Wimbledon 1999 introduced 4 amazing young talents: 1. Mirjana Lučić 2. Alexandra Stevenson 3. Kim Clijsters 4. Jelena Dokić. Kim became number 1 in singles and doubles, Dokić got to top 10 in both singles and doubles, Mirjana had up and down career but first half of 2017 was amazing, Alexandra only played well in 2002.
Stevenson made the SF as an amateur and only turned pro afterwards. It took her until 2002 to really get used to competing week in week out and produce consistent tennis but then she struggled with injury and never regained her momentum. She also apparently had a difficult mother who interfered in her career. Dokic and Lucic both had infamously difficult family situations which ultimately meant they didn't fulfill their potential, though Dokic did reach number 4. Clijsters was the only one with a fairly normal family situation so it's no surprise she achieved by far the most.
Steffi playing for her just ok, and you can already tell her movement is compromised. The best match of the tournament was the previous one against Venus.
And of course Viva Stefi!! It was her last BIG win on the tour (as for me Lucic played extremely well this tournament & this match), that's why I really think this match really worth to be upload at last for all Stefi fans!
Her final career victory. Those 3-setters against Lucic and Venus the round prior, while great matches, likely cost her the title (to take nothing away from Davenport). Just sad she couldn't get a proper farewell, ending her career with a channel slam was too good to be true.
@@MirjanaLfan Lindsay played at a level deserving of the title and was probably the best player in the world that year. Steffi still would've had a great shot at beating her had she been healthy. Those things aren't mutually exclusive.
Lindsay Davenport was playing very well in 1999 and the outcome would still probably the same. Clay is Davenport's weakest surface and Graf needed three sets to eliminate her in the quarterfinals. It meant Davenport was playing quite well across all surfaces.

It was kind of a fluke Lindsay won the 2nd set to anyone who watched the match, and she was blown out in both sets she lost. The match stats were heavily in Graf's favor. I do agree there is a good chance Lindsay wins the final vs Graf here anyway, but not if Graf played at the level she did in the Venus quarter final, which was her best match of the tournament. Lindsay would probably beat Venus if they played her, but mainly only due to her mental edge over Venus at the time.

Of course Steffi‘s was not in best shape on the final‘s day. But she herself also had her wins against opponents who played sub-par at that given day. Lindsay deserved that title. And Steffi will always have Paris… 😍
Mirjana could hit like a mule but she was not the fastest mover and lost a bit of steam later in the match plus her error rste went up which often goes hand in hand with declining fitness. Only reason it was close imho is because graf herself wasnt at her best

Steffi's win against Davenport at the FO 99 was a far easier win than Davenport's Wimbledon 99 final win. The stats of their FO match show Steffi winning 117 points against Lindsay's 93. Whereas Davenport won the Wimbledon match only with 70-67 (She converted 2 of only 2 break points - whereas Steffi squandered her 2 break points).
