My mom was stationed out of Yongsan in the 80s! She'll watch your videos with me sometimes and likes to point out what's the same and what's changed since she left.
As a side note, she almost married her Korean boyfriend at the time, but they decided it would be too difficult as an interracial couple and especially hard on any kids they had. She is SO happy that you and Kurt are able to be together ❤

Wow. This was where most Army personnel were brought into SK. I remember being there, and that there was one really nice hotel on base where I stayed on leave during the year I was there. I was stationed in 동 두 천. Anyway, yes,
Most military posts are made to look fairly homogenous, and help people feel more at home, no matter where in the world they are. I do remember the 80s version of Seoul Station.

as a Born Londoner i can tell you bagels arent a thing here! i saw that place a while back and found it hilarious! we do sandwiches!! we have the most wonderful sandwiches and rolls but you wont really find bagels unless its in a jewish bakery. i imagine perhaps the owner went to a place called brick lane and went to the famous bagel bake - its famous because its a bit novelty and feels different almost like being in new york lol
thank you for showing us around the base and beautiful autumn colours

I agree but wouldn't call Brick Lane bagels novelty, I moved to London 14 ears ago and they were already there so not such a novelty. Also apparently going on since 1885 ;) I love them, people can say what the want but they are delish!

before I started watching I looked at your darkroom uploads and immediately found the one with the leaf and put it into my cart, cause its great... and then I just spent the last two weeks reading so much about Native American history for my American History class 🙃 and it was fascinating. So your cause really speaks to me right now ❤

Yo Cari! Funny they kept the family housing units on the base. I lived in that area from 2007-2011. I am heading to Korea 15 Dec after being away for 10 years and was just wondering what Yongsan looked like.

Not Brit, but was lucky enough to have a British friend make me brunch, and they definitely toasted their bagels!
Wasn't even with smoked salmon, just cream cheese/ butter/ jam, but yeah, the bagels were toasted.
I imagine an untoasted bagel would be kind of doughy/ chewy?

  • @sophieyoung4574
    @sophieyoung4574 2 роки тому +8

My British, London, bagel obsessed opinion…Brick Lane (in east London) has been the home to bagels for nearly 200 years, they are smaller than the bagels you get in shops etc and they do not come toasted (you also only get one type-plain, but you sand have them filled with lox, cream cheese, salt beef etc) Just for the bagel they are approx 60p each (900ish won) the famous bakery is open 24 hours a day. They are small (surprising light) morsels of deliciousness.
It’s bread, so down to own preference but usually you would eat untoasted on the day of purchase and toasted after that, to “freshen” it up a bit. Usually the tougher bagels are ones that have been boiled too long (just my opinion) I ❤️ 🥯🥯🥯

Thank you for going to Yongsan Army base.. I think you were on the South post.. that’s where most everyone stayed while they were there, however there were some barracks by the health clinic where I worked on the main post. The men and Katusa’s lived in those.. The women vets and married and those with families lived on the South post. I’m still amazed that no one is there ! Are you glad you went there ? I had a blast there and even married over there by the American and Korean embassy.. Fun video.. Korea has come a long way since I was there in 1973-74..

Yongsan has basically been reduced in size to just encompass the Dragon Hill Lodge. That will still be a hotel for the U.S. military. The area of Yongsan garrison known Camp Coiner, a separate Army camp until the size of Yongsan swelled and enveloped it, is supposed to be the future site of the U.S. embassy.

In the Yongsan Garrison, there used to be an education center that was operated by the University of Maryland. I went there during the summer semester. That was before the US army base in Pyeongtaek was built. At that time, civilian students of that education center were allowed to enter that base.

Thank you Cari for showing me Yongsan Base, how it looks now. When I was last there was...Can't remember what year. I was able to get in, thanks to my GI friend. I had a crab leg and prime rib dinner for 12 US. The officer club had slot machines and a Filipino band, I remember. It must have been late 90s or early 2000s. It was US indeed in the middle of Seoul.

As someone who grew up on military stations, it's strange how all of them just feel like home - no matter the city. 😄
Interesting idea to retain it so - i'm sure the civilians would be curious to see how it looks, especially since its the American feel in the middle of Seoul.
A park in the middle of the city (from all the maps i've seen, Yongsan is very central!) would be such a joy!
    Loved them autumn feels! 🍂

Its amazing that you were not able to visit the base when it was functioning. The seven years I lived in Seoul (1996-2003) I made friends with people in the clubs in itaewon which later became friendships. Those friendships had their perks, they would always invite me on base to Dragon Hill lodge for their Mexican nights or seafood nights. I remember stuffing my face with tacos and enchiladas and great margaritas for what was about 20 use dollars aka 22,000 won. I could barely get a 1/5 of that and not as nice in TGIF's or Tony Romas in Myungdong. Another nice perk was being able to get things from the commesary. Technically we were not allowed inside but could send friends to shop for us, they had a few "marts" around the base on both sides of the road and anyone on base could do simple shopping. Pre covid (2019) I did managed to go to Itaewon since at that time the Netflix drama about itaewon bar was all the rave. I was shocked how dead itaewon was on a Saturday night at midnight. It did make me miss my good old days. I do miss my ginkgo leave strolls..

Those barracks give off strong college/summer camp vibes. Semi-dark academia if it had more of an American Southwest flavor? It's so cool that Yongsan is being turned into a park. As for how to open up your email without feeling like you're both being smacked in the face and falling into an abyss, yes, make filters, labels, and actions like mark as read or put into trash. It will take some time in the beginning to set things up, but once you do and then fine-tune as you go, it'll be so much easier to wade through the chaos.

Gosh, the army base looks so surreal because of the normalcy of the homes. It could just be any subdivision in the United States. It's amazing how they have awakened a lot of nostalgia for some people though and drawn a lot of interest from people who would like to visit. I definitely got a kick out of the London Museum of Bagels. I don't think bagels are a particularly iconic food in London, no -- but I still love the idea and interesting decor for some reason.

the base gave me eerie Lost energy, or maybe Wandavision... especially the barbecue set up?? idk. Makes me want to know what they're hiding there behind the cookie cutter-ness and the guise of Mary Lu lol. I love how a place with so much history can feel both so alive and abandoned at the same time, super cool!

It's interesting to see how Korea made use of the US after. The base I know of here has become some sort of industrial and business park. Still a few buildings around from the time when it was an active base, but many have been turned into offices or restaurants. I think there's a few other bases around too.

Also, so cool that you managed to see the eclipse! It was already morning in my country when it happened and below the horizon so I missed it :(

This is my favorite vlog of yours Cari Cakes. I used to work as a civilian on Yongsan. Would you be interested in visiting its replacement, the very active Camp Humphreys? It is one of the most unique American experiments anywhere in the world with ten years in planning costing over ten billion USD.
