Peavey speakers are designed to self destruct. When I get my new one, I will make sure to remove the foam material off. On a side note, I don't like the frequency response of the Scorpions. I replaced them for PRV Audio ones with a higher frequency response and sounds MUCH better.
Very common issue with that era peavey. Had then in mine but since they didn't heat up they never had the dust melt. A good coil gap cleaning does the treat.
There are many reasons I won't use powered speakers... 1.. My speaker towers can lift 350 lbs. 4 passive speakers (SP5 Peaveys) weights just under that. Add amps and can't lift it. 2... Way more expensive. I need 12 pair at all times. I charge $300.00 a gig... can't afford them. 3... I need then to string a bunch of power cods up my towers 25 ft high. 4... The amps are always the first thing to fail on powered speakers. 5... All my events are outside, it rains in Oregon and I do Christmas events in the winter. Powered speakers don't do well in the rain. My amps are safe and dry in my vans, and I use plastic PV15 Peaveys in bad weather with no issues. Finally... if I find the need for more or less power, I simply use a different Amp, I am not stuck with what came in the speaker. I Own 8 powered mixers and countless amps already...
Not to mention the absolute crappy class-d amps nowadays! There’s a “reason” why external amps are bigger, plus the better sound quality of the older ones
Powered speakers will never sound as good as a passive speaker. They may be lighter and easier to manage and make for a faster setup but the quality of a well setup passive speaker setup will always give you longer service a sound better. But I guess for all the sissies that complain about how heavy the passives are powered is the way to go.

Is there anything you can't repair?😅
