There are various steps to cleaning your teeth.
The dentist will first identify areas of tartar and plaque on the teeth. Tartar or calculus is a hardened plaque that can only be removed with the use of dental instruments. Plaque is a soft film that covers your teeth and may be removed with proper brushing.

The next step in the dental cleaning is to use scalers, which are hand-held devices. The hygienists will clean all of your teeth’s surfaces, including the microscopic gaps between teeth and along the gum line, where plaque and tartar build and bacteria that cause gum disease congregate.
