  • The Los Angeles Police Department released bodycam video showing their SWAT team shooting an allegedly armed suspect, 54-year-old Leron James, on May 3. Central Patrol officers responded to a backup request from the Los Angeles Fire Department about a suicidal man. Upon arrival, the man pointed a gun at officers after they tried to speak to him, prompting officers to request additional backup from the LAPD SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiation team. The SWAT team used a chemical agent in an attempt to coerce the suspect out of his apartment. The suspect responded by shooting his firearm out his window, at which time an officer shot him. Officers pronounced the suspect deceased at the scene. No officers were injured during this incident.

I agree with you about the balance but this situation was at a point where it was very binary. You either do what we say or there is a consequence. I've worked as a mental health technician and a social worker in a psych hospital for more than 6 years. Scenes like this are common in our facilities except instead of s gun they threaten or use chairs, pencils, water bottles, belongings. We use excellent de-escalation techniques but sometimes the intrusive thoughts are too much and they still try to lash out at staff and other patients. At this point staff will have to physically restrain patients and use emergency medications to help them come back down. In this scenario when they are at our facility we know the police have already screened and patted them down for weapons. Adding social workers to police calls would undoubtedly help with de-escalation HOWEVER once a welfare check escalates with a firearm or other weapon all that has to go out the window to ensure the safety of bystanders or residents in the area. That is the reality that people don't want to swallow that once it gets to a certain point the threat to human life exceeds the need to treat a person in the field.
As someone with that much experience the best way to have episodes like this to stop is to expand mental health care and make it more affordable. It is much easier to prevent diabetes than it is to treat it once you have it. Same way with mental health making it easier for people to get help before it turns into a psychotic meltdown would make all our communities safer.

Snipers are pretty common in residential/suburban areas in situations like this. Growing up in my old neighborhood circa 2003 there was a house across the street that always seemed to have some sketchy stuff going on every week or so. Cars would come and go in the middle of the night, people running up the driveway into the garage and immediately leaving, etc. So it was obviously some kind of drug operation. One afternoon there was an altercation that resulted in someone being taken hostage inside the house (a pizza delivery driver, if I remember correctly) and tactical was called on scene. I was in middle school at this time and I was just coming off of the school bus which dropped me off usually a block away from my house, and once I approached I could see multiple cop cars and a SWAT van parked on our street half a block away. From what I'm told, there was a sniper perched on the roof of my family's shed in our back yard. No shots rang out fortunately, they were able to flood the house with gas and take in the suspect without any casualties, but that was a pretty scary afternoon! The cops were pretty nice too, they offered me a ride to my aunt's house down the street since I wasn't able to get to my house behind the barricade. After that, the sketchy activity dropped significantly and we didn't have to worry as much.

that " shot fired" was not from his weapon, his weapon was allegedly a handgun, definitely a small handgun, maybe 9mm or smaller. The shot that was "fired" sounded exactly like the chemical agents they fired, that was no way a handgun round. That round's report was far too loud for a small handgun. To be honest the picture they showed with the "suspect" with a handgun didn't even look like a gun. I highly doubt he had a gun, the cops definitely had a lack of communication with the swat members, who didn't even look like they were focused on their AOR at all times. This was way too sloppy, i would bet anything that " Round fired" was the chemical gun.

Conventional situations only need conventional solutions. This situation the individual was in could have used some more in depth grounding techniques. Things are happening fast, he was hearing voices "in his head", or misinterpreting sounds from all the commotion. The goal would have been to focus his senses onto a single task. Trying to legibly hear multiple voices, with pain from chemical gas, with the sight of men who may change your entire life, is not grounding, but quite the contrary. - in this situation, though the responding force didi not have the equipment, after the suspect pulled a gun, could have been tranquilized instead of gassed with pain.

You will be in constant danger. You will have to use your service weapon, and no it doesn't feel good like when you cheese the enemy team in Modern Warfare. It hurts you deep when you kill someone and you spend a good part of your life wondering what you could have done differently, regardless of "it was your duty" or not. Most times you use your service weapon as an officer, its not against a rabid serial criminal. It's against a human being who is going through a very serious mental health crisis. Yeah if the officers didn't shoot that dude he probably would have hurt someone or killed them. Im just saying when your the Hero, it doesn't feel heroic. I know this.

They tried everything. Too many lives as risk to allow him to continue to live. They simply had to put him down. It sucks he had issues, but the more unfortunate issue was that he got his hands on a gun...and since he wouldn't give it up, there was simply too much risk to innocents for them to do anything but put him down.
Honestly it was a very good example of excellent police work. They did everything they could to deescalate and try to get it resolved without violence but there was nothing they could do.
