    great review!
    I would like to share my setup that helps me carry two full frame cameras + two heavy pro lenses + two pro flashes. It consists of the following:
    1) ThinkTank Pixel Racing Harness V2.0 => $42
    2) Think Tank Pro Speed Belt V2.0 => $42
    3) Two SpiderHolster => $100 each
    Total cost is $284 and it's so easy to wear (a little difficult to re-adjust the belt if you need to). It works like magic and i get through a full 8hr wedding with no back or shoulder pain. No need to twist the camera to get it loose, but it's extremely difficult to do so by accident. I could even sit down on a narrow chair without taking the cameras off my waist!
    One thing worth mentioning, installing the SpiderHolster on the ThinkTank belt can be a difficult task, but you only need to do it once.

    I just got the Peak Design Leash. This video mentions the "seat belt" attribute but doesn't mention one of the main advantages is that this material lets you bring up the camera easily because the slick surface of the strap slides easily on your shirt. Works great for me. I like the Leash for my mirrorless camera because it works well with the weight of the camera and lens but doesn't scream "I've got a camera strapped to my body". Also I'm using the D-ring that screws into the tripod mount and it lets the camera rest on your side with the lens down. I like that. I don't use a tripod that much so I'm not concerned with it using the tripod mount.

    The black rapid strap bumping against your leg isn't a problem. You just have to adjust the strap so it is shorter. The length you put it on was much to large. I have the Black Rapid Sport and am a big fan of it. Not being able to use the tripod mount is indeed a problem.

      You can get plates that allow you to still connect the BR, or use the RRS' B2FABN to connect it directly to their plates. I actually modified my older BR strap (doesn't work on newer ones) and put on a QD connector that goes directly into my RRS plate.

      Leander Knol the manfrotto RC2 plates work with the Black rapid straps. You need the tripod plate and a replacement screw from black rapid which allows you to connect the strap to the d ring on the plate.

    I've owned the original Cotton Carrier vest for a few years and love it. I just upgraded to the new model with side holster that allows for carrying both bins and an SLR (and has a built-in umbrella sleeve, ideal for the very wet winter weather we get here on the Left Coast of Canada). I really don't know what Tony & Chelsea are talking about saying how hard it is to "assemble", etc. It comes assembled .. you only need to attach the side holster if using one. Yes, you could probably use a second pair of hands when first fitting the straps/buckles to your size, but after that you just slip it over your head, snap one side buckle and go. Absolutely ideal for bird and wildlife photographers in my opinion .. just got my first photos of a wild bobcat in 64.8 years, so it gets the job done :>))

      I use the Cotton 3G system. Aside from initial adjustments and ongoing tweaks, there is nothing to assemble. For treks, urban wandering, events, so on this beats any strap I have ever had--including my favorite Op/Tech systems. After 60 years with all size cameras, I know. And no, unless one is drunk or something no assistance is required to put it on. The vlog maker here must have been having a bad day. Perhaps the expresso machine was not working...

    I have a strap very similar to the Black Rapid, I think it's called a quick strap, I only paid like $20 dollars for it in Thailand, and I love it, I haven't found anything better, it even has a little zip pocket for memory cards, i usually walk with my hand on the camera, but I also keep the strap smaller with the camera higher up next to my hip, so the camera doesn't swing around as much, and it's easier to use, it is also good when you want to walk past some people without them noticing your camera, you can just swing it a little behind you for a minute, I also have a hand grip style like you showed in the video, not sure the brand, but mine doesn't need a tool to put it on or off, it just has a thing that you hand tighten that works just fine

    • @jerclarkedotorg
      @jerclarkedotorg 10 років тому

      +1 I have a similar one and agree about just adjusting it better to not bang hip.
      Main issue I have is how restricting it is when using live view. It was fine for my old Rebel which I always used via OVF, but once I got a Fuji I realized how much I wanted to use the LCD and reach out with my arms, but was constricted by the strap unless I made it super lose.
      Now I mostly use a small shoulder bag and no strap (quick to take it in/out and the camera is protected when I'm not holding it). Alternately my main camera bag is a messenger-style thing, so if I'm wearing that I just put the camera in there and it's still pretty handy.

    I use a strap somewhat similar to the black rapid, from CarrySpeed. It comes with a plate you attach to the tripod hole, and then your tripod has a sliding head that fits the plate. Ontop of that the plate moves the weight point out, so it basically hangs loose without bumping into your hips.

    I use two of the systems you displayed. The Black Rapid and the Cotton carrier. I am using the rapid more often than not, but if I know I am going to be do some real hiking the Cotton carrier is tough to beat. The front belly strap is long enough to wrap over the bigger lens and secure it more. Just don't expect to be able to just shoot quickly, but the camera and lens are truly safe. I just started to use Black Rapid this past racing season and find it to fit the bill over any of the multitudes of cheaper ones I have purchased, used and than gave away from doubles to many flexible types. Great video and looking forward to others.

    I just got the Peak Design camera strap at my local camera shop. I love this strap. Easy on, easy release, the bottom plate works with my tripod, so no fiddling with wrenches out in the field. Why didn't someone think of this a long time ago. Well engineered, well though out product. BIG thumbs up or this product.

  • @normanmiller
    @normanmiller 9 років тому

    I've been using a Black Rapide for some time now. I also have a Manfrotto tripod, their 'quick release' plate has a screw with a huge metal loop. I attach the carabiner to that loop, not the screw attachment that Black Rapide supply. Not only is the Manfrotto plate more firmly attached but I can easily remove the carabiner to connect the camera plus plate to the tripod.
    As regards the camera banging against the thigh. I tend to walk with my hand on the camera anyway as I don't want it to hit something like a wall. I have also seen the strap shortened, still worn across the body, so it is held closer to and further up the body.

    I'm a fan of the OP/Tech Deluxe strap with their Sling Strap Adapter kit. This converts the neck strap to a sling strap. You then have something that's the same general idea as the Black Rapid strap, except that it doesn't attach to the tripod socket so it's much easier to use a tripod with this strap. Mine attaches to my RRS L-b racket and one of the two strap attachment points on the camera body. Because I'm paranoid, I also use their Secure-Its velcro thingies to ensure that none of the quick disconnect points ever disconnects accidentally. My only complaint about this setup is that the sling mechanism doesn't slide along the adapter strap all that freely, so I find that the strap kind of goes along for the ride when I lift the camera to my eye and the strap then sometimes feels like it's in the way.

    For my GH3, I use both the Peak Design Leash and Cuff straps which are fantastic! I like the easy of installation, minimal look, smooth seat belt like fabric, and versatility to go between the two straps easily. Lastly, I like that they are slim enough to throw in my bag or pocket without excess bulk. For example, the Cuff can be used as a bracelet for when you don't need it and it is quite comfortable and the Leash easily fits into a back pocket when not needed.

    Been a great fan of the Peak Design kit since the Capture One clip. The Slide is the most comfortable strap I've ever used and the Capture clip is also extremely useful. It's handy that the Capture plates are Arca Swiss compatible so the plate stays on my cameras all the time. Goes from clip to tripod. They even have a narrow plate for small mirrorless bodies.

  • @burning1rr
    @burning1rr 6 років тому +2

    My favorite strap is the Magpul MS4. It's an excellent convertible single/two point rifle sling that uses a standard rifle Quick Disconnect fittings. Really Right Stuff is adding QD fittings to their Arca plates and battery grips, as well as clamps that add a QD fitting to your existing arca compatible plate. QD is secure, but easy to remove, and this solution avoids having numbs in the middle of your hand with an L grip.
    Because the sling can convert to two points, there's an option of attaching it to both the camera body and the foot of a telephoto lens. That can avoid the problem of the lens swinging around while hanging from a strap.

    Before my camera was even delivered, I ordered a Focus-1 rapid shoulder strap similar to the Black Rapid. I knew that I wasn't going to use the Canon strap and thought a sling-type shoulder strap with easy access to my camera would be the right fit for me. I can see how the attachment system to the tripod mount can be cumbersome to many, but when I wore it today, it really felt nice. A plus to the con mentioned about the tripod attachment is that no tools are required.

    Spider Holster is the best imho hands down for weddings and long days with the camera. It takes all the weight off your shoulders, is intuitive, secure, really well designed with the allen key and a tripod mount integrated into the mount, and just makes you feel badass when you un-holster and holster your camera.

    The black Rapid strap has a couple issues you find out after a while only:
    _ the shoulder part doesn't stay on your shoulder if you're using your camera too quickly, when you're in a hurry (in a wedding for example). I have to reajust it all the time.
    _ the metal attachment doesn't slide well after a while I assume because of the invisible dirt and humidity.
    For a wedding, the black rapid with the attachment that goes under your shoulder is preferable.

    Good video. I have one similar to the cross chest BlackRapid strap. 2 comments: 1) You should shorten it so it does not hit your leg as you walk, it works well for me at the waist line. 2) Using the tripod screw hole is a pain... I don't understand how they haven't thought of that... How hard would it be to create a dual system to accommodate both uses? :-/

    How about hand holding zoom lens like Nikon's 200-500mm, I often see people letting go of the lens to use two hands to adjust camera settings, what's the risk in damaging the camera mount? Is it the weight or the length of the lens? Is there any risk when you're only holding the camera with the lens vertically? 2:24

    I purchased the Black Rapid strap a few months ago. I loved it until yesterday. As Chelsea pointed out, the attachment piece came loose and my camera fell on a hardwood floor. Good thing I had a lens hood on my STM lens because it broke my camera's fall and was destroyed in the process. I see myself buying another camera strap in the near future. I don't want to go through that again.

    i had one of those black rapid straps. the nut that holds the carabiner shut - kept unscrewing and one day i went to let go of the camera and let it hang by my side and the perfect storm happened. the nut was loose and it twisted just right and unhooked its self from the grommet and i dropped my new camera on the sidewalk. new canon T4i with a 28-300 zoom. it landed nose first on the lens and the filter just exploded. it cost me 75 bucks to have the bent filter ring removed and to have the lens checked out to see if it was damaged and fortunately it wasnt. i also had one of those black rapid dual camera straps and it used the same type of attachments. the cameras swing freely so you are always smacking your camera into something - then if you get down on one knee the second cameras lense is in the dirt.
    i usually use the dual cotton carrier harness and this is the best dual harness i have found. this has a good locking system to keep the camera from popping out but at events i am just walking around so there really is no danger of the camera flipping out so i attach the hub 90 degrees out from the way its supposed to be so i just lift the camera straight up and down instead of turning it and lifting. the one problem with the system is the arca - swiss base plate. i have problems with it interfering with the battery hatch and dont want to carry a allen wrench to remove that plate every time i change batteries. i really dont care for adding the extra weight either so i figured out a way to get rid of that base plate and use the cotton carrier hub to attach directly to the arca - swiss base clamp. so i eliminated the extra weight and my battery hatch isnt blocked anymore.

      +erv schleufer I've used the Black Rapid for many years now and your right about the way it attaches. I've seen mine unscrew as well but have always been lucky enough to notice it before tragedy struck. I like the way the strap works but the need to think of a better way to attach the camera.

      I've used my Black Rapid for more than 5 years now, I've never had it even remotely come close to loose. Read the directions where it says to lightly wet the rubber seat on the nut tighten to finger tight, attached the carabiner and the give a quarter twist. Never has my screw been loose or unseated. Black Rapid is the best strap you can buy. Just wish they weren't so darn expensive.

    Great reviews, well done! The Peak Design's strap looks nice and strong, do you think it would manage a 1D body with 500 attached?
    Being disabled; a C5 quadriplegic, I use a combination of straps and supports. Thanks for reviewing the Cotton Carrier, I use it with the 'steady shot' option when shooting with heavy gear; 1DMk2N and heavy lenses. Without it I'd have to use; try to use, a tripod, but setting-up and using a tripod while using a wheelchair is near impossible. Yes CC and steady-shot are tough to adjust at first but then you're set and it is fantastic, and yeah it's ugly but if it works, vanity isn't going to win the argument, my crippledom does.
    I also use a combination of a regular neck and a hand strap when shooting hand-held, both provide for a bit of safety as it's easy to drop things with paralyzed fingers that provide zero grip. I primarily use Domke 'Gripper' straps and a 'CamAdapter' hand strap for bigger body/lens combos. My last strap purchase was a BR Sport, have used it a bit, it is okay but I'm still evaluating it.
    Great job folks, you're the best!

    Hi Tony,
    I have a few of the slides from Peak. I love all the Peak products, but they really need to make a slide which is narrower for cameras like the Fuji X system or Leica, etc.. The current strap which is great is just to wide for smaller cameras.

    I have both a Black Rapid and the Peak Design strap. PD is great if I just want to sling it over my shoulder but just doesn't work for me if I cross it over my body. One, it sits too high for me even at the lowest adjustment and I am only 5'8" and another reason why is that I usually have a camera bag on my back. In these cases the BR is awesome as I can place the strap under the back pack and am still able to bring the camera up to shoot. I use my tripod mount to hook it too and have never had an issue of it coming loose. As far as it bouncing off your leg...just raise it up so it sits more in the middle of your hip.

      @garybond4459 6 років тому +1

      You may want to review a video on the strap and adjustments, because I'm 6'4" and use it regularly across my body. It hangs right at my waist and is very easy to bring up for a shot. I'm not sure I'd want to have to carry both a camera on a strap and a camera bag...one or the other.

  • @JasonZais

    I've got a Blackrapid Yeti, the stability really depends on how long you have the strap, and it helps if you're using any of the add-on straps that go under-arm. The yeti allows you to attatch a secondary strap so you can carry two bodies at once, as it's only using one shoulder, you'll want the secondary one to be lighter, but it's nice for the few times a year I use two bodies.
    As far as tripod use, if you use the Manfrotto QR2 system, they have a screw for the plate that folds flat into the base allowing you to go onto a manfrotto head, and back onto the BR clip.
    I've had it for a year, and only once ever had the screw come loose, over 6 hours into an outdoor adventure when it was hovering around 0F the whole time, going in an out of ice caves, etc.

    Ive tried a multitude of different straps but found that they either bounced around on your side (eg sling style straps like black rapid), just plain uncomfortable (any neck strap IMO) or not secure enough. I do a lot of hiking and out doors stuff and didnt like having my camera moving around so much and usually ended up walking with it stabilized with my hand so I could move it as needed. Doing this I came to the conclusion that a simple wrist strap is all I need. I just make my own and have been the happiest with them. If I dont want to hold my camera I just put it in my shoulder bag and have easy access. When I do photography (quite a lot) I try to stay focused with it and enjoy having the camera in the hand and ready. Makes me stay honest anyways :).
    Just my own experience. I always thought I didnt like straps because I had the wrong one so I kept on looking. It took me a lot of time and money to figure out I HATE straps haha

    The Cotton Carrier is fricking awesome. I have used it a lot. It can hit you in the junk though if you don't wear it high and/or have a long lens and/or you're short. I'm just over 6 feet tall and the Canon 400 5.6 can sometimes bounce and hit me where it's not so pleasant (if I don't have the vest properly fitted and snug). The higher up you wear it, the better. But man does it make long hikes with your camera so much more enjoyable.

    I use a single point M-4 Rifle sling that attaches to a mount I screw into the tripod threads. Been using it for 7 years and still good to go. It has a quick release that allows me to remove the camera without taking the sling from my body. These things are made to carry safely just about anything you might want to stick onto your camera and still not stress it out.

    I use my Black Rapid much shorter, where my camera is just above my waist, and then I can use my arm to gently press the camera against my body so it doesn't bounce all over. I also use the 'Brad Strap' which keeps it from going for my neck when I'm using it with a really big lens.

    I bought the Blackrapid strap and was continually worried it would unscrew from the tripod connection. I kept tightening it to be sure it wouldn't fall off. After a few weeks I was taking shots of dragonflies around a large dam. Just after I finished, my camera Canon 5D MK111dropped to the ground. Fortunately I had taken my heavy Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens off or the impact of hitting the ground could have damaged both lens and camera, especially at the join. Having to take my tripod plate off was also a nuisance. I searched for an alternative and found the OP/TECH USA strap, Connects at the 2 designated strap points, can be unclipped at both points, very comfortable.

    I already own a Black Rapid (it came with one of my camera bodies) but, since i switch between tripod & handheld a lot, the tripod socket mounting method just doesn't work for fast changes. It's not impossible and can be done without tools - an absolute requirement - but gets in the way of a shoot's momentum. I think I'm going to give the Peak Design Slide a try. Thanks for the review.

    I don’t yet own my favorite strap. Most often I use a PD Leash on my Sony A1+system. It’s easy to adjust and discrete on the street but after a while it starts to carve in to my shoulder. I’m thinking to wrap some type of padded-leather/soft “thing” over it where it meets the shoulders. The PD slide is just too much material to tuck away when you sit down at a small café.🌞🇸🇪

    My Preference is the Op Tech USA Utility Strap Sling used with my Sony RX10m4. Goes over left shoulder camera sit about waste level on right . Slides up strap to take photo Magic. I have an extra strap for security attached to my trouser belt loop. All are sturdy but quick release by squeezing with finger and thumb. Very comfortable to wear not like the basic Sony strap which slides and causes friction if round neck. By the way your various video presentations are just great. Thank you.

    Great video. I could not be happier with my Peak Design slide and slide lite. I started with the light one when I was using kit lenses and its perfect for my point and shoot too. When I got my 18-35 and 70-200 I got the regular one becaus it’s more comfortable with a bigger setup. So well constructed, comfortable and you can choose how you want to wear it. Pricy but so SO worth it. Think about what you’re going to be out if your gear hits the ground.😧

    Great vid! I use the Peak design slide with the peak design clutch and very satisfied with both of them. The build quality is wonderful, I have had them both for 3 years or so only replaced the "connectors" on the slide once so far since they are the only part of the product that will be getting worn and needed to be replaced. The clutch is a nice one as well giving you a bit extra support if u got a big camera or heavy lens and want to shoot handheld.
    I gotta get your books, I have learned so much from your channel over the past 2 months since I found my way here, big thanks to the whole crew and extra big one to you Tony!

    Just bought a Black Rapid Curve. It works well. It didn't break the bank. Once it's on and adjusted it stay that way. It is my first shoulder strap and I use it for a Canon 7D Matk ii which can get heavy when you use the battery grip and a 300 mm zoom lens. So far I like it and it helps carry the gear well.

    I have the Black Rapid and love it. I use a accessory screw for the manfrotto tripos which allow the camera to be attached to the black rapid with the tripod mount on - really cool when going in the wild - just setup the tripod - unhook
    the black rapid and set it on the tripod - voila ready to shoot.

    Been using the Black Rapid Sport sling for the past month for shooting sports, really comfortable, and while I don't let the camera hang on by itself, it does take some of the weight of the camera when holding it low with one hand.

    Have you had any experience with using a sling-style camera strap to carry a camera with an external flash attached? The weight of the external flash might cause the camera to hang awkwardly, as it does when I use a standard around-the-neck strap.

    I use a combination of a Black Rapid style strap(a generic version I found on Amazon), and a Body Glove brand version of the Hand Strap I have attached to a Acra QR style bottom bracket, and I have a safety tether attaching the strap to one of the strap lugs on the camera body. This is on a Pentax K-1 with battery grip. I've used it with my D FA 150-450 with out any problems. I just clip the strap to the lens instead of the body.

    Haha Tony straight in there "If you got a bigger camera you need a bigger strap"
    Also I use the Joby pro sling strap and absolutely love it. I find the locking mechanism really useful as I'd hate to have my camera just free-dangling around my body. It comes with a safety carabiner as well, so if you haven't screwed the strap into the base of the camera properly and it falls off, it won't hit the floor.
    Way better than any other strap I've seen (except maybe the crazy ones for like 3 cameras!)

    Hi Tony and Chelsea, I am still rocking my OEM Canon strap on my 5D Mark III. I do a lot of running photography (I run with a running crew and have to pace around 7 minute miles and faster to keep up with them). I always use my strap over one shoulder and end up holding my camera in the air with my either hand to prevent it from bumping at my side. I know this is a unique need, but am I doomed to holding my camera when I run or is there a strap or lightweight bag out there that would keep it off my hip, but still make it easy to access very quickly? These runs can last around an hour and can be anywhere from 5-10 miles. I've tried using a LowePro sling and trying to pop the camera in and out of the bag, but it's a lot of work to safely get it in and out of my bag in a hurry. Thanks! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I like my Op/tech Pro Loop strap with extensions so the camera is close to my hand like the black rapid. One thing that was problematic with this set up was that the strap slipped off my shoulder when I was shooting so I put a clip on the straps to hold them together. Now no slips. I could show a picture but have no way to upload it here.

    Black Rapids Black Metro Sling gets my vote with my new Sony A6000. This is a real sweet combo, I have a 20 plus year old Black American Tourister bag that came in a set. This small shoulder bag has a 13 x 10 x 7 interior compartment with a mesh zippered pouch inside. Outside is a big zipper pouch across the front 10 x 5 x 1 1/2 deep. I can unzip my bag and have my camera out between the rain and drop it back in and zip it back up. An old plastic shower cap and no more rain issues and totally incognito. Almost like making exposures with my Minox B subminiature camera.

    I just got a peak slide and I love it! Was looking at the black rapid, but as you said, lacked personality - wasn't as pretty as the peak in "ash" and I didn't like that I'd have to remove the whole thing to use a tripod where I can easily use the capture mount with my tripod. Love your sense of humor too (all of you) :)

    i had watched this video and it was very helpful after searching long and hard I chose a dual quick rapid system from Accessory genie on Amazon $36 CDN the camera screw mounts are dual ended so I could attach a mount plate to the bottom of them. it was tight so I added a flash spigot to extend it and allow the caribiner to move freely all for less than $50 CDN.. excellent system very well made with stretchy straps for comfort.

    Great video! I am buying a Kirk L bracket for my Nikon D810 but I also want to buy a strap that allows me to leave the L Bracket on the camera. Is the Peak Design the only strap that would work, or does the Kirk bracket have an extra threaded connect to allow me to use a Black Rapid?

    I used a BlackRapid strap for a while, but I didn't like carrying my heavy camera upside down, then not long ago ago a friend of mine got in touch with Nikon regarding straps attached to the tripod screw but apparently they recommended NOT using the tripod screw mount for anything other than a tripod. Since then I put my BR in a draw and never used it again. .

    Did you guys know the Miggo strap? It works like a black rapid, but is much nicer and, if you are using a small lens, you can just roll the camera and its secure. The quick release screw for the black rapid solves the issue with using a tripod. If the screw is tightened properly it will not come loose. Use the leverage provided by the fastener to tighten it up and that prevents over tightening from occurring. Good review guys, just needed a bit more research in this case.

    Love your book and your videos. They are very helpful for a perpetually amateur photographer like me. I want to put in my two cents on the Cotton Carrier system. First, I agree with your fashion rating - my daughter is embarrassed to be with me when I'm wearing it :-). BUT, I just love the functionality. True, it was a challenge to set it up originally, but once that's done it's incredibly easy to put on and use. With a little practice, the camera on/off is smooth as silk. I like that the arca swiss tripod mount is integrated with the camera mount - all of it stays on my camera body all the time. I've found that when I'm out hiking and shooting photos, the safety strap in combination with the hand strap is perfect! I can hold the camera in my hand at my hip, even with a relatively large lens, and the safety strap takes enough of the weight that I don't get tired. Overall, i think it's a great system, and I wouldn't trade it for any other.

    Disappointing there aren't more options out there. I shoot wildlife and carry and med/large lens AND binoculars all the time. Currently using something similar to black rapid. I like the way the black rapid slides but I tend to hold the lens when walking around to avoid it slapping against me. When I do that and take some of the weight off, the shoulder strap slides off my shoulder. I need something that has an additional strap under the opposite arm to prevent that. It still doesn't solve the binocular issue. I'm just carrying that around my neck with a regular strap. Anything else out there?

    I've wondered if a sam brown type crossover belt mightened be the best way to go. It would be relatively east to attach a D ring and loop to the cross belt, and the waist belt would keep it (the camera) above the hinge point of the hip.
