The way they're pushing it, it's more likely that these smart meters are in the interests of the companies rather than the service users.

Just another way of boosting profits. Get rid of the meter readers and all the costs of employing them. Then automatically make price increases at peak times.

No one needs a smart meter all you need to do is submit once a month your meter readings, all you've done through getting a smart meter is giving your supplier the ability to cut you off remotely.

That's pretty much my conclusion too. The display is all very nice and shiny, but it really doesn't tell you anything you dont already know: Use more, pay more. Use less, pay less. I'm in absolutely no rush to get a smart meter.

Yeah. I think it's a "nice to have" to get accurate readings and no visit from the energy company, but not a money saver

The In Home display is really just to keep you sweet. In my opinion its a cost thats not needed. They should be pushing tbe data to your phone and pushing alerts that way. The real benifit is now the grid is under control for load balancing..which is a good thing.

Smart meters are in preparation for timed charges, so you pay more for your 'lecky when demand increases etc.... They don't offer the consumer any benefit, just the energy supplier.

Whats the problem? I just go outside take the reading and pop it off to the energy company. Revised bill in a few hours, easy and efficient and accurate. I don't need to know how much energy I am using because I already know! Hit the off switch if you don't need it! I cannot see the point of having a visual display telling me that I am not using any energy when I am sitting with a blanket round me, freezing my bits off knowing that I am saving money!

Smart meters are not for our benefit. The energy companies can cut your supply when they want and without having to pay you a visit especially if demand out strips available supply. They can change your tariff at any time and if you end up in debt they can put you on a pre payment tariff without telling

Important to make the distinction between a smart meter and an energy monitor. The smart meter is the box of tricks which is connected to the electricity supply before the fuse board and sends readings back to the electricity company at various intervals (and can be programmed remotely by them), this is the device that replaces your old meter. The energy monitor is the standalone unit showing how much you've used in kwh/£, and these devices can be bought separately but have a clamp to go round the meter tails(large pair of cables) to sense the current flow and send that info wirelessly to the monitor to calculate usage. The clamp system is not needed with the monitor supplied when the smart meter is fitted as that's built in to the smart meter.
Neither of them will save you any money unless you actually use less electricity, the idea of the monitor is to help you see what things cost to use, and some years back they were given out for free by some electricity providers. Going forward smart meters will most likely be used for variable charging rates depending on time of day.

Some of those fancy screens cost ££ to run, I looked at one a while ago and it was over £3 per month just to have a screen saying what electric you are using, if I'm cooking or doing diy I know I'm using electricity, I don't need a screen to tell me I've just used 15p to cook dinner.

The only way I saved energy was to check my usage. I checked either with a kilowatt meter or the product wattage online/on the box and swapped out all my huge appliances
    - coffee machine - 1800 watts to 750 watts (single cup) or do a manual pour over with my travel/camping kettle.
    - microwave - 1000 watts to 750
    - kettle - 2400 to a camping one - 300 watts now.
My provider in Australia has my usage available online, just few days behind.
If you know how much your appliances use, you can check your peak and off peak times (if applicable) and try to use the power hungry ones during those times, or change the way you use things e.g boil the kettle or make a pot of coffee and pop it in a thermos instead of making a fresh pot every time.

It takes a couple of minutes to read and send your meter readings on your energy company’s ap, I send mine on the last day of each month. These devices are not end to end encrypted so they can be hacked. EON gave me a device years ago that links to your power supply cable and tells you what power you are using. Smart meters use KVA instead of KW so the amount of power they send you is less because they can see the end use. Because of the losses over the power cables they normally have to send you more power in order to make up that loss. With a KVA smart meter you pay extra for that loss. If you do the maths a 45amp system on a smart meter only gives you 39 amps, if you want more you pay more.

Why aren't new suppliers coming to market who can buy gas and electric at the current lower prices and pass it on to the consumers. Is it a closed shop with no competition. Forcing consumers to pay through the nose for gas and electric the current suppliers paid to much for?
I am with Octopus and they hound me every month for meter readings and if I don't give them readings with in a couple of days they stick on estimated readings. This means I now have a bill to pay with in 14 days.
There contract specifically states that they would only do this IF they have not been supplied with meter readings for 3 months. I have had the discussion with them several times and it just falls on deaf ears.
I can only assume they are a bit miffed because I cancelled my dd last year as they were going to increase my dd form £184 to £600 a month. I know they bang on about you being in full control of your dd with them, but you are not. I was unable to change my dd to below there £600 setting.
Due to there doubling of the electric charge and tripling of the gas, minus the obvious government interventions, I was still going to pay over twice as much per unit for gas and nearly that for electric. In reality I cut right back and since the start of last October 2022. I have averaged a monthly charge for both electric/gas of approximately £ 90. That's with the government £66/67 taken off the bills.

I don't want to be rude, but a smart meter is for stupid people.
A smart meter is like cash compared to a credit card that makes people lose track of how much they spend, nothing more.
I also don't see how such a meter could save me money, it's just ridiculous.
The only thing it can do is suggest to lower your standard of living, your comfort.
I can't install a smart meter because my house is isolated against radiation, a not so smart health risk of this meter.
Beside that, how can a smart meter save power consumption?
My A+++ refrigerator will not use less power with a smart meter.
My sound system only uses less wen it's switched off.
My heating system uses a compressor and pumps water through 200 meters of tubing into the ground and is the most energy efficient system currently available.
If you turn it down for certain periods (being away for the day) it will consume only more power.
I invested 80.000 Euro's into using less power which is a lot smarter then a smart meter which in fact is nothing more then a spy in your home.

Great video Andy, I use to have my smart meter display switched off and in the cupboard until the prices started to rocket from last October. The smart meter displays are of limited value but you can get readings from them at the end of the month to check against your bills, especially if the6 a4e still occasionally saying estimate.
You are right the biggest saving is being with the right provider, however these days most of the Big 5 and even the biggest 10 suppliers are at the Price Cap and petitioning the government to raise it higher as they are loosing money. There is one exception. Who are you with now?
In current market, there is value looking at the energy consumption beginning and the end of the day and considering, boiling the kettle once instead of 5 times before making a cuppa, turning off all switches of appliances on standby overnight or if not in use, it can make a difference.

Smart meters are for the company's benefit.
The customer gets nothing in return.
If I switch off everything I'm not using I won't be wasting energy. I don't need a bl00dy meter to tell me that!
If I need to do laundry cos I'm running out of clean clothes... am I going to decide not to do it because that poxy meter is telling me it will cost a bit more money?
Of course it will cost a bit more money! Duh! I don't need a stupid meter to tell me that: I need clean clothes!
I don't need a meter to send usage back to the company... how effin hard is it to read a meter and send the reading in?
(I do remember when it was the company's responsibility to gather the metre readings: but now it's switched to the customer... as they are now 'employing' me to do 'their' work - shouldn't I get paid? My callout charge is £100 and there is a minimum 1 hour (£200) fixed fee. Thank you very much.
Smart meters benefit the company only: it reduces their costs (no need to pay staff to read meters, etc) and, apparently, allows them to remotely alter/disable the supply if they wish... That is *not* good.
And finally, it is just another bit of stuff that can go wrong... I want less complexity in life... not more.

more than a tele to run. If you don’t know what uses the most power in your house then you’re lost anyway. These devises are monitoring units
which log every devise you switch on and the time that occurs 24 hours a day. It’s all part of the governments policy on control. They can switch
your power off at any time regardless of right to do so. I simple device that clamps over your electric supply cable can be purchased for £14.50

Let's be fair none of the products will "Save" you money, you pay to what you use, period. The only thing which will cost you money is not moving to a different provider to get the best contract/ price. I've heard, but not confirmed, if you go with one provider and they install a smart meter, then you want to move to another provider, they may not support your new meter! You really don't want to go anywhere near a smart meter at all. There's so much they can do them and it's not for your benefit. People should look in to it. Or pay an awful price in the end. I take it your in the energy company's pocket.

BY HAVING A SMART METER you lose ALLL OF YOUR CONSUMER RIGHTS. Meaning that they can cut you off remotely .

1, YOU DON'T LEGALLY HAVE TO HAVE ONE, 2, IF YOU GET ONE WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT YOU CAN LEGALLY HAVE IT TAKEN DOWN, 3, IT'S 50/50 ONE PART IS A METER THE OTHER IS A COMPUTER, 4, IT'S ONLY THE COMPANY WHO BENEFITS, THE COMPUTER CAN SEE WHEN YOU PUT YOUR TV ON OR HAVE A SHOWER THEN THAT TELLS THE COMPANY YOU'RE PEAK TIMES OF USE , I KEEP GETTING LETTERS SAYING YOUR METER IS OLD AND NEEDS A UPGRADE, WE GOT SOME BOOKING DATES LEFT, LITTLE DO THEY KNOW THAT, MY METER IS NOT IN MY FLAT IT'S IN DIFFERENT PLACE, 5, IT'S BEEN SAID THEY ARE A SLEIGHT CHANCE OF BEING A FIRE RISK ALSO.

It's not compulsory to get a smart meter but if your meter stops working there are no other options other than to have one installed 🤬

My old meter stopped working and they insisted on giving me a smart meter... Three hours after the engineer switched it twice and tried to get it to connect not only did I learn a lot of colourful language but he gave me a replacement meter the same as my old one! Despite living underneath a mobile phone mast the smart meters wouldn't connect...

Totally and utterly pointless. Broadcasting your energy usage, saving you nothing. Perhaps a benefit to those who cannot read a meter, but that’s all.
