I saw this fight when it was televised in 78 in a YMCA in LONG BEACH CA. I thought that it was one of the greatest title fights I've ever seen. I would go so far as to say that no one in boxing history has fought so many quality opponents as Arguello. Check it out: There was a point where Alexis fought in succession" Alfredo Escalera, Ruben Castillo, Villomar Fernandez, Jose Luis Ramirez, Bobby Chacon, Bazooka Limon, Rolando Navaratte, Jim Watt, Boom Boom Mancini, and Cornelius Boza Edwards!
Incredible little man with courage not many boxers in any era could compare to. Pac kinda reminds me of Alexis. They both love fighting but are true warriors who love the competition. Fighters first b4 any of the BS business junk Floyd Mayweather contaminated the sport with. Miss him.
I loved the Snakeman Alfredo Escalera! I remember watching him as a kid making his way to the ring with his python wrapped around his neck. I remember watching his two fights with Arguello and rooted for him both times.
Escalera had the momentum at the end of the fight, but also a huge cut inside his mouth. The doctor decided to stop the fight. Escalera did not complain. He knew he had a huge cut inside his mouth, he knew how dangerous that was. And yet when they stop the fight Escalera had the momentum in a very close fight, going into the last two rounds. was. Escalera did not complain. He was not a crybaby. Neither Alexis Arguello. They sign the rematch, with smaller gloves, in the same place, a few months latter. That one was another bloody battle, for both. Arguello won that one by knock out. Two great fighters. Good friends.Legends of boxing.
YES he got the coverage but for all the right reasons, he fought more quality opponents than any champion in his era and with a couple of exceptions, beat them all , AND just as importantly if not more so, he was a class act, a consummate gentleman in a rough sport during a vulgar age, where and when rarely was anything but power ever acknowledged or rewarded. He was truly unique. I don't think its going out on a limb to say he was murdered, not that it matters as sad as that is R.I.P A.A.
The claim that Argüello was murdered is completely false. His wife, who was in the house with him, stated that it was suicide. I mean, an independent autopsy showed that he had powder burns on his hand. Argüello's struggles with drug and alcohol addiction were well documented, as was his long history of depression. Arguello's sufferings were almost certainly the result of brain damage suffered during some of the most brutal fights of his era. To suggest otherwise is a disservice to Arguello and all the other warriors who suffered so much because of the sport they loved.
I was there as a young teenager. Escalera had the heart of a lion, Arguello as well. Ecalera's carreer was over after this one. They should have let him go the distance. The next day, Escalera went to take out Arguello for lunch and he could not get out of bed for the beating Alfredo gave him.
That's pretty sick!...I mean I got the order screwed up, but Alexis fought ALL of those fighters in succession, just google it and you will see. The DREAM LIGHTWEIGHT fight would have been ARGUELLO-DURAN....! NO YOU DIDN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you freakin imagine THAT fight?!...I think, like the Pryor fight, that DURAN is too big for Alexis at that weight, BUT at featherweight, I dont think ANYONE could ever have beaten him, but that's just one mans opinion
Puerto Rico is very small island and we has more than 60 world champions. Can you imagine if this island were twice as big Probably 120 champion or more. But in my opinion Wilfredo Gomez is the greatest 18 times defeat his title all for Ko
Arguello always got all the press coverage, but Escalera was all Arguello could handle both fights. Two ATG's giving everything they got at every moment. RIP Alexis.
Escalera had a big heart but he wasn't much of a technician was he? Continuously off balance and swinging wildly. He reminds me of Mayorga who was even uncoordinated...
Nope he was not. We used to train in the same gym when I was a kid. I knew them all…. they were my heroes. I was a kid and cried when Escalera lost. All he said was; this is boxing. He never stopped going for the victory until the end but he was loosing, period.
AMEN, THAT GOMEZ-ZARATE fight was awesome!! , as was GOMEZ-PINTOR! ZARATE-ZAMORA or SANCHEZ-GOMEZ!, not to mention the DURAN-DEJESUS fights DURAN-LEONARD 1, DURAN-BARKLEY, SANCHEZ-AZUMA NELSON...I'm not EVEN gonna try, it would take TOO long The late 70's through the 80's were unique!

Lol you have lost your mind
@@dmolina7094 Duran's quality of competition was no where near the level of Arguello's. Not at lightweight and below. Not even close.

Alexis Arguello a great Legend. R.I.P We Miss You Brother. GOD Bless You.
Alexis Arguello.............my favourite boxeur ever

I don't think they should have stopped the fight, Escalera was fine and could have survived two more rounds and won the split decision
