Original Kanku kata of Kyokushin karate, 1967 version

  • I first learned this kata around 1976 from Shihan Bobby Lowe in Hawai'i. I later received further instruction in it from Kyokushinkai-kan Karate-Do founder Sosai Masutatsu Oyama and All-Japan Champion and Kudo founder Takashi Azuma.
    This kata is performed as presented in the 1967 book 'Advanced Karate' by Mas Oyama (see pages 160-183). It was slightly altered, by honbu, within a year or two after I first learned it.
    This video replaces an earlier one where, after looking at it, I messed-up. Although still not perfect, I hope you all enjoy or maybe even learn something from this little bit of history. OSS!

    Osu! That is exactly the Kanku Kata version that I learned from my Sensei (Yoshifumi Ito Shihan) and that is the version I teach to my students. Thank you for posting.
