"Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight?"
"The same thing we do every night, Pinky - steal some leather handles!"
The Pinkie and the brain the pinkie and the brain
Ahahahahaha
@@BottomGear2 one is a genius, the others insane
To the guy who ghosted the Osborne handle: Shame on you.
Reminds me of a Diresta situation that Jimmy mentioned on the podcast a while back.
Makes me think that the leather guy could be Jimmy 😂
Is there an update on this?
Somewhere, there is a guy with the handle sitting on their fireplace mantle.
He probably needed the part for his own Osborne and lied to get a hard to find part for free.
@@danielclement6199 That's one of the most plausible theories I've heard. I feel a little sick thinking about it.
6:40 In the Armatron, the gears look identical to each other, so the missing gear is probably the same as the others, just use one of the other gears out of the donor.
I remember when you promised this. You took your time, I never forget. I still bug my third grade teacher about that Halloween bingo prize.
Lasky Labs What halloween bingo prize?
Lasky Labs Yeah! What Halloween bingo prize? Don't think we've forgotten.
Bingo prize
The world must know
What is the mystery of the prize?!! Tell meEEEE!!
My first apartment wasn't as nice as that cat tower.
@J J My current house isn't as nice as that cat tower.
A new 8-Bit Guy upload always retro-brightens my day!
Nice : )
Joke: Retro-brite yourself
Regards to the broken gear: maybe try to use a gear off another shaft if it’s the same gear ratio?
or just use a gear from any other device like tape deck or cdrom drive lol??? xD idk what to think about this...
3dprint?
All he'd have to do is use one of the remaining ones to make a mold to cast a new one...
@@cs512tr Did you even watch that part of the video? He clearly said it's impossible to have a gear that strong and that small 3d printed.
Incorrect. If you use a prusa i3 with a high temp material like abs or petg, it will work perfectly
RIP Noid. 2001-2016. And also RIP my cat Toni 1994-2016
22 years old, are you sure it was living in the last year's? That's ancient.
@Nathan Squire yes I'm sure. I've witnessed her birth and her death.
If Lola was born in 2010, she'll still be fit right now.
Both are some serious years.
Your cute cat giving you love blinks! 2:46
Andrew Awwwwww!
Noid lived longer than Windows XP
RIP Noid 2001-2016
RIP Windows XP 2001-2014
Both shall be missed. :(
He is the same age as I am.
RIP fellow 2001er
im still using xp tho, noid never died, hes just chilling in cat heaven for a bit
F
Press F to pay respects.
Since Noid lived from 2001 to 2016, according to my calculations she lived for around 81 cat years.
Scythal 15 real years
kristal kerrick those are in human years
kristal kerrick said “real” years
He should have Retrobrighted her.
Regards that broken gear - make a silicone mold using the gear (with missing tooth temporarily filled in with putty - so you can cut the tooth out later with a file). Cut the mold open, fill it with a liquid plastic. Wait for it to set, remove the gear, use files to smooth off any burrs and the tooth that was missing.
Instead of using putty to make the missing tooth, he could just use molding putty, form it around the gear then pull it out before it fully sets and rotate the gear so that a fully intact tooth presses into the mold where the missing tooth was.
Or just use on of the other two undamaged gears :D
He could use a gear front the second unit he bought
Would using a piece of clear acrylic plastic be strong enough? The kind used for plastic windows at menards? Dremel'd and hand cut of course. Its expensive stuff though.
the gears look the same, i think he could just take one from one of the robots and put it in the other one
Who keeps a leather handle, honestly
I think someone really fucked up trying to repair it and is now afraid to admit it.
The same kind of person who throws a shoe.
Useless Duck Company
But you need the handle to even carry the Osborne One you know.
Name and shame
Wow ikr
That Osborne part faux leather thief, grrr! Damn, it’s infuriating!
Edit: I fixed the name Osborne because I'm a lazy ass and didn't check the spelling.
Hey man Osbourne leather is good, lol
Dukefazon Maybe he died, lost his email, spam filters took the mail etc. No way to know for sure.
mube who know and what on erath who want steal broken leather
why post it you know david can buy that leather
Some people are just retarded!
10:59 It's clear that the 8-bit Guy loves cats. Nice cat mousepad, David. 😆
Yeah it wasn't at all clear by the fact he had 3 cats.
Can we have a 24 hour live stream on the cat tower? ☺
Jack Beale SAMEE
Yes! ThisOldTony streams his bathroom faucet too!
And updates on re-dos.
Just go around the neighborhood and capture a feral cat a keep it as a pet.

Scammed of a friggin vintage computer handle. Daaaamn.
i really wonder if its just a jerk that "stole" the handle or if something else happend :D
Axonteer FBI open up happened
I got my Xbox 360 controller in my dorm stolen before. Which was so weird because by the time I got it it's already dirt cheap, and there are quite some more expensive things on my desk untouched, say my drawing tablet, which might look like a piece of useless plastic but is quite a bit more expensive than my controller.
(Ended up buying a Xbox One controller later and is still using that one after 3 years though... )
Maybe the guy died. In that case... RIP. :-(
NAME & SHAME!
RE: Armatron - the original gears were I believe injection molded. I'd try
A) getting anperson with a lasercutter to cut you a pair of 1/8" gears out of plexi then use cyanoacrelate glue to laminate them into the 1/4" thick gear to put on there..
B) find 8 tooth nylon gears from an RC hobby shop
This is a weird format for a UA-cam comment.
I'm impressed that the cats actually scratched the post on the cat tower. I've had cats my whole life and the common scenario is pristine scratching posts and scratched up couches and chairs.
that was my last cat lol. he never liked scratching posts and usually just ignored them, though he would scratch up a big oval rug. Thankfully it was the cheapest rug.
our current cat likes the most expensive rug, but it's also over 20 years old at this point so wdgaf. He also loves scratching posts. though the most annoying thing is he keeps scratching up a loveseat.
7:15 I have a solution for that: Take a cast of one of the gears that you do have and instead of casting it in plastic, cast it in high shore silicone.
It's possible that it will be rigid enough that it can turn the mating gear, and yet flexible enough that it will *_allow_* the gear to jump when grip pressure is too high, without it becoming permanently damaged.
Considering that the grip strength of the jaws shouldn't require anything major, this might be a route worth consideration.
Think of it as an engineered point of failure, that never actually fails.
About the cat tower - I don't have cats myself, but I'm wondering if they would use the top room more if you put a hole in the top and bottom of the room somewhere, so they can climb up or down from the feeling area or from the top without having to climb from the side. I saw one tower that was basically a bunch of rooms that were all connected by holes on the inside and the cats seemed to like climbing between them.
Interestingly enough, these holes were in the original design, but he removed them.
3:34 The world's quietest drill.
The sound was edited out
JF Tech/Drones Nah, definitely the world's quietest drill.
JF Tech/Drones r/woooosh
You forgot to hide treats in there. That's breaking cat rule #1. You also broke cat rule #2 but not providing the boxes everything came in, for them to play in while ignoring your handy work.
I wondered if the cats didn't like the new carpet smell. Soaking in hot soapy water and rinsing might have helped.
With regards to the Osbourne handle, my best guess is that the 'theif' secretly hates you, which is a shame, because you are so good at what you do, and thus withheld the handle, or, more likely, he couldn't fix it and just feels massively guilty. I know this feeling and it can have a 'lockdown' effect where you just pretend that you don't know anything and stop communicating.
Jonathan Cook I’ve felt that way too many times in my life.
@Inu Yasha Did you SEE that leather handle after he retrobrited it? It's not much of a gift. All it does is make it harder for the 8BG to finish restoring it.
That bogus leathermaker needs to be exposed to teach him a lesson.
I hope the guy who got that Osbourne leather handle is OK IRL. That is, he's not sick or unhealthy or anything. People don't usually go missing from emails that easily.
Edit: I nearly thought that 8-bit Guy's brother would be either 4-bit guy or 16-bit guy xD
So if 8 bit guy is a Byte, he should have a 4 bit little bro called Nibble.
@@borisdorofeev5602 He has an older brother, so would he be called a Kilobyte? (his older brother's channel is called TheGeekPub btw)
Holy crap, you actually finally got back to those projects you said you would.
In all likelihood, the cats are inhaling remnants of the glue used to keep the carpets down. When the odors from the glue dissipate more and they have the chance to get curious enough to approach it themselves and get used to the new differences.
PS: REALLY REALLY like this video. You should do more. It doesn't even have to really include footage of repairs etc, since that way you can spend less time editing and filming and just punch out a video like this every 6 months or so.
The more work you put into something for a cat, the less they appreciate it. That is how my tortie is wired.
lol. I built a cat tree for my friend and it took another cat that she was watching for a week to show him how to use it! He loves it now.
Yup. :-) That's a cat for ya.
No, it's just your sense of entitlement. In reality cat doesn't know how much or how little effort you spent, you just expect more out of larger effort.
But this is not a good logic to apply to pets, or family members, or children. They are not there for the purpose of your self-validation.
Siana Gearz And the world isn't here for YOUR self-validation either, you whiney SJW snowflake. My God, people were having a good discussion and then an SJW like you (probably a skinny jeans wearing Millennial) shows up as always and ruins it. I'm guessing by your icon that you're some kind of furry or "other-kin" too. Go back to Tumblr.
Siana -- Once upon a time, we told these intentionally hyperbolic fibs known as "jokes." In the days of yore, we traditionally laughed at the absurdity of these stories because we were once intelligent enough to know that they weren't based in real life. The end.
The dual SID project was something I would've liked to see an update to.
I would've also liked to see an update on the USB floppy emulator.
MESSIAH cartridge died for High voltage fault in his Commodore 64
Absolutely love your channel ! It brings back so many memories from being a teen in the 80's. Started with Timex Sinclair here, then moved on to the Commodores (vic20, 64,128), then Apples (IIe and IIc, etc. We have come a long way but is still great to see some of those retro machines running.
We got an Armature as a hand-me-down gift as kids and that thing was awesome! We never had the accessories that came with it, but was a ton of fun to pick up X-Mem and GI Joe action figures.
The same thing happened to ours eventually, too. It started struggling to open and eventually wouldn’t open at all. Now I kind of want to get one just to have around.
"So I found a good use for all of my old vintage laptops."
I feel the same way about my Nintendo DS collection, the shape, size and indestructibility of those things makes them useful for everything
i don' think the leather guy is a scammer, if he was he wouldn't have confirmed that he'd received the thing, i think he was just some teenager just learning how to work with leather who bit more than he could chew, and decided to just ignore it an pretend it never happened when he messed it up.
Oh you're wrong my friend, I was scammed last year on a MacBook Pro and the scammer (even tho I already knew everything by that point) faked his behavior until the laptop arrived, he did in fact notify me.
But why scam David out of a worthless damaged handle? It probably was exactly this, someone who wanted to help, or thought they wanted to, but ended up forgetting about it or ignoring it.
Maybe they were missing that part for their own computer.
I am sure it was sent with tracking information,.
Scamming someone over a valuable modern laptop makes sense. Scamming somebody over a handle of a vintage computer that is in need of repair makes absolutely no sense.
Love your videos. Thanks for keeping them coming with the same enthusiasm each week. Looking forward to the next one! Also hope you do hear back about the leather handle.
you addressed so many classic videos. this is actually a huge favorite video of mine so far.
The cats probably didn't like the smell of the glue
wolverine96 that's impossible if they were okay with it before.
I guess I should have specified better. Not just the glue, but the fresh glue.
R. I. P Noid!
I love the phrase "customer testing" for the cat tower
Used to watch you back a couple years, decided to come back and it's great to see you're still going strong. Keep up the great work!
I suggest making the cat rocket tower symmetrical so if the rope gets too much use on one corner you can just rotate the whole thing.
The cat tower is symmetrical. But I don't think you would have time in your day to rotate it.
Not every day... when it is worn down
The doors on each floor are not in the same place on every side, so.... not symmetrical.
My suggestion would be to put 4 layers of rope on the outer most corner so that the worn down speed is more on par with the other corners.
the cats dont like the small box, better to open it like the lower box is
They are quite big cats. Have they grown a lot since you built the cat tower?
Cats really love Boxes when they are on the ground. But high up they need more space to stretch and move around for jumping. Fewer, but taller levels, might help.
Sorry - I'm a cat nerd.
Thanks for the updates. I'd wondered about the Armatron. Also, I really like the music in your videos, especially recently.
The video you made on your Chevy Volt was the video that made me decide to get an electric vehicle, and I just bought my new 2018 Volt. It was very informative, thanks!
That leather thief needs to be punished :(
AShifter Something could of happened in his family, he could of died.. Anything could of happened. He's innocent untill proven guilty.
Yeah, somebody should handle the handle thief!
Leather whip or belt maybe? I’d enjoy giving that punishment
That piece has turned into a black-market collectible. :D
*Off-topic ponder:* The phrase _could of_ has puzzled me for some time now. I can say with very little hyperbole, that not a day goes by I don't come across someone writing it like that instead of _could have_ or _could've._ Is it just an extremely common mistake, or is there something more to it (like a regional thing maybe, like with David pronouncing _solder_ as _sodder?_ )
i first encountered of-instead-of-'ve in schoolwork, as the wrong answer you were meant to not check, and it baffled me, because in all my years of grading other students' papers, I'd never seen anyone make that mistake
then I got on the internet and it was EVERYWHERE
Thank you 8-Project Guy
Sir, I've respected yourself for many a years now, based solely on your technical prowess... But far far more so now, for the time you dedicated to The Noid my man! I knew at first glance you was a commendable human being, good show boss!👍
Would love more of these updates. Love the fact I knew every single project you mentioned.
Please enlarge the cat door you cut to 2x the size or just remove the divider altogether...
Same thoughts here. I wondered if the one cat likes the lower room because it's bigger but they don't like the upper rooms because they're cramped and he's also made those doorways really tiny.
Increase the height , remove the divider, and cut a hole in the 'roof' and floor, guaranteed cat enjoyment. My cats also really like a very short pile carpet, makes getting claws stuck much less frequent.
Didn't you know that cats are actually liquid? A small hole is fine. They probably just don't care for the placement.
I think they just don't want to go there because there's no convenient entry. If they could enter through the floor, it would be a different matter.
cats have bodies that can pass through really small holes. if their head fits through, their whole body probably can as well.
adventureoflinkmk2 oh, i see what you did there.
5:10 Best use of Apple hardware I've ever seen.
bahahahaha!
Exactly!

10-15 years ago that would have been a few thousand dollars worth of paperweights
Poor people. LOL!
Man you are probably my favorite channel on all of youtube. Thanks David!
Another fun quality video. It's always fun to see updates on the various projects.
You have a brother who also makes UA-cam videos? Must run in the family. :-) Gonna go check that one out right now.
I am just so happy u made this
This is the most common gear that breaks. I just 3-d printed a few last night. I'll follow-up soon once I install it. I have 3 Armatrons! With 3-d Printing tech now in 2023, the gear can easily be printed in a decent plastic. Love your vids!
I could watch a whole feature movie of 8-Bit Guy either building, repairing or restoring stuff. Great video as always! Kitty Rocket Tower V. 2.0 turned out great!
Love the update!!
Rip leather handle, at least Techmoan's Osburn is now fully restored
Love your station. Subscribed. This is great intro music. Often skip people's intro but yours is great!
I had an Armatron back when I was a kid in the 80s. I used to do a lot of things with it. I also used to pick up my Hotwheels and Matchbox cars pretending it was a junkyard crane. I don't remember if got that gear problem from using it. It was a pretty neat toy back then.
TFW you are sent 50 handles
Never trust random deals on email, it could be a leather thief.
I had that Arnatron as a kid. As i recall the gears jumped in mine too. But wow, what memories... i had the box too. My dad got it for me for Christmas I think, but i remember clearly him explaining the robotic arm too me.
I loved watching the building of this. it was a great video. and it's so nice watching an update with more of it.
another great video. always enjoy your posts
David make sure the gas in your cars isn’t going bad after sitting too long
@Joe Casson Good design. Although (being the anal sort that I am) if it were mine, I'd still use fuel stabilizer. It's cheap insurance. 👍
There's no way there will be something wrong with the petrol left in tank for few months... Decades sure... not to mention he's using this cars and it's not standing still.
Dave, you can get some round plastic rod from a hobby store and make your own gear for that armatron. simply cut teeth into it using some files. should do it and you'll have extra material if it breaks again.
also sorry to hear a subscriber ripped you off basically.
OpposingForces I think getting enough strength in those thin slivers of plastic between the teeth is going to be the biggest problem with almost any replacement.
yep nylon should do it, or make a file guide on 3d printer and then make from aluminium
Finally! We've been waiting for this video for almost two years now. It was well worth the wait.
My condolences on the loss of your kitty. They're all so adorable!
I'm still driving my 2013 Volt and I love that car. The fuel savings compared to the van I used to drive all the time pretty much makes the car payment (I have a nearly identical van as a winterbeater to keep Michigan road salt off the Volt, so no fuel savings in the winter). I can't recommend the Volt highly enough. Unfortunately I've never seen any advertisements at all for it, so a lot of the public doesn't really know anything about them (at least around here). Down side is, I live in very rural place, so to drive to any city will result in burning at least some gas for the round trip if I can't plug in.
You said you have another one of those robot arms and the same gear was missing. I’m no expert but I have a hunch that any other gear would do the job, it seems they use the same little gear on that part of the arm.
Yes, but the gears are fixed to those little shafts. And the shafts are all different lengths. So I've thought about trying to pry one of them off and put in on the other shaft. Not sure if I can do it without breaking one, but I may try that eventually.
The 8-Bit Guy Please try goo gone or some other adhesive remover...
It would be worth the shot.
The 8-Bit Guy Maybe you can try reaching one of those guys that do precision machining. I've seen them do way smaller and more intricate stuff.
Pro tip: amateur or small shop guys are always more willing to take on odd projects.
If you could get the shaft out of the machine, then set the plastic gear end into a box of heated sand, similar to what optometrists use for adjusting plastic glass frames, it might expand the plastic enough to loosen it without burning it like a torch or flame would do.
Well, that's sad to hear about Noid. :/ But sixteen years is a very long time for any pet, really. I honestly loved how Noid's lower jaw seems to always curl upward. very kyuute.
PigBunny is also very cute; I love fluffy cats. :3
The divider in the rocket tower seems to be what they dislike the most; I'd just remove it entirely, but that's my thinking.
I too was wondering about the LED screen project; looking forward to part 3.
I'm also wondering about all the keyboard projects you've put on hold, especially the one where you were planning on making a custom EPROM for.
As far the Osbourne part is concerned...(sorry in advance) WHAT AN ASSHOLE.
The retrobrighting looks good even now; just looks like a bit of aging, nothing unusual.
The desk seems to be holding up well too, very nice to see.
Floof cats are best cats. Bad for allergies, but soooo much more worth it to hug and cuddle with assuming they let you.
@@mayravixx25 Agreed. 'Tis why I wanted to meet 'FLUFFEH!', GHPhenom's cat. lolz
I love the way you kept your rugs in place while they were glued. That was thematic
I had an Armatron as a kid. It was awesome and came with little doo-dads to move around and put on top of each other.
Aww, Noid passed away 2 years ago and we didn't know about it???
R.I.P. Noid 2001-2016 🐱
Speaking of, my dog passed away a month ago, still super sad about it, but your videos help me not think about her too much. 🙂
The death of a beloved pet takes ages to heal. I had a dog myself that died a couple years back, and not a week goes by without me missing him.
Thank you... ☺️
Chaos89P Ive gotten a cat that's about 6 years old. I keep dreading the day I wake up and he'll be dead. You really get emotionally connected to them like family.
I was the *same* way for a couple of years before my dog passed on. But even these were rare to have me dreading it.
I can attest to all of the statements from above. My dog passed in late December, Christmas time was her favorite time of the year. I still think about her every so often. I wish everyone here the best and my condolences.
KITTIES!!!! Love them!
8-BIT GUY! i must thank you, you helped me with setting up my home network! its basic, but i want to make sure you got this, THANK YOU AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
Really liked this episode! Fun to see
3:31 love the super-practical cutting template!
Take a gear off of the extra parts and put it on the missing part.
yeah this is baffling me. There must be some kind of further obstacle he hasn't described because it looks like it'd be easy as pie to tear the gear off one of the shafts from the donor unit, or remove one of those entire rods and just put in it the fixable one
@@Timmysteve I've thought about emailing him and asking why he didn't do that but I always forget
in a cs major & my favorite think to watch while in quarantine is these restorations
I'll bet the cats would LOVE an entry hole though the very top floor down into the upper room.
What about the video with 2 SID chips?
What happened to the dead c64 from the LCD display video? You got it to work again?
I think this is a great idea to revisit old projects, enjoyed it.
Thanks for the update to the cat tree. My wife and I both enjoyed watching that!
I bet if you cut a hole in the top levels roof they would slip right in and out of it more
Awww I am so sorry one of your cats died, it must have not been easy. :( Anyway keep being awesome!
Yeah, 2018 has not been a good year for pets. I’ve already lost two dogs, one to leukemia, the other is unknown, as he became a little aggressive any time we tried to find out.
If I will trade a life for Noid I would go for that Osbourne leather handle thief.
This is why this is my favorite channel, because of the content!
Damn, this channel really has it all.
Old computer stuff, and cats.
I don't need anything else out of life. Just those two things.
What software are you using for shipping labels on the Dymo? I was able to get the Paypal USPS labels to sorta work but I wasn't able to generate UPS labels direct from UPS' website. I have to boot into VMWARE and use their Worldship software. I can't print UPS through Paypal due to my business account.
Lon.TV most label printer use epl or zpl to print, and it's a relatively simple language. Since I use a dozen different carriers, I just wrote a small program that take a template, fill the values form the database, electronic balance and order, and directly print. That way, you only need to customize the epl file, and the web service query to tell them a package is ready. You need a bit of programming knowledge, but it's ten times better IMO than using each carrier software.
Endicia works great with the Dymo 4xl
We use Dymos at work and the programs work fine, it’s the printers themselves that have constant problems, getting labels jammed or something else half the time. We also use Zebra printers and they work much better (but different size)
you could replace the whole gear's axle using one of the axles from the other Armatron moving the grey gear on the low end if necessary
and maybe make some subtle modifications to account for the design flaw (?) or just use the claw very carefully
Simone Daishi I really don’t understand why he didn’t do this.
I'm sorry to hear about Noid. For the top of the cat tree I would recommend removing the divider completely, giving them an access to through the top of the little room, and replacing the door style panel with your wide open wall idea. But I would add one thing: a lip. The lip should be just high enough to give the cats enough hiding space so that they feel their not so visible.
YOU HAVE A BROTHER!!! Seriously, I never saw you mention him before. I will be checking out his channel. Cheers!
I got something like this for my cat that had carpet on the outside of the walls. She never used the rope scratch posts, and instead always scratched the carpet instead. Now the house is completely shreded.
I can CT scan one of those gears for you so they can be reverse engineered! Youll get a nice STL file of the exact part. We have machines that have resolution down to 5 microns (.005mm). Let me know if you're interested in that. Ill do it for free!
You're not going to trick him again THAT easy, Handle Thief!
The handle thief was trying to strike again
I really envy all of your various skills and abilities to build and repair things. I've been shopping around for a new cat tower for my cat and they are not cheap. For something comparable to what you built I'm looking at spending about $300.
Been looking forward to this!
with the minimal gas you use, is there a concern for the gas going bad? so like if you put in 5 gallons and you go 3 years without running down the tank, would you deal with the same issue folks have when their internal combustion engine cars sit for extended time?
Yes. Same issue. Should put fuel stab in it.
Let’s vote he makes the gear! I vote YAY
@Eli Suryana Well, he's wrong.
I think yours is the coolest intro music ever. I have never heard a better one. :D
Thanks for the update on the cat tower!
