4:01 4:28 4:53
The 1998 team was better
No Canada
Michael Kay is the worst!!!!
