He has mentioned these in previous videos, and the second "Interloper" is actually called the Visitor according to the files. It is also dead and doesn't move, compared to the interloper, who moves.
I think there was a shift in the meaning behind the metal heads between the classic games and the Bethesda games. The heads seem to be more involved with the American government at large. (EX: the ungodly amount of them in the capital), Bethesda thought they looked creepy, and it's snowballed into the whole eldritch mystery we have today. I think some of the more recent level designers for the expeditions seem to be more of a fan of the classic games to some extent. Since the areas are a lot more similar in design and aesthetic to those games.
Dunwich will always be my favorite Fallout mystery. I remember my first time coming across the Dunwich Quarry and after the flashback scenes i came across your vids while trying to find an answer on what happened there. Ive been hooked ever since. Great vid as always Nate ❤

It's been some time since I played Fallout 1 and 2, but didn't Harold end up with a seed that managed to start growing in his flesh and he just didn't want to remove it? Even gave it a name and everything back when it was just a tiny sapling. Not really something Lovecraftian. Don't think it's connected in any way.
Nate could've made a three minute video saying "holy crap i was referenced in fallout" but instead he made an hour long video only to throw that last note at us like a brick to the face
Nate is like that friend that you don’t talk to all the time but every time you see him it’s like you pick up right where you left off. Love the lore videos Nate can’t wait for the next video and this one is just getting started
Fun Fact! There's a glacier runoff in Antarctica that's blood red due to a pocket of Extremophilic bacteria being released as the ice melts! Its been going on for quite awhile and is horrifying to look at!
As soon as you started talking about the "weirdly humanoid creature seems to be a person turning into a plant" I immediately thought of Harold and his sad story.
Harold honestly got it easy. He's turning into a forest, an interconnected system like the Master, if you don't kill him and he has a group of people worshipping him he can talk to even though he's stuck in one place. As @madcatusa said, the spore carriers had it far worse.
Honestly surprised you didn't mention Tanagra Town from 76. Not only is it an entire town lifted into the sky by vines (another plant connection) The cave at it's center inexplicably contains another one of those giant Art Deco heads.
He talks about it in the previous video he mentioned at the beginning of this one actually! TLDR: He theorizes that maybe whatever entity is behind a lot of the stuff going on took control of the surrounding plant life to raise the town into the sky. It's a great video if you have the time to watch it!
I'm wondering if "Tanagra Town" might be a reference to an old ST:TNG episode called "Darmok" where the alien captain says: "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"
20:45 By far the creepiest element of this story is a paper note surviving untouched and unscathed over the great war and flowing years, just laying ona picnic table outside exposed to the elements.
Honestly if you pay attention to detail like that you’ll never enjoy Bethesda games. For example the skeletons posed perfectly all over the map despite the fact they should have fallen into piles long ago.
@@mikoto7693Not to mention the dead bodies that have supposedly been there for years that still look fresh as the day they were killed. Which is why suspension of disbelief is a good thing to have playing fallout.
These videos have us on the edge of our seats. There has to be more you have to keep going. This series of the “iceberg” and Dunwich and what not is so interesting. Cannot wait until we have the complete series
Easter egg from the fallout show, in the final episode when the father puts in the code into the terminal, the code represents interplays fallout 1 with the the last digits being 97 in reference to its 1997 release and the first 3 digits being 101, a reference to vault 101 in bethesdas first fallout title 👍
Lorenzo's helmet seems almost Dwarven. And the head statues are reminiscent of the busts we see all over dwemer ruins. I have always wondered, could the civilization Lorenzo found be the descendants of a dimensionally shifted Dwemer?
Hey nate, it's guys here. Can you look into "Nothing" in Fallout? In Fallout 4's far harbor the children of atom send you to take care of a heretic and she is screaming something like "nothing is real". And yesterday I was playing 76 and inside fort defiance (an old asylum) there's a room with a headless skeleton with big red words on the wall that say "Nothing is real". Is Bethesda referencing something?
im the co-writer, we are covering this when we cover the pylons. good taste. look up pylon v-13 on the fandom wiki. there's also another Nothing altar at a pylon in the ash heap.
Whilst it doesn't change anything, I found it interesting that the note that led the cultists to the mine specifically states that only ONE of them could hear the voice - which is VERY similar to other instances with Dunwich locations and individuals being led to certain locations - combine that with the test server note reveal, and it makes me really think that the Dunwich cultists thought they were in charge, but the higher power was acting as it pleased, regardless of their efforts.
Does anyone else get a super calming feeling when watching Nate's videos? Idk why but the moment he starts the intro I just get so calm. I think I've watched every Fallout and Skyrim video at least 2x each and I'm rewatching them again now because I never remember all the details and like to hear them again and its comforting to be told to open a Nuka Quantum and sit back and relax XD
Probably already been said. The thing skeleton in the maw is a humpback whale (maybe with some artistic license). The "tusks" are the lower jaw that has split, this is a common mistake even made in real life when whale carcasses wash up. So it is most like a reused asset from far harbour. Though in game i doubt that's what they intend it represent.
The organ cave is apart of a daily quest called a Better Tomorrow. It doesn’t always pop up to go to the organ cave but when you do you have to get certain “artifacts” from the cave and deliver them to Lane, the quest giver.
I miss your videos. Listening to you talk about the lore of some of my favorite games is something special especially when I'm playing those games while I listen. Definitely need more content from you Nate.
This is getting so META, amazing videos, great to se them having an impact on the game, hopefully they expand on it even more, maybe so me direct quests
Nate has been a calming backdrop to some of my worst moments. Incredible how his passion for the stuff we're passionate about can be uplifting. Such a good person too.
The last letter WHAT. WHO. I really hope this actually is an easter egg and reference to the biggest loremaster of Bethesda games, especially on the topic of Dunwich and Ugg-Qualtoth. Finding that must have been an utterly chilling experience.😮
The devs must really be grateful to Nate for putting together a bunch of random assets and giving them the opportunity to make something interesting with the lore he created for them 😂
My favourite conspiracy in Fallout, one that I’m a huge fan of. Thank you Nate for sharing this, the Dunwich horrors are certainly a must know for lore enthusiasts!
All this stuff just tells me that there are still people with passion that have some influence at Bethesda, that people who still care are able to push little bits of genuine effort and talent into this setting. Perhaps hope exists still, or perhaps I'm just a wishful thinker.
If you actually ever play F76 there's a lot of love in it, it's clear to me the devs have always loved it and tried really hard to make something good. It's a shame the launch wasn't great but there is and was TONS of lore, and all the locations are almost all real places, for example, Helvetia, Pumpkin House, Palace of Winding Path, Morgantown, VTU, Whitesprings, which is based on a real US place in West Virginia called the Greenbrier, which IRL has a bunker underneath. They put a bunker underneath it in Fallout 76 too. There's more. It's more than abundant to me that the devs sat there and tried to make a rich map and they obviously still care with the inclusion of stuff like Organ Cave which is pretty recent. So they never really lost the passion, honestly. I would say that 76 is definitely a labor of love. Yeah they have the cash shop but you don't have to look at that stuff and it's all cosmetic. You can instead pick a section of the map and just fall down into a quest rabbit hole (Order of Mysteries is a fun one). Etc etc. It's a worthwhile game in my opinion.
@NinjaDimes From what Ive seen, it's mostly been the higher ups directing the developers to do the stuff people haven't like. For example the devs all though having no NPCs was a bad idea but weren't allowed to do otherwise.
@@NinjaDimes I wish that were true about it being a labor of love. But you are forced to look at the cash shop items all the time as part of the issue with 76 is that it is multiplayer and you have random instanced players with bases filled with that store junk riddled all throughout the map. In addition the repetitive missions and always annoying nukes being set off (which is super non-cannonical) hurt the immersion. I think of it as a game which you could love but for its faults caused by the developer itself. It is filled with random advertisements by way of crap fortnight adjacent emotes and cash shop cosmetics and 4th wall breaking moments which makes it hard to stay immersed (the main reason most players engage with the series of games). I tried it and disliked it even years after launch because of all this. Being able to experience the writing and environmental could help if they did not paywall a private server (offline) option as that would solve most of these issues. I wanted to love it, but just could not. I would say all this lore you have to try to hard to reach to make it worth it with all that crap in between, like reading Steven King's IT, but with magazine adverts every 6th page and Better Health non-skippable video ad rolls.
They need a better game engine for sure. Ppl want modern mechanics and animations. Stanfield proved ppl don't want loading screens in the year of the lord 2024
Man, I have never been this early to Epic Nate video before. To mark the occasion, I rewatched the other two Dunwich videos. I'm glad you are still making these, my man. They are so entertaining and interesting. It crazy how much lore this universe has and how connected everything is if you look hard enough.
I just had a car wreck, and my elbow was shattered for arm fractured, and my eyeball was cut with glass. After 2 surgeries, I woke up to this video on my top of notifications, and it was such a moral boost. Thank you, epicnate you help in ways you'll never know.
This has likely been mentioned but I'm surprised the other large plant-like creature laying seemingly dead on the floor of a hidden cavern inside The Deep below The Whitespring Resort in 76 wasn't mentioned at all. It uses a different model than the creature in the Lucky Hole Mine but the two do feel connected. It's also interesting that the one in The Deep is called The Visitor while the one in The Lucky Hole Mine is called The Interloper, it almost sounds as if the one in The Deep was a welcomed guest while the one in the mine was not.
It probably doesn’t tie into the Lovecraft story too much but another Plant People mutation we see in Fallout are the Spore creatures from Fallout New Vegas and the Big MT
I don't recall where I was in FO76, somewhere in the swampy areas in the east, but there was the clown painting with chalk writing beside it too in like a shanty tree house style shelter
I remember binge watching the channel a few years ago when i was obsessed with Fallout 4. With the release of the fallout tv trailer im getting recommended all the fallout youtubers again. Brought back some good memories
I don't know if you're going to see this, but your retelling of the Fallout RPG storyline was so good that it turned into the core storyline of the Pathfinder game I'm playing in right now. I loved the video so much that I sent it to the guy who's GMing the game during a space of time between when he'd finalized the game's setting (a steampunk Mad Max world) and started running the actual sessions. More than half a year later, I've realized that we're playing a modified version of the story that you told. I still haven't told him that I've made the connection because I'm afraid if he knows I know he'll change what's going to happen and I really want to know where it's going.
That ending is very cool. It’s always interesting when developers put things regarding influential content creators in the game. Whether or not it’s simply a nod that Nate’s on the right track or that something more may happen in the future is up for debate. Who knows, maybe Nate himself may soon find himself ensnared in the planty hands of the eldritch horrors. :O
It would be cool if Nate became an npc during the map expansion which sends you to get eldritch artifacts, and is researching the mothman culitists. Edit: It was I
@TheEpicNate315: In the swamp area of FO76, you will find trees with some of the same tentacle-like vines. One of the tree has a piece of the same statue in the middle of it.
I love this type of content. Chilling ominous findings that you have to dig to find. No jump scares, no stupid psycho chasing you around. Just this chilling "FEELING" that something beyond our understanding is watching us. A Feeling that something horrible is going to happen. LOVE IT!
Is it just me, or do those metal faces look like the ones in Dwemer ruins? Also, does a whale skeleton in a pit remind anyone of Kagrenzel? What if TES and Fallout are in the same universe and the Dwemer drew some eldritch entity to Earth when they disappeared themselves?
It's a fun thought, but it doesn't really track. TES takes place in a world with a completely different cosmology and world-shape. The totally-not-Nirnroots in FO4 are just an Easter egg.
Man's made it into the franchise, mad congrats! Side note, theres also the spore/plant people of vault 22 from NV to add to the list of flora-peeps. Mad props again 🎉

Nate could've made a three minute video saying "holy crap i was referenced in fallout" but instead he made an hour long video only to throw that last note at us like a brick to the face
That’s amazing! Nate, you’re canon now in the Fallout lore!
As are all of his followers
We are canon 🎉🎉🎉
Oh cool. Nice.
Nate is the fallout 4 protag, but that seems highly targeted...
It is funny to think that both him and all of us are canon. Really weird to think about, cool though.
As a West Virginian I can confirm there are indeed strange things in the woods.
They are called distant cousins.
Isn't the term "distant relatives"?
The amount of toll roads alone in WV are terrifying enough. 😅😅 But in all seriousness, it is a beautiful place.
They are called west Virginians
I live right on the VA WVA border and can confirm Appalachia is a high activity region especially the West Virginia portion
Nate is like that friend that you don’t talk to all the time but every time you see him it’s like you pick up right where you left off. Love the lore videos Nate can’t wait for the next video and this one is just getting started
38:00 -- I was about to say, out loud to myself, ". . .huh. Kind of reminds me of poor Harold."
The room with an obilisk, body and TWO monoliths, seems heavy handed as hell. Like "LOOK OVER HERE A BIG OL ROOM WITH EVERYTHING"
We got futuristic technology, extraterrestrials, supernatural crythtids, ghosts, and now eldrich horrors
Man Fallout got it all in weird
That's not even looking at 1&2...
There's a reason for this franchise to be perfect XD
And my friends think I'm crazy for using a vampire mod

Fun Fact! There's a glacier runoff in Antarctica that's blood red due to a pocket of Extremophilic bacteria being released as the ice melts! Its been going on for quite awhile and is horrifying to look at!
I thought it was red because of the rust. The microorganisms are feeding off of the oxygen released from the rust.
Why do I imagine you saying “and it’s horrifying to look at!” with a big smile? lol
@@Nick-kw9ozIt is rust. What's funny of these little fellos is that they breath iron and excrete rust.

As soon as you started talking about the "weirdly humanoid creature seems to be a person turning into a plant" I immediately thought of Harold and his sad story.
We will never have another character quite like Harold. What a legend
Not only Harold, but the Spore Carriers from Fallout: New Vegas... That's what these plant creatures remind me mostly of.
Came to comment this very thing, not gunna lie
He talks about it in the previous video he mentioned at the beginning of this one actually! TLDR: He theorizes that maybe whatever entity is behind a lot of the stuff going on took control of the surrounding plant life to raise the town into the sky. It's a great video if you have the time to watch it!
Tanagra Town was thoroughly covered in a previous video (:
I'm wondering if "Tanagra Town" might be a reference to an old ST:TNG episode called "Darmok" where the alien captain says: "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra"
With the emphasis placed on "plant people", I'm surprised at no mention of Vault 22s Spore Carriers in NV.
The Lucky Hole Mine monster is called the Interloper. There is another smaller one called the Visitor down in an area called The Deep.
20:45 By far the creepiest element of this story is a paper note surviving untouched and unscathed over the great war and flowing years, just laying ona picnic table outside exposed to the elements.
@@Nuniixookay, let's just discredit the scenes of environmental story telling with no notes in sight in FO3&4

How relatable this is crazy.
Lorenzo's helmet seems almost Dwarven. And the head statues are reminiscent of the busts we see all over dwemer ruins. I have always wondered, could the civilization Lorenzo found be the descendants of a dimensionally shifted Dwemer?
It would explain the Nurnroot on the Pridewin.
the art deco stuff is from fo1
Best fan theory of 2024.

Is Bethesda referencing something?
im the co-writer, we are covering this when we cover the pylons. good taste. look up pylon v-13 on the fandom wiki. there's also another Nothing altar at a pylon in the ash heap.
also note the active quantum inverter at vault 96. further this is kinda the main theme of Night of the Moth
The heretic read in a textbook that the atom is mostly nothing.

“Don’t leave me in this place.”
76 MC: “And so I left him there.”
I wonder why there isn't a video on the similarities
Does anyone else get a super calming feeling when watching Nate's videos? Idk why but the moment he starts the intro I just get so calm. I think I've watched every Fallout and Skyrim video at least 2x each and I'm rewatching them again now because I never remember all the details and like to hear them again and its comforting to be told to open a Nuka Quantum and sit back and relax XD
I use his videos to go to sleep. I feel so comforted by him.

Congratulations Nate!!! you’re one of my favorite channels, i love your lore investigations. so awesome to see your dedication really pay off!!!
Kos?
@danielled8665 ehh. KOS is more human and jelly fish, but elderitch cosmic horror does goes hand in hand with deep sea monstrosities.
Could be any kind of small baleen whale really
@MrAnarchronism yeah, but as it was a reused asset it could be there to represent that sort of entity.
@FuzorFishbug never thought about it, but yeah, I guess all filter feeding whales would have a similar jaw structure.
The responders direct you to the organ cave to collect relics from the cultists. But no more lore is added
Also, the well on my property is a dried blood brown due to iron xoide and Sulphur compounds from natural strings and has been that way for 30+ years.
correct! good catch
-Anachorite
The organ cave is apart of a daily quest called a Better Tomorrow. It doesn’t always pop up to go to the organ cave but when you do you have to get certain “artifacts” from the cave and deliver them to Lane, the quest giver.
I guess I should have read through the comments before I posted this myself haha...

@@NinjaDimesI just don’t like how much it fucks with lore
All that vegetation relation, including literal plant people, and the last bit of Atlantic City is released just as it becomes SPRING? Interesting.
Man, I have never been this early to Epic Nate video before. To mark the occasion, I rewatched the other two Dunwich videos. I'm glad you are still making these, my man. They are so entertaining and interesting. It crazy how much lore this universe has and how connected everything is if you look hard enough.

That easter egg at the end went right over my head til someone pointed it out!!!

I hope they put in more easter eggs like the note at the end. That was great!
Nate, this is the third time you’ve shown us Fallout’s Dunwich mystery getting bigger this week.
Nate you need to put all your vids in Spotify as a podcast
Aw that ending, is it true? are you getting recognized by Bethesda? A truly amazing work having an impact to the game they record for would be amazing

You’ve become what MatPat is to FNAF. We’re proud of you.
The totally-not-Nirnroots in FO4 are just an Easter egg.
i think the elder scrolls comes after fallout, like couple thousand years later, but i agree
I've seen theories saying that fallout and elder scrolls are in different kalpas, can't remember where I saw it though
Man's made it into the franchise, mad congrats! Side note, theres also the spore/plant people of vault 22 from NV to add to the list of flora-peeps. Mad props again 🎉
That vault was super creepy, I remember it was a really far walk and it was too dangerous and scary to loot for long lol

Glad I found your channel. After years of eyeballing the Fallout franchise, and telling myself I'll get to it someday, the new series that was released gave me the perfect opportunity with all of the current discounted game sales. So far your videos have been an excellent external supplement and source of entertainment. Thanks for your work.
Worth noting that is in fact a whale skeleton, I believe a similar model is used in fo3 & 4.
Those are not tusks, their part of the jaw/skull structure.

I really see no connections here at all to Dunwich.
