Wonderful tribute to your father.. I enjoyed your video. It reminded me of my climb in the early 90's. Your father's words ring true, smell the pines. Life is short........ smell the pines!
Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves -- or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth. -Ayn Rand
I know this was almost 4 years ago but that was freaking awesome man. When you were taking about beating the lightning and thunder storms...PLOT TWIST YOU WERE ALREADY THERE! kept watching and then PLOT TWIST NUBMRE 2 AND DAMN WAS IT A FEELS TRIP...GEEEEZ MA HEART MAN. You're dad was proud of you, congrats.
awesome. will be going to visit the lone pine area to drive the mine there and will definitely be going to the beginning of the trail to take pictures. at least I can say I was by there. nice video. cheers
Good deal man,..that was an awesome accomplishment, and honor to your dad...the beauty of the world God formed with His words. From nothing to something.
Great video. Great message. Thank you. Did the climb 7 yrs ago, and planning to do it again, possibly this year. Maybe your dad wouldn't have made the trek; but, he would have been proud of you for your effort and success.
Awesome hike. I only got as far as 13,700' before turning back due to clouds and thunder. I was so beat by then that I didn't mind...at the time. Would still love to get to the top. Quite an accomplishment.
Fun times... your dad would be proud my friend, you have done something so few ever achieve... be proud and never stop trekking man.... I know I won't!
Beautiful video. I've been lucky enough to summit Whitney three times, all from the west side and twice sleeping in the hut. Would go back again in a heartbeat.
Well done!! My Dad is gone now too so I felt everything you had to say about your Dad. My name is also up there from 1971. I don't remember breathing so hard at the top but I was only 22. Again loved the personal video you shared. All the best..
I tried To summit this pass summer(July) but unfortunately had to turn back around after reaching the safety cables. I will try to summit again this year 2017 / thanks for such a great share!
No, he is not an unsafe hiker. He hiked at night to avoid the very real risk of lightning strikes, He was on an established non-technical trail with a lot of traffic. This is standard operating procedure in Colorado as well.
My ultimate bucket list item is to summit Whitney. Have put in for a permit, and hopefully me, my son and some other Boy Scouts will be attempting it this summer.
Nature is the great escape. Good work, although I don't think you needed to start so early. You miss so much in the dark. I soloed 3 3/4 times. Its not so bad, but I suppose more fun with a friend. Another recommended hike similar to Whitney is Kearsarge Pass in the Onion Valley just farther up the highway from Lone Pine. Lower altitude but equal views.
well done on both the hike and the video, and you did it solo, wow. know exactly how you feel about your Dad, mine was the same- he didn't hike as hard as i do but taught me to want to see this kind of thing
Dude your the man, I've done Whitney about 6 times now but never night-hiked solo. After seeing this vid I think maybe I give it a whirl. You ever consider doin the mountaineers route?
Kal Kobra just Did Mount San Antonio (Baldy) not too hard, but its the first mountain I've every summited. Mt Badden Powell and San Gorgonio are next on my list
Great video, really enjoyed it and very helpful. For those of you wanting to do the hike, I have a full guide to the hike, getting permits, dealing with altitude, and all that jazz on my blog here: hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/hiking-la/mt-whitney-hike/
Peakbagging I hope you'll post another video. This was great. I like all of your comments and helpful (you only know if you go) tips. I'm planning this trek with my teenage son now. Maybe next year.
Peakbagging put in my lottery attempt for 2015 finally ready myself/ if not this year, soon.. /edit/ got my overnight permit for August hope i can make it all the way
Were you afraid of bears or any issue with it? I am going to do it solo this June 24th. A little afraid of bears and animal danger. I should be ok with training for hike, but a little concern of animals
Nah. You can get a bear canister to hike with, although I didn't feel it was necessary. If you camp anywhere around Portal there are bear lockers to keep you food in. Don't keep anything in cars. Good luck. We are heading back up this Sept. :)
i did it august 11 2015! your video was the first one i watched and still one of my favorites, thank you again for giving me the information and showing me i might have a shot at this,- turned out my trip went similarly, my buddy had a bad hernia and cancelled last minute, i went alone. Was the last one on the mtn that day....
+potatothorn Awesome man! Great work. Appreciate the comment. I did it again about a year ago but I just never got around to doing another video. This time it was with a group... a MUCH different experience than solo. Nice job!
Why do you need a permit to walk up a frickin' mountain?? OK, Everest et al is understandable because they're the highest mountains in the world and in a foreign country. I'm from the UK so I don't know if this is the same for other US mountains or not but I've never heard of it.
Because it's only a few hours from Los Angeles and there would be a ton of unprepared idiots who think they would like to attempt the challenge of the lower U.S. highest mountain, which would create massive crowds, trash and ruined trails. Not to mention the tax on medical first responders when so many people will be injured or killed.

Yes, yes it is.
Dude, it looks like you got shortchanged with your aplenglow.
Spent some time resting there, saw it all in it's glory. Some pics show the full effect.
Not unsafe at all if you should prepare and know the trail ahead of time.
