Do you need a dmx controller to learn capture as im just a beginner and wanting to learn the basics ?

No, you won't need one. You can use Capture's control pane and Universes Fixtures Mode to create a scene with your fixtures. Plus, you can connect Capture with your preferred console PC version, which most often comes free of charge.
