Suzuki Drz400 Review: From an owner’s perspective. The best used dual sport you can buy!

- Today I’ll be reviewing my 2013 Suzuki Drz400 dual sport dirtbike. I’ll be going over my likes and dislikes of the bike, ownership experience, on and off-road riding impressions, suggested modifications, specifications of the bike, and why I chose a Drz vs a used KTM or a Yamaha Wr250r.
I feel the same way about my dr650.... you ride to where you want to play,,, you play then go back home all on one machine! Cant beat that! Love the vibe, love the vid.
Your video was used in consideration of me buying A DRZ 400s. I have just picked up my new bike!!! Its a 2023 DRZ 400S!!!!!! thanks for your time and your passion you shared with your Video. Its Yellow and I Love it!!!
That’s awesome! I’m happy to know I helped with your decision 😁
I wanted to get the 2024 in competition yellow, but it's $8,500 out the door w/tax. Found a 2019 with 1,100 miles for $5,500. That yellow is sweet though, enjoy!
I loved my '01 DRZ400S. I cleaned the air filter and changed the oil every 1,000 miles and the only repairs in 17 years were a clutch and a rectifier, and that despite dropping it dozens of times. Yes, the indicators were held on by duct tape most of the time.
so you wasted a ton of money and time changing the oil early for no reason?
@@DB-sd3cw Oil is cheap and it takes little time to do a change. Dirt bikes get dust and clutch material in the oil, so anyone with half a brain will do frequent changes.
@@DB-sd3cw I pity you if you think oil is a ton of money 😂
@@67daltonknox yeah on an actual dirt bike, not a drz400s goober. Sorry about your IQ deficit not letting you see the difference.
@wiffdude I pity a dude with no like no friends no family no ambitions that just lurks in youtube comments and comments on year old posts. Sorry about your life little dude.
Love this review man, covers lots of angles that I was looking to watch about
Driving 5 hours to see a used drz400sm off Facebook marketplace if all goes well I’m gonna drive it home.
Looks like a really clean and cared for bike and I’m getting a solid deal! (3,200).
I’m beyond excited, hoping all goes well, been looking up all the videos about the bike and it looks like you can’t really go wrong with them even used unless you mistreat it, which is usually pretty visually clear if that’s the case.
Any tips? Going in 2 days! :)
Hope it goes well, let us know what happens
You nailed this review! I've had my DRZ400S for 5 yrs now, and my experience is identical👌 My bike had a few engine mods when I bought it, making it more of a E-model(FCR 39 carb, hot cams, yoshimura exhaust and 440 big bore kit). Very recently I also added the ACT wide gear ratio kit, after a tranny slide bushing mishap. This kit will let you keep the low first gear for slow technical stuff, and still make it better on highway. Like having a 6th gear👍
Thanks so much! I would love to get that big bore kit and the gearing kit, sounds like you have the perfect setup man
@@troyhill1924 , Thanks man! I was a bit lucky getting all these goodies already installed. Doing all those upgrades from scratch, would cost some money I recon. The ACT kit is also quite pricey, and require some work, as you have to split the engine, but if you have to make a complete overhaul of the engine anyway, I highly recommend it! I just love how it's setup, and won't sell it anytime soon, if ever..I'll probably hand it down to my kids😄
A tranny slide bushing mishap, huh? What went wrong with it at how many miles?
I've got the sm and love it. I threw some TKC80 tires on so that I can do a bit more off-roading and they are working out good. They also handle the twisty roads surprisingly well. I've got brand new sumo tires in the garage but just haven't felt the need to change. I'd like to get some DRZ400s wheels so that I can swap wheels instead of tires. Changing street tires is pure misery. Anyway, I just love this bike. Glad you are enjoying yours.
yeah even when mine had the original tires it was surprisingly fun in twisties, id love to be able to do the wheel/tire switch too for commuting to work. glad to hear you're loving yours too man 👍
Very cool and informative. I sold my CRF250L this spring. Had it for 7 years. Loved it. Can't ride much off road anymore due to knee issues, so I'm figuring a DRZ400SM supermoto might be just the ticket for me. With some Shinko 705 tires it'd be fun on the road and could take the occasional dry trail. That way I don't have to entirely give up trail riding yet still justify having a bike capable of it.
thanks! yeah I'd definitely say that sounds like a good idea
The super moto is extremely fun, you won't be disappointed. I've ridden on some hard packed dirt with the stock tires no problem. Gnarly stuff requires better tires but it's capable to do most stuff except mud and deep sand
@@KenpachiZarakiX Yup, that sounds good to me. Thanks for the input :-)
My DRZ is a beast! Love that thing!
I upgraded my DRZ400SM headlight to a JNS Engineering LED headlight. It updates the look of the bike and it’s very bright.
thanks, I'm gonna look into that, I've been trying to figure out the lighting situation on this thing
I've read great reviews for JNS LED headlight - but - I see a ton of $40 lookalike LEDs on eBay - do you know any1 with experience using 1 of these knock-offs?
The tractor factor is the #1 main reason I love mine.
dude the tractor factor is no joke, I love it
I whole heartedly agree with everything you said . I own a 2002 , rode the Tat from new Mexico to Oregon last summer ,with way too much camping gear loaded on it . It performed great . I just love the bike . The only thing I would like is six speed trans and fuel injection . Thanks for the great video .
Thanks man 👍
I've had 3 of these bikes with over 100kls total. Mostly road single track day rides but did do 5000kls holiday trips. I now own new KTM 500 EXC-f and 690 enduro literally had to buy 2 bikes to replace the old DRZ, yes those KTM's are awesome and super fast, but not as reliable. the 500 is built very light and cant do highway for long distances or hang lots of luggage on. 690 is heavy and single track deep mud water crossings absolutely sucks and it has no low-end grunt. DRZ can do those things reasonably well. There is no current bike that does everything the DRZ can do. plus it's cheap, easy to fix, simple to fix, and with cab, simple electronics your able to fix in the field. If you spend a few bucks I recommend buying the wide ratio gears for the bike!
I verify the DRZ after 20 years in production still an excellent choice for a dual sport bike.
thanks man ill look into the wide ratio gearing
There’s never been anything I’ve disliked about riding my DRZ, hence the reason I’ve had it since 2006. There’s a few things I didn’t like about the bike itself though… one was the huge rear fender extension, which fell off in my living room after I bought the bike and was outfitting it to ride.
Wow, thats some great praise, you sure have had the bike long enough to get to know it! Im looking for something to trail ride, not serious as im old and have broken enough bones when i was young and stupid. Was looking more hard edged stuff, but i really dont think i will be able to ride anywhere near the potential of one of these let alone something with more aggressive power and suspension.
Excellent video 🇺🇲🎉🍾🇺🇲
Thanks for sharing, keep producing more videos about the drz
This videos shows exactly why I want one so bad. A DRZ or a KTM500 exc-f and I am a happy camper because I will be able to explore areas and just drive far away til I find something. I can't wait.
a quiet exhaust is invaluable in some of the places I ride.
Just finished binge watching all your video’s. Very entertaining, catch myself laughing out loud a lot. Excellent job!! Hope to see more videos in the spring.
Quick question, what throttle tube did you buy?
I believe it’s called the zeta throttle tube
I bought a brand new one 2 years ago and I put more miles on it a year than I do my Harley or BMW S1000 RR. LOVE MINE!!
Holy shit I saw you pull out on Calumet and realized you were in Valpo too. Small world!
the drz400 looks xcellent off road, im still researching this vs the dr650 I think I would want that extra power for on road use, but the weight of the 650 might kill the off road fun, I like the reliability and price factor of these bikes, thumbs up thanks for the on road and off road drives
You’re welcome man, yeah I’d say it depends on whether you do more riding on or off road because the drz isn’t the most comfortable cruiser for high speed or distance rides
Update?
The WR250 is discontinued due to emissions I heard. They may revise it with a higher displacement to negate the power loss from restrictive exhaust. It is also a 6sp. Kawasaki just launched a 300cc SM. Great review thanks for sharing.
Nothing like the climate scam
Enjoyed your video. Honest, straight forward review. I’m thinking of the dr650 but was interested to hear you thoughts on the drz. Cheers 👍
As the happy owner of DRZ400, I agree with the opinions presented in this video.
Personally, my only complaint about the bike is that it's heavy. If it was 20kg (45lbs) lighter, it would PERFECT. I can live with the 5-speed transmission, carb, and whatever other minor nitpicks
Totally agreed 👍
You're telling me the drz is slow on the highway when I'm out here struggling to hit 65 on my xt250 with 18hp lol. I plan on upgrading to a drz as soon as some of the 2022's hit the dealers near me. The used market is just ridiculous right now.
Great review man! I knew I wanted a DRZ but you have me 100% sold now haha. Are you in PA? I'm in Lancaster
thanks man! I'm glad to hear it 👍 update me when you get one, what you gonna use it for? and no I'm in Indiana near Lake Michigan
@@troyhill1924 oh okay cool man. I saw the highway sign said 30 and that’s one of our main highways in my area. I’m gonna be living near the Maryland border working at the marina and want something to drive back and forth from the cabin and go trailing with my buddies. I think the 400 will be perfect but also looking at the 650
Great video. I love the reliability and off-road capability of the DRZ400. I’m not sure sure I could live with the seat height and the weight.
@Scott Jackson How tall are you? Im 5'9" and it works good for me but if you're shorter than that I could see it being difficult. Also the weight really becomes a bear when doing intense off-roading for sure, I think the drz is perfect for like 50/50 road and offroad use
I’m 6’ 210lbs and the height is perfect for me. The weight of it isn’t a problem either. I guess it just depends on the individual. There is some nice 250/300 sized bikes out there for smaller guys....
Haha I feel you on the power mods. Got mine cheap because the stage one upgrade had been botched. Finished the exhaust install and rejetted the carb. Now I've got a 39mm pumper carb on there and a bunch of other upgrades. Definitely need to open up that engine and let it breathe to feel the performance
Awesome. I've got it's baby brother the dr200 and I love it. I'm looking at getting the drz here soon. These bikes are dinosaurs but that's what I love about em. Ole faithful 🤘
yeah they're pretty reliable dinosaurs, I can't believe it keeps ticking after the abuse I put it thru
i feel like you and I have a very similar riding style and get wicked happy riding over pretty much anything. i just got my first drz400 and im still blown away by it, granted mine has already had some things done to it, including being a bit lower, this making my confidence a bit higher while off road because i can flat foot this bike while sitting. until i have a reason to go back to stock height, ill probably leave it there. mine also came with a Yoshimura RS-3 exhaust, which is so loud its almost criminal. i wish i had a stock exhaust for it, but then id have to re-jet from where its at, and it runs so perfectly that i dont wanna mess with it. next thing on my list are better tires than what came with it.
That’s awesome man! Your bike sounds like a sweet find! The lower seat height would’ve been wonderful for me when I first got this drz but I’ve gotten used to it somehow now, and I’d say tires are a must, they’re what I’ve noticed the most difference from
Equivalent to 5th gen 4runner, hasn't changed in forever and reliable
Cool video, I've ridden one of these before, now you've got me wanting to buy one! 😁
do it! I wish I would've gotten one years ago
Great insight man, appreciate you. Looks like the towers on top of Poor Mountain here in SW Virginia.
I still own a 2000 DRZ. It's been used 90% dirt. I concur Reliability and simplicity are its strength along with cost where weight is the trade-off. The front Suspension of the 2000 DRZ-S is different than later years it was upgraded to E suspension in 2002.
About to pick up a 2000 DRZ with 10k miles... anything to watch out for? Did you replace the cam chain tensioner? And how’s the front suspension feel?
@@LongIslandCQB The only mechanical work done to the bike was to re-jet the carb and put a smaller sprocket on the front when it was new. I wouldn't by a DRZ that has been significantly modified to produce more power. A 20$ voltage regulator was the only part that failed on the bike in 20 years. I have read about folks changing their cam chain tensioner to a manual one but I haven't had any issues or read about many actual failures but it might be a good upgrade just for the piece of mind. Don't let the bike sit for more than 4 weeks with ethanol gas in it or you might have to clean the jets in the carb, Good luck.
Great review!!
Im getting a 2021.
400s
I started watching and started recognizing the streets you were on. I'm right now the street in Portage lol
Nice Video. I would add the $25 Mad dog atv seat topper(Amazon) to your Seat Concepts . Makes a World of difference on long rides.
Thanks man! those look perfect, I'm definitely getting one
When you are bonbing through baby head rock trails . That extra weight helps. It's kind of a brute. Dirt bikes get thrown around to much on rocky trails. Sand and dirt, different story. I have owned a lot of bikes. Drz is a special bike.
Very nice machine 👌👌 I'm thinking of getting one. What bike is the front fender from? Because the original DRZ fender doesn't do it for me 😅
There is the DRZ400 kick start off road only and the E electric start Both these bikes have the Keihin carb and different cams stock 40hp, Kawasaki also had the same bike for a while the KLX400R !
Wow I wasn’t aware of all the differences with the dirt version, have you ridden one? I’m wondering how different it is to ride vs mine
@@troyhill1924 I have a 2003 KLX400R (DRZ400E) check out my You Tube channel
ua-cam.com/video/9UfTZziQxe8/v-deo.html
A very nice and honest video, thanks. I feel the same way about pretty much everything you talked about, only I bought a Kawasaki KLX230 which is a similar motorcycle but with less power. It just as enjoyable off road, though it lacks the speed on open roads. I noticed you were up at 80 mph quite easy, mine does that but at about 65 mph. I also have a Yamaha XJ900, but that one is so heavy I get sore muscles after a day of riding. These lighter "enduro" bikes are much more fun exploring nature and surroundings.
Thanks for the kind feedback man 👍 and yeah I like that it cruises on the highway like that although i find myself with it in the woods more than anything
Yes, well that's the thing with these type of off-road bikes. Because it is more fun in the woods, period. But that is just the beginning of what the bike will let you experience, with the right tires, and perhaps some soft pad on the seat, it will allow for longer trips. Because its reliability and ergonomic and effortless sitting position, it's the optimal vehicle for exploring and camping.
@@uncletom1971 I agree completely, that's why I'm so excited to have it cuz its the perfect exploration vehicle
@Davey Smith Hey Dave! Then you should do a short video about it later. I will do a few ones on mine as soon as the snow's gone here in Sweden. Although I am a total fanatic about my KLX230, I'm not a daredevil like Troy is ;)
The Kickstarter is the main thing that attracted me to a dirt bike as a kid.. and still think they should be optional. To put one on or whatever. Yeah I know some can be a pain to start but oh well. I'm looking to get a dual sport.. basically a dirt bike you can legally ride on the road! And it's just about that fun factor. I'll probably end up with a few..
Hell yea, awesome video man 🤘🏼
Glad you liked it man 👍
Love this review helped me out a lot bro
Love to hear it 👍
Excellent review. I also would like to take mine on the track....but that weight foretells of grievous single error trauma. Also, it doesn’t jump too well from what I’ve experienced, and jumping is half the fun. Would also love to try a Kim or beta.
yeah im really considering trying it on a track someday just for a laugh, im looking into getting a dedicated mx bike as well this spring so I can see what the difference is like, someday I hope to get a husky but for now they're out of my price range
Take out the baffle out of the exhaust. Sounds awesome, and it works well with the 3x3 intake mod with the JD get kit. Plenty of power. Fantastic torque. This platform is hard to beat. Even with it's faults.
Great review really enjoyed it
Good video the bike is more capable than I thought
Excellent video.
Now im Digging the wheels
🤔.
Mine are black.
Hey, from watching your video, I see we are from the same town. Where do you ride around here?
Great review, the front fender doesn't look stock, if that's the case, do you know what fender it is? Looks good.
Thanks! And yeah it’s not stock, it’s the polisport free flow fender
High Troy, thanks for this great review. You mentioned that you went tubeless. What modifications did you do to make the wheels tubeless? Thanks
So I bought the tubliss system and took it to a dealer and they did it all for me, I’ve seen some vids on how to do it and it looks like a real bad time doing it yourself lol
I have 2 DRZ's. A 01E 450 Yoshi race version and an 03 S model with many mods. My race bike is 55hp and can do 120 mph, so many mods. My S has many mods with about 40hp and just basic mods. I love my DRZ's.
I geared down my 03 E , 13 /49 sprockets, wow whole new machine, acceleration is awesome, nice and low gearing for tight trails , not getting on the clutch all the time.
The DRZ is a compromise bike, will do about anything you'd want but not as well as a full on dirt bike or a full on street bike and it is very reliable.
Bikes like the KTM and Beta are full on dirt bikes with a license plate, a whole different class than the DRZ and WR.
I've got the bug now, the next bike I get I wanna get something more dirt focused for sure
I have owned atm. Great bike's. I moved to a very remote part of the country. Can't trust a ktm. Plus, I use this bike as a every day commuter. Carb and five speed. Still love it. Aways gets me home.
Just bought one, the PO put supermoto wheels(17" front and back) and street tires on it. It's really fun on the road. Haven't put the dirt wheels on it yet, probably will wait until spring. The SM wheel has a bigger brake rotor, that could put you over the bars if you're not careful. Really has some bite.
Did you have to do anything special to get tubeless tires on the wheels?
and offroad that strong front brake would likely make the front tire wash out if applied too vigorously lol so as far as the tubeless, I bought the Tubliss system for my wheel sizes and then took them to a shop nearby that had previously installed them for others people. There are UA-cam videos of how to install them but I didn't wanna deal with the hassle. They're a game changer for offroad grip, especially here where it's quite muddy.
I have a f800gsa but want to do more offroad. Ive taken the gs onto some offroad but its heavy lol. Thinking of selling it and buying a DR650. 100lbs lighter.
The only thing I am hesitant on about getting the drz... seat height... im average height but I want this as a computer/ explorer bike (will be my only bike)... I just want the freedom to hit a trail if I see one that I want to explore. Plenty of stop lights in my bikes future.. I don't want to drop it in traffic is my only concern.. people don't pay attention and don't want to get run over if I drop the dang thing lol
How tall are you? I’m 5’9” and have no issues
@@troyhill1924 in 5'7 lol.. alright I'm sold
@@austinvickymoore3656 okay well I’d suggest a few tips: first, when you come to a stop you may have to shift yourself to the side that you’re putting the foot down so don’t expect to be able to sit completely normal when you come to a stop, also I’d say to replace the stock seat pad with a lower one, that might help a bit. I had some slight issues with the height when I first took it offroad but Ive gotten pretty used to it now, try to ride one and see how it feels for you
Looking to get another one, sorry I sold my 2011.
Where did you buy that throttle tube to shorten the stroke?
Don't forget if you do the 3x3 mod make sure you jet it
Is 10k miles anything to be afraid of?
I found a good price on a used one with all the good upgrades minus exhaust and seat
I love Suzuki and your bike also .. which country bro this is?
Thanks man, I live in the United States
@@troyhill1924 sir I'm from india
Awesome video,great job
Based on the upgrades you recommend, tires, seat, exhaust, bars, lighting, skid plate, air box, throttle tube- you’re looking at $1500-2500. If you added this to the price of a new model, could you get something comparable without having to do all the replacing? It just seems like a lot and you’re still dealing with a 5 sp and a carb. I just bought a DRZ so I’m curious. We still have snow so I haven’t had a chance to get used to it.
I’m sure you could find something else out there but when I was getting a bike I saw nothing comparable for the price, I’d say all of those upgrades are only necessary if you’re wanting to hit some hard trails, otherwise not really necessary. If you’re gonna hit mud the stock tires are trash btw lol
@@troyhill1924 thanks- I appreciate the response. Great videos BTW. The one with your dad on the CRF was great. I hope I’m riding like that with my son in a few years.
Great review, I have had numerous DRZs over the years, and have one now. Also a KTM500 which is quite a machine but still love the Z as its so smooth and comfortable.
Good stuff, it’s a very versatile bike, I just wish it was lighter.
noob here. can you fit bigger wheels on the SM version?
So since this "pig-beast" has been around for so long it must have a decent after-market parts list available? I see the skid-plate
& I'm hearing you on buying used models, of the 3 you chose this one for better prices than the other 2 you compared. I'm on
that same train as you, I do believe? I'm looking hard man, I kinda like this one & unlike the 200-300cc dualsports I know I
can't grow out of this bike at my age. peace
You answered my parts questions.... thanxx
Don't know why they do those? The rear fender is to keep dirt, water from the rear tire from ending up on your back.
Hey idiot, I was talking about the stock rear plate mount/rear light setup. Not the fender
I've got tubliss front and rear on my beta 2t and love them. But I'm always on single-track, mostly 2nd and 3rd gear stuff. Hardly ever go over 40mph. Not sure I'd wanna be doing 80 on the highway with 'em tho. Just sayin.
I believe it comes with renthol bars stock
Why do people always mention the weight for the DRZ400S? 320lbs is really nothing at all.. Most adventure style dual sports are well over 400lbs. I’m 6’3” 200lbs and have zero issues throwing mine around it’s so much lighter than most all other bikes I’ve ever owned or ridden in this category. Obviously heavy compared to a full on dirt bike
One of the best vids on utube. Love ya bro.
However.... to be fair... A somewhat maintained ktm 2 or 4stroke... is going to eat your bikes lunch, take it to town and then see how much money it can get for it. No disrespct.lol but no joke... love ya, good vid
lol I know, my dream is to get a 2 stroke husky someday, love the way they look, the lighter weight and the power will be beautiful im sure
Very impressive machine.
Don't do the tail tidy unless you want mud all over your back
Yeah tbh
Have you got a link to the throttle tube you replaced the original with?
I can’t seem to find any in stock right now but the name was the Zeta aluminum quick throttle tube
Thanks!
I am looking to get one. I would like to be able to quick convert from dual sport to supermoto and back depending on if I want to ride street or dirt.
This is what I think is needed so far.
1. Two sets of wheels. One for dirt and one for street
2. Adjust the shocks
Is there anything else I might need to set up a quick conversion?
Excellent therapy.
Sounds like it's adding a bit high?
Does it (or the SM model) have any technology in it like: abs, traction control, riding modes?
I mean it's gotta have something, for a 20 year old design.
Also, are the suspension adjustable? Damping, compression, rebound et al. Front and back?
Nope no tech and still has a carb lol can you believe they sell it like that still? Crazy. But the suspension is all adjustable front and back and I think it has been for a bit
KTM's are nice, but if you drop it like you drop a DRZ you're gonna have a bad time
I dropped my ktm 1290.......couldn’t lift it.....first bike ever, I couldn’t......need 3 people....get a bike you can pick up in the dirt. It is never level, it is never dry, it is never not cold...you are never not tired....
How is it that you have a kick starter on your 2013? My 2015 is electric start only.
Guy who owned it before me put a kick starter on it, it’s kinda cool cuz I have both electric and kickstart with it
Water cooled or air and oil cooled?
Where did you find it? I can't find any for sale anywhere
I got mine on Facebook marketplace, I had to drive 3 hours away to get it
@@troyhill1924 I'll try looking there. Thanks!

Great video and fantastic review! I agree 100% with everything you said and that's exactly how I feel. Except, a dislike for the 2 F bombs... :-( Another great and necessary mod are case guards.
What sprocket.?
Youv made a great choice because the wr250r the ass end will bounce you right off the bike head first it should be a safety hazard
Honestly the more I own this bike the more I love it, I love the fact that it’s been around so long cuz you can find an answer to any problem with it on forums or UA-cam

Top Speed ?
And miles on tank of gas ?
I talked about top speed in the video, Ive gotten it to about 95 with stock gearing, miles per tank varies on rider weight but I usually get about 60-120 miles depending on the type of riding I do. When im doing majority off-road riding the mileage goes way down
