Bravo for playing Dead Can Dance/This Mortal Coil-adjecent Heavenly Bodies! Singer Caroline Seaman (guest, This Mortal Coil, 808 State, Airheadz; sleeve model, Heavenly Voices I & II, Into Paradise's "For No One") passed away a few years ago, as did her ex-husband photographer Stefan de Batselier. Crucial Ethereal entries, too, are UK's Third Mind Records and USA's C'est La Mort, which had several artists in common, including by Heavenly Bodies, Area, Beautiful Pea Green Boat, Courage of Lassie, etc. Additionally, Strange Boutique-run label Bedazzled Records.
Thank you very much for the shout-out, Dante! Widower is a fantastic album and I was glad to have the opportunity to play it on the radio. One thing I think I should mention is that my show isn’t on right now, since being a (small) college station, WQAQ is closed during summer vacation. The show will be back next semester though (sometime around the beginning of September), since I’ve really enjoyed doing it. I'm pretty sure it’ll be at the same timeslot (Monday night, technically Tuesday, at midnight), but if that does change I’ll comment again here. Also, great video! I’ve played some of the bands you talked about here on my show (Dead Can Dance and Autumn’s Grey Solace were favorites) but I haven’t delved as deep into ethereal wave as I’d like to; have been meaning to check out Esben and the Witch for a while in particular. Really good overview all around.
@dante_dagger that LYCIA beanie I called out in a previous video clued me into that :D John Fryer is still doing production work, too, if you weren't aware, doing stuff with a few artists on COP International now.
Excellent video and this is a great reminder for me that I need to get This Mortal Coil someday along with some other albums to add to my “listen to later” The only thing I’d like to ask is what exactly is(if any) the difference between Etherealwave and Neoclassical Darkwave or are they just extremely adjacent.
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Generally, ethereal wave is more focused on the washed out guitars and hypnotic effects while neoclassical is more orchestral. There is a ton of overlap, especially where This Mortal Coil and Black Tape for a Blue Girl are concerned. I would say a great identifiable example of an artist doing both would be to compare Dead Can Dance’s songs “Ocean” vs. “Cantara”.
I loved this deep dive! My favorite genre of music. Random but back when my fiance and I were first dating, he was worried that I would hate his band because I'm not a metal fan at all. I think we were both surprised at how much I took to it as a long time ethereal wave/shoegaze/goth fan. Unrelated but I'd love to see a video about dream pop!
The Blue Obscurities is one of my rainy day albums 💙 Also regarding Faith and the Muse, I've actually met William Faith once. hes super friendly and has a fun sense of humor irl haha
Funny how I don't listen that much to this style but knew a great part of the bands you cited here by name. I've listened to solo works by Brendan Perry and of course David Galas, which made some gorgeous solo albums. He also collaborated to Methadrone, whose two last albums are pretty much in ethereal style, and was a favourite of mine for years.
@@dante_dagger Great to see you know Methadrone! I was a total fanboy for years. I even got a bonus prom CD given with the last album that was edited to only 25 pieces. I still listen to these albums sometimes, such an atmosphere!
Love this "a deep dive" format even though this music is not my cup of tea. Dante, would you consider bands like Rajna or Am'ganesha'n as ethereal wave?
Thank you! I’ve listened to a bit of both and I feel as though they lean a bit more into tribal and middle eastern stuff, but the vocals and atmosphere definitely bear resemblance to ethereal wave.
Great video, but if i could just point out one thing, i think you could maybe stop/change the music when a new chapter begins, that would make the video even more dynamic or " alive " if i can say ? Otherwise i'm hoping for a video on Darkwave ^^
I'm glad you took the time to talk about Lycia. Very hard to find any videos saying more than the band name.

Looking forward to hearing you around Sept then!

Thank you Natalie!!!
Always great videos! Now I got some more bands to check out. Thanks so much!!

That’s awesome! What band was he playing in?
Another great video, what's that ambient background music?
I actually listed the songs in the description! I still need to throw time stamps on them
etherealwave!! sharing this with the goths :)
edit: for etherealwave, Trance to the Sun are my absolute favorite in the genre. very cool band
They are soooo haunting and unsettling, I love their sound.

Also have you heard of Kælan Mikla? Theyre darkwave but some of their tracks lean into an ethereal sound from what I've heard
@@indigoblur I have, they’re great!!
@@dante_dagger can you explain minimal wave and other Goth sub genres of the music?
Darkwave
Post punk
Coldwave
Deathrock

It is so funny you mention Methadrone, that was also my entrance to David Galas’ work as well. Sterility is a gorgeous album.

Hey Dante! Can you share some more of the most disturbing, dark and depressive albums you know?
Yes, my next video will actually be exactly that. I needed a tolerance break. :)
By the way, like to see your deep dive on Darkwave as well ❤️🩹
That can be arranged!
