Dr. Westman I too do not drive home initially the ketosis initially with my patients. I am an advocate of a strict Carnivore diet. But Carnivore is not necessarily a ketogenic diet. I find the person who takes the initiative to learn the pros & von, the pitfalls, the reality that there is no “bad” cholesterol and then experiments with the Csrnivore diet for at least a month never looks back. Once they are choose the better health I introduce checking ketones. For some getting in an out of ketosis is like a flip of the switch. For others it can take considerable time. I’m not a fan of those trying the diet looking to spice up the diet with carnivore breads, carnivore ice cream. They are pursuing the dopamine fix. I believe from repeated antidotal clinical experience that Carnivore is healing & ketosis brings even better outcomes. I believe 10-20 years from now that we will see a drastic change in nutrition that will destroy big pharma as we know it today. And that is a great thing. Kudos to you a healer not a legal drug pusher. Dr. Ginge.

After 4 strokes I went keto for cognitive impairment and have used a ketone / glucose meter to measure. The dawn effect kills my ketosis but a shot of C8 mct first thing morning gets me through the morning with good ketone levels, no appetite and a clear mind. I now eat carnivore due to plant intolerances and find that no longer measuring lowers anxiety probably due to fewer cortisol spikes, and thus I now go by what feels good rather than ketone measurements. Maintaining a strict keto diet keeps me feeling good mentally and physically.

If any future bone spurs develop, I’ve read that applying organic, hexene free, caster oil to the area, consistently over a period of time, will dissolve them. You can pour some on a cloth or bandage and then apply that to the skin above the affected area. Since caster oil is oily, you might want to use a material that has a waterproof backing such as a pad used for patients with incontinence and puppies.

Being Carnivore at 69, and since 67 years old and coming from 4 years keto, I do not worry about any disease. If it happens, so be it, my previous eating and lifestyle habits are more than likely to blame. But being Carnivore today, I believe, my life is on the right track and no way will I go back to addictive sugar and carbs. I do, do MCT oil everday and have for years. I think if you get off the carbs totally early enough, you can reverse damage to the brain and deter dementia.and other metabolic diseases.

@@philaisyou can consider using fermented foods, such as Kombucha drinks, kimchi & sauerkraut( with low sodium & no MSG in the fermented kimchi & fermented sauerkraut). Also, consider these proteolytic( also called,”systemic”) enzymes: serrapeptase &, esp., nattokinase, daily. Also consider taking, orally, Kyolic garlic, liquid or soft gel form, daily. See Dr. Ford Brewer UA-cam video(s) for info as to recommendations as to amts. of kimchi, natto(or its supplement form, nattokinase, & Kyolic garlic. These extra items complement a carnivore diet, I need to add, & good health. Just as adding fermented pickles and/or small amts. of pickle juice might be healthy for some people( not for diabetics, for ex.), because of the high sodium content. Each of the previous mentioned items, to be considered, may be highly controversial among medical/nutritional experts who advocate for the carnivore diet, as an elimination diet, or for the purpose of maintaining a healthy human diet, in general (& for prevention of conditions, afflictions, & diseases). So due diligence is required, for each individual, if you add ingredients to a strict carnivore diet. A blanket dietary formula for everyone is foolish, because of diversity of genetics, variation of exposure to environmental toxins, & different person’s different reactions to the same foods eaten. Due to a variety of different factors, an individualized approach to required nutrition should be taken, if one chooses to adopt other than a strict carnivore diet(there are several forms of carnivore diet, ie., lion diet, or inclusion of eggs & fish,& optional butter, even). View Dr. Chaffee’s UA-cam video, for his explanation of why extra vitamin& mineral supplementation is not required, generally, for anyone embarking on any of the forms of carnivore diet, available. He claims the carnivore diet supplies all the required nutrients a human body needs. The body will automatically adjust itself to healthy metabolic levels, if the carnivore diet is properly carried out & strictly adhered to! Surviving withdrawal symptoms is assured, but going through it without quitting & returning to the addictive behavior, is a living hell. Cure, contrary to what any 12 Step Program lies about, is possible for an individual. He or she has to quit, completely, all at once, & know that the cravings will be eliminated, in a short period of time, if you are determined to quit. You must quit completely, all at once, & go through the horrible psychological & physical withdrawal symptoms. Stay away from people & situations that you know are temptations to failure. You are most vulnerable to failure during this period, obviously. Take one day at a time, is a good attitude to take, however. Believe in yourself; that you can & will succeed.Confront your problem head on, having planned your course of action, realistically. That most people fail is true. Our child had enormous improvements in some areas - but of course we couldn't undo the brain damage so no improvement in gross motor dysfunction, all improvements were in reading, speaking, communicating and interaction and conversation etc. Just to clarify I do not have a my child on a keto diet, but a normal healthy fruit/vegetable intake but no junk food or any processed carbohydrate - nothing that isn't meat/fish/chicken/eggs/plant foods. Everything Westman talks about would be great if he just replaces his incorrect use of the word keto with low-carb. The same can be said about your use of the word keto. I agree that the goal of a "low carb" diet for weight loss is simply to lower glucose and insulin. There is no goal of a keto diet - people are either in ketosis or not. Ketosis and "keto" is not about the food that is eaten - it's a state of metabolism. Ketosis has no goals, it's a state of being. Ketones, readily produced by the liver, are required for humans from birth. Like oxygen.
The first moment a baby is given sugar, ketone production is blocked and brain development suffers.
Animal models are limited because small brained animals do not require ketones.

Dropping down into ketosis was the quick exit for fixing a bout with COVID-19 early on for me. I caught it on an airplane and after a positive test and immediately stopping consumption of all net carbs, I was out riding my bike after three days. The virus deprives the mitochondria of glucose and you become weak. When you stop all carbs then the body goes into ketosis and the mitochondria shift to mostly ketones (BHB) for fuel. The body generates endogenous glucose as required mostly for the brain. It helps to be already fat-adapted. This is a primary strategy of animals. They simply stop eating for a while to flush out a virus. One of the reasons COVID was so bad was that most people are not metabolically flexible between glucose and fat use.

So, by eliminating carbs, your body begins to, eventually, use fat for fuel, rather than glucose. Glucose prevents ketone formation or usage in the brain, & glucose can be responsible for causation or allowing insulin resistance to continue, in the brain. Hyperglycemia & hyperinsulemia can result, in a vicious cyclic process, that causes beta cell die-off in the pancreas, leading to chronic inflammation & damage to tissues, organs, & blood vessels, throughout the body, that could wind up as arterial plaque, & heart disease & stroke, from clots that block circulation of blood (& the oxygen & nutrients that RBCs supply). Is this overview correct? I didn’t mention, even, the detrimental effect of fructose, in the body’s metabolism, from the breakdown of carbs during the digestion process. Someone, please clean up my shaky overview.

I think we should learn how to go into ketosis and test it. But we should also recognize that one can still lose weight and control blood sugar and insulin response by being simply low carb. I find low carb easier to maintain in the long run and for me, sustainability is the most important thing. I’ve been in and out of ketosis and have lost 140 lbs so far. I did not think I could ever do keto and cannot see myself eating sardines. It would be awful for people to be discouraged by the high bar or sardines and keto. I was that person one time. It made me fail at fasting because I didn’t cut the carbs first. I am in a good path now and thankful. Maybe one day I could do full carnivore for a bit, but for now, low carb alternating with keto and intermittent fasting with some longer fasts has kept me on the path. I like sweet tastes and have not given up sweeteners, either.

If not then what? Exogenous ketones? True that when I have tried C8 despite the drawbacks it dues what it says on the tin - insulin down reg and focus. But insulin down reg has to be the first go to with fasting ( dr.Bikman) messing with hormonal balance can lead to aromatisation.. also and watch out for " unisex" supplement formulations... Or is better below 80 carbs per day which is not easy but feasible. Or to produce ketones must we go to 42 carbs which is challenging.

Depending on how high your carb are when you start you will feel better when you lower them to the amount your body can use and not store.
When I started I lowered my to 100 carbs a day. I added more lower carb vegetables and cut out fruit to one a day. Also, I took out grains. I did it o e at a time, slowly so I didn’t get keto flu. My body had adjusted and weight loss is slower but I feel better at 50 or below…
