Since Fallout 3, every single installment of the Fallout Franchise has included mysterious references to strange, Lovecraftian entities hiding behind the world's curtains. Fallout 4 continued the mystery and now Fallout 76 is expanding upon the bizarre Dunwich company's objectives in the most insightful way yet.

YOU FORGOT THE IT'S
Imagine being such a prolific lore channel the devs give you an easter egg! That's dope.
I only remember another instance of that: The Poppy Playtime devs giving MatPat their goodbyes;

On the topic of red water
Blood Falls was discovered in 1911 and has been red since then, so it's not out of bounds of possibility that some cave has had red water for 25 years even if unlikely.
The reveal at the end of the video (won't spoil it here but if you watch the video you know what I'm talking about) was FUCKING NUTS. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID THAT. HOLY HELL
RIGHT????? I NEVER expected Bethesda to actually reference Nate and his videos about Dunwich in-game! This is actually dope as hell
Nice
@@FourByteBurger Don't spoil it!
@@darkbooger Don't read comments before finishing the video!
@@FourByteBurger I read through the comments after watching the video
Okay, I was not ready for that ending.
With how extensive and creative your work is, I wouldn't be surprised if the developers watch your videos to give themselves a recap on their own material.
That ending made me smile. Your followers are with you, Nate!
When reading this, i imagine a dev sitting in a dark room, being like: "how can i further this mystery?"
And then watching a Nate video and being like: "oh, i didn't think about that, it's canon now!"
Honestly, i think that is how a lot of Developers come up with continuations of mysteries, they just read, or watch fan theories.
Heres some things you missed:
Fallout 76 has another "Interloper" / person turning into tree, that is way smaller and located underneath the Whitesprings resort near the Chinese Base
Tanagra Town (A few houses that seemingly were raised from the ground by roots) has a cavern system with a Metal Head at the bottom
The Enclave Oil Rig was decorated with the Heads (so its fair to assume they were involved atleast somewhat)
He has mentioned these in previous videos, and the second "Interloper" is actually called the Visitor according to the files. It is also dead and doesn't move, compared to the interloper, who moves.
Oxhorn covers this topic really well. I usually watch his stuff, just stumbled across this Nate fellow.
The heads are also seen pretty often on buildings around boston.
I think there was a shift in the meaning behind the metal heads between the classic games and the Bethesda games. The heads seem to be more involved with the American government at large. (EX: the ungodly amount of them in the capital), Bethesda thought they looked creepy, and it's snowballed into the whole eldritch mystery we have today. I think some of the more recent level designers for the expeditions seem to be more of a fan of the classic games to some extent. Since the areas are a lot more similar in design and aesthetic to those games.
Finding Kremvhs tooth for the first time is a sick experience
RIGHT!?! Before I knew to check every corner and just happened to dive down there. All at once you get the sense of "oh crap, this game is more interesting than I could possibly have imagined!"
Now if only the load times weren't obscene.
@@madwilliamflint what load times?
@@BxBxProductions Zoning in to the world from an instance. Even a decade later on a screaming fast gaming machine it's almost "literally unplayable."
@@madwilliamflintIdk man, that seems to be a problem on your end. Even on a mid range pc with a ton of mods, load times are pretty quick for me.
@@madwilliamflint i'm sure your pc isn't as fast as you think it is. what influences loading times the most on modern hardware is hard disk bandwidth and latency so if you've only been upgrading the more exciting parts and neglecting that there's your problem.

Just a thought as it wasnt brought up, im sure its mentioned that the grove where you find Harold actually grew up around him, like his presence encourged the growth so to speak. Considering the plant connection with these "other beings" it seems interesting that fallout 76 has such lush nature in the places where the cultists flock and regularly practice their rites.
Its basically causing the area to be terraformed with the growth of plants. The climate will change and the soil too. Could ready it for something else.
The trees around Harold quite literally grow from him. He says Bob releases seeds occasionally.
@@flashpone7910 Mhm. Could be to terraform, create new forests with new forms of life. Still with radiation but in a sense "heal" the ecosystem. Maybe prepare it for a different species.
There is a vault that had its GECK sploded. That caused the lush plant mutation and growth outside the vault into the mire.
It's been some time since I played Fallout 1 and 2, but didn't Harold end up with a seed that managed to start growing in his flesh and he just didn't want to remove it? Even gave it a name and everything back when it was just a tiny sapling. Not really something Lovecraftian. Don't think it's connected in any way.
38:00 -- I was about to say, out loud to myself, ". . .huh. Kind of reminds me of poor Harold."
The letter at the end actually gave me chills. How meta are we going to get?

I expect the level designer was delighted you found the ref so quickly.
The next step is to put something in there for the Data Miners to find.
They will bring it to Nate and....
If they start talking about CHIM I'm leaving.
As a West Virginian I can confirm there are indeed strange things in the woods.
They are called distant cousins.

The amount of toll roads alone in WV are terrifying enough. 😅😅 But in all seriousness, it is a beautiful place.
They are called west Virginians
I live right on the VA WVA border and can confirm Appalachia is a high activity region especially the West Virginia portion
Dunwich will always be my favorite Fallout mystery. I remember my first time coming across the Dunwich Quarry and after the flashback scenes i came across your vids while trying to find an answer on what happened there. Ive been hooked ever since. Great vid as always Nate ❤
Honestly surprised you didn't mention Tanagra Town from 76. Not only is it an entire town lifted into the sky by vines (another plant connection) The cave at it's center inexplicably contains another one of those giant Art Deco heads.
Came to comment this very thing, not gunna lie
He talks about it in the previous video he mentioned at the beginning of this one actually! TLDR: He theorizes that maybe whatever entity is behind a lot of the stuff going on took control of the surrounding plant life to raise the town into the sky. It's a great video if you have the time to watch it!
Tanagra Town was thoroughly covered in a previous video (:
I'm wondering if "Tanagra Town" might be a reference to an old ST:TNG episode called "Darmok" where the alien captain says: "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"

Fun Fact! There's a glacier runoff in Antarctica that's blood red due to a pocket of Extremophilic bacteria being released as the ice melts! Its been going on for quite awhile and is horrifying to look at!
I thought it was red because of the rust. The microorganisms are feeding off of the oxygen released from the rust.

I was stuck at work with a very busy night. Just kept in mind that this was waiting for me and it made my day so much better.
You are literally my one and only source for everything Elder Scrolls and Fallout related. Thank you so much. It's always a blast!!!!
The room with an obilisk, body and TWO monoliths, seems heavy handed as hell. Like "LOOK OVER HERE A BIG OL ROOM WITH EVERYTHING"
As soon as you started talking about the "weirdly humanoid creature seems to be a person turning into a plant" I immediately thought of Harold and his sad story.
We will never have another character quite like Harold. What a legend
Not only Harold, but the Spore Carriers from Fallout: New Vegas... That's what these plant creatures remind me mostly of.
Harold honestly got it easy. He's turning into a forest, an interconnected system like the Master, if you don't kill him and he has a group of people worshipping him he can talk to even though he's stuck in one place.
As @madcatusa said, the spore carriers had it far worse.
Lorenzo's helmet seems almost Dwarven. And the head statues are reminiscent of the busts we see all over dwemer ruins. I have always wondered, could the civilization Lorenzo found be the descendants of a dimensionally shifted Dwemer?
It would explain the Nurnroot on the Pridewin.
the art deco stuff is from fo1
Best fan theory of 2024.
Doesnt explain the evil things... unless the Daedra was able to utilize Dwarven metal as a medium.
The Dwemer most likely became the skin of Anumidium
With the emphasis placed on "plant people", I'm surprised at no mention of Vault 22s Spore Carriers in NV.
Man's made it into the franchise, mad congrats! Side note, theres also the spore/plant people of vault 22 from NV to add to the list of flora-peeps. Mad props again 🎉
20:45 By far the creepiest element of this story is a paper note surviving untouched and unscathed over the great war and flowing years, just laying ona picnic table outside exposed to the elements.
@@Nuniixookay, let's just discredit the scenes of environmental story telling with no notes in sight in FO3&4
Honestly if you pay attention to detail like that you’ll never enjoy Bethesda games. For example the skeletons posed perfectly all over the map despite the fact they should have fallen into piles long ago.
@@mikoto7693Not to mention the dead bodies that have supposedly been there for years that still look fresh as the day they were killed. Which is why suspension of disbelief is a good thing to have playing fallout.
@@Nuniixo God you guys are so pathetic, are you seriously using that to hate Bethesda, really. Again pathetic.

Hey nate, it's guys here. Can you look into "Nothing" in Fallout? In Fallout 4's far harbor the children of atom send you to take care of a heretic and she is screaming something like "nothing is real". And yesterday I was playing 76 and inside fort defiance (an old asylum) there's a room with a headless skeleton with big red words on the wall that say "Nothing is real". Is Bethesda referencing something?
im the co-writer, we are covering this when we cover the pylons. good taste. look up pylon v-13 on the fandom wiki. there's also another Nothing altar at a pylon in the ash heap.
also note the active quantum inverter at vault 96. further this is kinda the main theme of Night of the Moth

Was just looking through this channel to see if a new video was up a few days ago, thanks nate!! :)
The Lucky Hole Mine monster is called the Interloper. There is another smaller one called the Visitor down in an area called The Deep.
Nate is like that friend that you don’t talk to all the time but every time you see him it’s like you pick up right where you left off. Love the lore videos Nate can’t wait for the next video and this one is just getting started
@TheEpicNate315: In the swamp area of FO76, you will find trees with some of the same tentacle-like vines. One of the tree has a piece of the same statue in the middle of it.
Ayyyy! My man, that’s so cool. Clearly, you’re on the right track. Have enjoyed tracking along with these in-depth videos, great job!
“Don’t leave me in this place.”
76 MC: “And so I left him there.”
Whilst it doesn't change anything, I found it interesting that the note that led the cultists to the mine specifically states that only ONE of them could hear the voice - which is VERY similar to other instances with Dunwich locations and individuals being led to certain locations - combine that with the test server note reveal, and it makes me really think that the Dunwich cultists thought they were in charge, but the higher power was acting as it pleased, regardless of their efforts.
I wonder why there isn't a video on the similarities
I just finished your first video and this came up after. Didn't expect to start my morning with 2.5 hours of fallout videos lol
I hope they put in more easter eggs like the note at the end. That was great!
The responders direct you to the organ cave to collect relics from the cultists. But no more lore is added
Also, the well on my property is a dried blood brown due to iron xoide and Sulphur compounds from natural strings and has been that way for 30+ years.
correct! good catch
-Anachorite
The organ cave is apart of a daily quest called a Better Tomorrow. It doesn’t always pop up to go to the organ cave but when you do you have to get certain “artifacts” from the cave and deliver them to Lane, the quest giver.

Probably already been said. The thing skeleton in the maw is a humpback whale (maybe with some artistic license). The "tusks" are the lower jaw that has split, this is a common mistake even made in real life when whale carcasses wash up. So it is most like a reused asset from far harbour. Though in game i doubt that's what they intend it represent.
Kos?
@danielled8665 ehh. KOS is more human and jelly fish, but elderitch cosmic horror does goes hand in hand with deep sea monstrosities.
Could be any kind of small baleen whale really
@MrAnarchronism yeah, but as it was a reused asset it could be there to represent that sort of entity.
@FuzorFishbug never thought about it, but yeah, I guess all filter feeding whales would have a similar jaw structure.
I see Nate post Dunwich mysteries, I scramble to watch it
And realised that he knew too much🎉
nate is dunwich monster revealed
This has likely been mentioned but I'm surprised the other large plant-like creature laying seemingly dead on the floor of a hidden cavern inside The Deep below The Whitespring Resort in 76 wasn't mentioned at all. It uses a different model than the creature in the Lucky Hole Mine but the two do feel connected. It's also interesting that the one in The Deep is called The Visitor while the one in The Lucky Hole Mine is called The Interloper, it almost sounds as if the one in The Deep was a welcomed guest while the one in the mine was not.
Easter egg from the fallout show, in the final episode when the father puts in the code into the terminal, the code represents interplays fallout 1 with the the last digits being 97 in reference to its 1997 release and the first 3 digits being 101, a reference to vault 101 in bethesdas first fallout title 👍
Sure it wasn't 10/10/97? That was Fallout: A Post Apocalyptic Nuclear Role-Playing Game's original release date.

I really hope this actually is an easter egg and reference to the biggest loremaster of Bethesda games, especially on the topic of Dunwich and Ugg-Qualtoth. Finding that must have been an utterly chilling experience.😮
All this stuff just tells me that there are still people with passion that have some influence at Bethesda, that people who still care are able to push little bits of genuine effort and talent into this setting. Perhaps hope exists still, or perhaps I'm just a wishful thinker.
If you actually ever play F76 there's a lot of love in it, it's clear to me the devs have always loved it and tried really hard to make something good. It's a shame the launch wasn't great but there is and was TONS of lore, and all the locations are almost all real places, for example, Helvetia, Pumpkin House, Palace of Winding Path, Morgantown, VTU, Whitesprings, which is based on a real US place in West Virginia called the Greenbrier, which IRL has a bunker underneath. They put a bunker underneath it in Fallout 76 too. There's more. It's more than abundant to me that the devs sat there and tried to make a rich map and they obviously still care with the inclusion of stuff like Organ Cave which is pretty recent. So they never really lost the passion, honestly. I would say that 76 is definitely a labor of love. Yeah they have the cash shop but you don't have to look at that stuff and it's all cosmetic. You can instead pick a section of the map and just fall down into a quest rabbit hole (Order of Mysteries is a fun one). Etc etc. It's a worthwhile game in my opinion.
@NinjaDimes From what Ive seen, it's mostly been the higher ups directing the developers to do the stuff people haven't like. For example the devs all though having no NPCs was a bad idea but weren't allowed to do otherwise.
@@NinjaDimes I wish that were true about it being a labor of love. But you are forced to look at the cash shop items all the time as part of the issue with 76 is that it is multiplayer and you have random instanced players with bases filled with that store junk riddled all throughout the map. In addition the repetitive missions and always annoying nukes being set off (which is super non-cannonical) hurt the immersion. I think of it as a game which you could love but for its faults caused by the developer itself. It is filled with random advertisements by way of crap fortnight adjacent emotes and cash shop cosmetics and 4th wall breaking moments which makes it hard to stay immersed (the main reason most players engage with the series of games). I tried it and disliked it even years after launch because of all this. Being able to experience the writing and environmental could help if they did not paywall a private server (offline) option as that would solve most of these issues. I wanted to love it, but just could not. I would say all this lore you have to try to hard to reach to make it worth it with all that crap in between, like reading Steven King's IT, but with magazine adverts every 6th page and Better Health non-skippable video ad rolls.
They need a better game engine for sure. Ppl want modern mechanics and animations. Stanfield proved ppl don't want loading screens in the year of the lord 2024
@@NinjaDimesI just don’t like how much it fucks with lore

Regarding the blood red river in Organ Cave, there is a real-world example of it called Blood Falls in Antarctica that has been flowing since, at least, its discovery in 1911.
So, for the blood river to flow for 25 years is rare, but not impossible or otherworldly.
(Althoughhhhh, Lovecraft did write about eldrich horrors within Antarctica, and warned us to stay away ['At the Mountains of Madness' published 1931].
So, maybe, there is a connection. 🤔

The Kaddath-Leng mountains touch several places and times on our world from the Dreamlands including Antartica not far from the Old Ones city.
Aw that ending, is it true? are you getting recognized by Bethesda? A truly amazing work having an impact to the game they record for would be amazing
Nate, this is the third time you’ve shown us Fallout’s Dunwich mystery getting bigger this week.
Those whale skeletons might be the same ones from Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC? It looks like you can find them near the Nakano residence, and they also make an appearance in a few locations on the Far Harbor island.
That ending is very cool. It’s always interesting when developers put things regarding influential content creators in the game. Whether or not it’s simply a nod that Nate’s on the right track or that something more may happen in the future is up for debate.
Who knows, maybe Nate himself may soon find himself ensnared in the planty hands of the eldritch horrors. :O
It would be cool if Nate became an npc during the map expansion which sends you to get eldritch artifacts, and is researching the mothman culitists.

I don't know if you're going to see this, but your retelling of the Fallout RPG storyline was so good that it turned into the core storyline of the Pathfinder game I'm playing in right now. I loved the video so much that I sent it to the guy who's GMing the game during a space of time between when he'd finalized the game's setting (a steampunk Mad Max world) and started running the actual sessions. More than half a year later, I've realized that we're playing a modified version of the story that you told. I still haven't told him that I've made the connection because I'm afraid if he knows I know he'll change what's going to happen and I really want to know where it's going.
