Man, that Ranger Death denouement was just TOO real. Aurora messed me up hard, I haven't felt comfortable in a theatre since 2012. Hoping Kev leaves that in his back pocket to use later somewhere, cause it's just TOO good.
Because of Aurora? Americans have been watching movies in theaters for a hundred years. One mass shooting at a midnight show shouldn’t dissuade you from enjoying the movies. Statistically you have more chance of dying in a car accident on the way to the theater than a mass shooting.
I worked in a movie theatre when that happened. I remember my girlfriend at the time, who had stopped working at that theatre with me at that point, was nervous all day during my shift. It was pretty weird that day. I wouldn’t say we were all on edge, but I remember everyone, especially management and security, were a lot more alert than they already were beforehand.
I watched this video before I watched clerks 3 and after I finished it, I can't say that this wasn't a great movie. It's sad yes, but in my opinion it was a clerks ending. Loved it
Kevin has been trying to kill Dante from the word jump and finally succeeded in that wish fulfillment, but that will prove to be a wishing well fools errand. Even at age 52 and the post-perspective aftermath of heart attack, Kevin can still be short sighted and not see the forest for the trees. He feels he's come full circle and closed the loop, but time and experience has proven that Mr Smith always has more to add to a story and his art given more years and the opportunity. And the day will come, seven, maybe eight years from now where something will happen to him in reality that he'll want to express through his Dante Hicks avatar and realize he was premature in his rush to assassinate his artistic surrogate bread and butter. Then again, Kevin is never more interesting than when he writes himself into a corner and how he writes himself out. That's where the creativity really breaks ground in new and unexpected ways with him when he filters it all through his life imitates art machine imagination process. Plus, he is a career catholic so it's hardwired into his DNA the whole resurrection process angle. Dante being dead could ultimately still be the middle of his story arc when he comes back three days later after death as returning deity, Force ghost, anti-christ figure or Gen Z undead hipster zombie.
Ngl, this could be Clerks 4 and I'd stand in line for a year to see it. With Dante haunting a hopelessly bored Randall as he runs his nerdville in the parking lot
I love Kevin Smith, I don't love every single one of his movies, but I love the guy regardless. I do love the Clerks trilogy but my favorite movie is Chasing Amy. I also really, really love Dogma.
I'll watch the video later, but one thing that I wanted to see in the version that we got, is Alanis Morrissette make a cameo appearance in the theater.
@Frogmanpipes oh I understand it just fine. His new one was just a mess that meandered between sickeningly melodramatic and oversentimental, and self-referential to the point of being downright masturbatory - "hey, remember this???" rinse and repeat
Never been the hugest Kevin Smith fan but the way he engages with his fan here is really cool. He interrupted the kid's question to tell him a story, that's so frickin cool.
Thanks much for posting this as I had heard KS had a script for C3 for a long time and then changed it after his heart attack. But I do have to disagree with KS here. For me, C2 is a much better film that Clerks. As KS seems to say, Clerks was a way for him to make certain jokes he had and comment on certain area of society. C2 is much better imo because its an actual movie with a story, character development, etc. After C2 was released I was very hopeful that we were going to get a lot more of that type of film via the VA universe, in a similar form that Marvel and DC later perfected. But it just wasnt to be I guess. For me, Reboot was an unwatchable disaster. While C3 isnt as bad as Reboot, its still not very good, as it just seems to be a "how I made Clerks", when didnt we get that with Zack and Miri? And this previous version of C3, I dont think that would have worked either. Ill still watch Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Strike Back and C2 whenever they are on. I do think KS had endless options after C2 by pulling from and continuing to mix/mash/play with the VA characters.
I went to the cinema to see clerks 2 😢 I refused to go see 3 because of the enormous feeling that it was going to be 3 times as bad as 2 !!!! If he made this version I think it would have renewed my faith in this man !
Honestly I was hoping they'd make references to katyln being in the mental hospital or veronica ending up with sing lol but clerks 3 was good, that ending was pretty damn heart wrenching too.
While I agree this is way too dark, when I heard the bit at the end that set up Jay and Silent Bob's now-cancelled appearance in Moose Jaws, I got chills.
idk if i'd say "now cancelled" as late as this past december at a convention i went to he mentioned wanted to do moosejaws (and multiple sequels) and how the studio was cool with it
@@Enembie I know the movie is still happening (can't wait, BTW), what I called "cancelled" was Jay and Silent Bob's appearance in it. Sorry, English not my first language, all that... A few years ago Kevin said that not only did he want to put Jay and Silent Bob in Moose Jaws, he also intended to make Silent Bob one of the moose's victims, to kill him off for good. After Kevin's heart attack, he changed his mind and last I've heard of Moose Jaws, he was writing a new draft that didn't include Jay and Silent Bob anymore.
Honestly the original script can definitely be a great movie but Jeff and Brian both agreed that it wouldn’t be a good movie for Clerks or the characters and I definitely agree but this would definitely be a good movie. The only thing is Jay and Silent Bob they’re scenes in this script are great. Plus John Goodman!!!! Come on!!!
I love Kevin, and we as fans love Jeff Anderson and Bryan O'Halloran (really hope I spelled that right I always get it wrong) but asking them to work through the theater scene would have been egregiously bad. Everything about the other aspects of it would actually make for a great movie that I think Kevin in particular would have interesting things to say about, but the theater thing is awful and would have likely tanked his career.
Normal people during Q&As: Gives a one or two minute response, if even that. Kevin Smith During Q&As: Spends almost 40 minutes responding to a question.
"None of that is real though, it's very movies." The story is about Randal making a movie. Instead of THE RECYCLED IDEA of just filming "Clerks"- What if Randal writes this less realistic movie, considering it's his FIRST TIME. You get to have your cake, eat it- And you can probably write a scene where he is forced to think about dramatizing a JOB AT QUICKSTOP only for him to realize how uninteresting the subject is on it's surface;' poking fun at yourself sort of. Most of the stuff from this original idea, like he said, is rooted in some sort of realism and/or branches from a more personal place. No, none of it HAPPENED TO HIM, but that didn't make Clerks 2 bad at all. Maybe it's just me, but THIS MOVIE about a deaf little girl who is a Hockey prodigy, in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and a Mass Shooting- makes sense for RANDAL to try and make after a near death experience, as opposed to what is meta textually a starting point/his own version of "Clerks". We all know the original film is special, it's WHY WE'RE HERE. We have documentaries, DVDs, and in 2021 "Shooting Clerks" *(a movie about the making of "Clerks")* was released. You don't have to stick to one idea, like I said- It could very funny to see Randall struggling as to how to make working at Quick Stop dramatic before giving up and just writing down a memory of the past. If anything, his inability to make it a story, and instead going straight to just documenting past moments of his life may be in the same tone as the story we got, without being so front and center "RANDAL IS ME. (and so is Dante?) EVERYBODY GOT THAT?!" about it. Also, while I respect his sentiment regarding the original ending being a "joke" in the context of the entire film- That's NOT how he filmed it. Didn't feel like much of a punchline. I love Kevin and hate to say I didn't enjoy the 3rd one- Personally. Not like it even matters. (Why do I feel like the lack of Mosier had something to do with it?)
Clerks 3, was ok, and better than anything he has made in last decade. But, Randals motivation made zero sense, my name is Earle showed Carson Dailey speaking New age mumbo jumbo, so Earle starred own religion based off of the philosophy good things happen to good people, and does the normal new to faith thing of a trying to get everyone involved, to vecome woke, and b drive old friends crazy telling them of sins of not being part of religion. Randal, a guy that never had any aspirations to film movies, he talks about them formerly worked in video store, but never talked of how he would refilm Star Wars, decides on a whim to make a movie about his life. Again easy enough to have him working public access tv, reviewing movies with his friend, saying Hollywood people are hacks, has heart attack, decides to make a movie to show world how it's done.
I could look past the 2nd movies obvious flaws because the basic framework of the story arc was kinda decent. Clerks 3 doesn't even have that. That fucking flick felt like it was made over the weekend. Smith phoned it in, man. Maybe he should have stopped making movies after Yoga Hosers. I'm not even mad that the J&SB Reboot completely went under my radar. You guys need to take off your rose-tinted goggles. Cool person, but average film maker at best.
Clerks and Chasing Amy were brilliant movies. Mallrats, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, and Clerks II are definitely products of their time, but they’re entertaining and hilarious. “Artifice” or not, they at least recall an era when comedy had fewer constraints. Clerks III, like much of Smith's work in the past decade, is self-indulgent hogwash plagued by his narcissism. Smith’s unmistakable insecurity undermines his own efforts. The way he rambles on in this video is cringe-worthy, but that original script for Clerks III had the potential to be an engaging dark comedy if it retained a sense of humor. What we ended up getting in its place was far more deserving of a spot on the cutting room floor.
This sounds infinitely better than the crock of shit he ended up putting out but he prob wouldve fucked this version up to. How did he not see how terrible everything was going while he was shooting Clerks 3, there was no saving that shit in the edit

Dante being dead could ultimately still be the middle of his story arc when he comes back three days later after death as returning deity, Force ghost, anti-christ figure or Gen Z undead hipster zombie.
well, God is very real in the Askewniverse, just have her bring him back to life.
Ngl, this could be Clerks 4 and I'd stand in line for a year to see it. With Dante haunting a hopelessly bored Randall as he runs his nerdville in the parking lot
Oh nice, pretty sure this is the Anaheim show I flew out to!? This was a great q&a
you dont remember being there?
@@RandyReviews1990 I remember, just figured maybe it could have been filmed at a different show. People usually ask similar questions lol
I love Kevin Smith, I don't love every single one of his movies, but I love the guy regardless. I do love the Clerks trilogy but my favorite movie is Chasing Amy. I also really, really love Dogma.
Dogma is my favorite, by far. Red State 2nd place
Man I wish I could get a copy of dogma
As a Kevin Smith fan. And Clerks being one of my favorite movies. I'm glad he didn't make the original version.
Thanks for posting this, I always wondered what the 1st draft was going to be about.
This sounds epic AF I would have loved this so much haha 😂😂😂😂
me too i wish kev would have went with that script!
Thanks man, made my day. ❤
I'll watch the video later, but one thing that I wanted to see in the version that we got, is Alanis Morrissette make a cameo appearance in the theater.
23:21 - The NHL has had women play. The first being a goalie by the name of Manon Rhéaume back in 1992.
Everything about this version sounds like a better movie than the Clerks 3 he actually made.
I agree. It's more creative, has some fun social commentary, and I laughed more at the ideas than I think I did in watching the actual final movie.
Then you don't understand Kevin smith or Clerks.
@Frogmanpipes oh I understand it just fine. His new one was just a mess that meandered between sickeningly melodramatic and oversentimental, and self-referential to the point of being downright masturbatory - "hey, remember this???" rinse and repeat
50somethings still working a convenience store? Loserville
@@robzilla730 they *are* losers.
At least that version would have been an original story. What we got was so much of a retread. It was 75% references to the original.
Never been the hugest Kevin Smith fan but the way he engages with his fan here is really cool. He interrupted the kid's question to tell him a story, that's so frickin cool.
I Thought Clerks 3 was amazing. I'm glad he made it now in 2022. The new version of the film was so good.
Wrong
It was an a abomination
@@mccleandazza4618 easy to hate hard to create
@@screwgoogle128 Doesn’t take much to create a better script, for the abomination that was Clerks 3.
@Enoch Bullslayer it was utter trash compared to no 2
sounds like a way better movie.
This video is the perfect length
The Dark version would have been shocking and f'n amazing. I'm glad Smitty walks this planet while I do.
Clerks 3 was already pretty dark.
This sounds like Kevin was heavily influenced by Tarentino during that period of his life.
Wish they would have gone with this ending.
Kevin.... Make this movie , we need it lol
Smith was wrong to kill Dante in Clerks and he was wrong to kill Dante in Clerks 3 (both versions).
Agh, I’m crying.
Fuck this sound like the perfect movie a true RedState
How the duck was that not the dark version that was released. It seriously destroyed my urge to watch any of it again.
Inglorious Basterds being a “fuck you, I still got it” movie is incredible
I would have preferred this version.
😆 There's no "darker' version than the one we got. The one he described is 100x better...
Thank fuck I don’t ever have to watch the clerks movie with an awkward mass shooting scene
Clerks 3 WAS pretty freakn dark
Honestly the original script can definitely be a great movie but Jeff and Brian both agreed that it wouldn’t be a good movie for Clerks or the characters and I definitely agree but this would definitely be a good movie. The only thing is Jay and Silent Bob they’re scenes in this script are great. Plus John Goodman!!!! Come on!!!
This sounds like real genius.
I cried om clerks 3
Clerks 2 ..is one of my favorite films ..clerks 3 was an abomination
I could look past the 2nd movies obvious flaws because the basic framework of the story arc was kinda decent. Clerks 3 doesn't even have that. That fucking flick felt like it was made over the weekend. Smith phoned it in, man.
Maybe he should have stopped making movies after Yoga Hosers. I'm not even mad that the J&SB Reboot completely went under my radar.
You guys need to take off your rose-tinted goggles. Cool person, but average film maker at best.
reboot was the same. just recycled jokes and it LOOKS so bad.
I want to see that movie!
Hell yeah deathproof
killing rosario was so stupid considering she was so much in the movie... also the movie he did make was dark af...
The real version was way darker than this unused version imo.
Man how sycophantic was the guy asking the question.
This sounds infinitely better than the crock of shit he ended up putting out but he prob wouldve fucked this version up to. How did he not see how terrible everything was going while he was shooting Clerks 3, there was no saving that shit in the edit
Would you like some cheese with your whine?
@@FUCKINGENIOUS no, just some decent movies, thanks. Did you honestly like Clerks 3?
Guys says “Thank you Kevin” with 7 mins still left in the video 😂😂😂
You know the guy who wrote the hurricane fan fick regrets it lol
This needs to be Clerks 4!
