Herding Sheep and Planting REAL Trees in my Indie Game! | Devlog

- It's been a very busy month, having started a new job, moving to a new flat, attending game dev conferences, and much more. Still, there was time to make progress on Farewell North so let's see what's new!

First up this month is a few graphical upgrades, namely with the grass and terrain shaders to both fill out gaps in the grass, but also reduce the overall density for some nice performance improvements. A number of you have commented on the gaps in the grass in the uncolored world, so hopefully this will help on that front. With the memory visuals, I redid the shading of the base models, while also using @unity's VFX Graph to add thick layers of particles on top of the models to give an airy and ethereal feel to the memories.
Starting production on a new area of the game I wanted to incorporate more of the characters' backstory, and after my trip to the highlands this summer I was inspired to add sheep herding to the game! I think it's a pretty fun little mechanic that helps build the relationship between the characters.
On Discord this month I released a new meta-game for Farewell North called "Colour Clash" where we're planting real-life trees from the game! It's good fun, so come join Team Yellow and help me plant some trees.
We also had art and game jams on the Discord, so I'll show you the winners and the weird game I made with Unity and Blender in just one day.
I hope you enjoy the video, and please leave your thoughts down below. Don't forget to like, subscribe and of course, wishlist the game on Steam!

Farewell North is my personal passion project, an open world adventure game about restoring color to a dark and desolate archipelago where all color and life has left. You play as a collie working alongside your human companion to explore, solve puzzles, evade monsters, and restore color to the islands.

Sorry for the wait on this one folks, but hopefully it's worth it!
That grass update is a GAME CHANGER. Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks so much, really happy to have that one fixed up
Your two rules for sheep herding are two of the three rules for artificial entities called "boids" intended to simulate bird flocking behaviors. It's pretty cool, you should look into it.
Nice, thanks for the recommendation!
Sebastian Lague has a good video on boids
I really like the sheep herding and character background development. Great work!
Thanks! Hoping to share more of their backstory, without spoilers, in the future
It's really great ! I love the voice so much and I'm pretty sure i'll enjoy the narration when i'll be able to play. Keep the good work, it's amazing to follow your progress !
Thanks so much!
@@kylebanks is the demo still available
Everytime I see footage of your game I am so amazed by how stunning it looks. Filling up the world with color looks extremely satisfying!
Thanks so much 😊
Wow. Sheep herding will be great for this game. I can see it really working well for loads of scenarios!
Thanks! I think it's got a lot of potential to be a pretty unique mechanic
I searched devlog and saw that fire thumbnail, graphics are 🔥i subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Great devlog as always! I especially love the sheep, they're so fluffy 🐑
Thanks for all the support Manuel, and congrats on Upside Down Country 🇦🇺
First time voice acting already sounds like a pro
It’d be cool if when the weather is particularly nasty in the game it’s either really hard or downright impossible to cannoo, which might make it so you’re landlocked or have a big incentive to stay on a particular island and solve a puzzle.
Definitely!
Wonderful choice of voice direction here, the voice fits the atmosphere almost perfectly. Love it.
Thanks Alex! I'm really happy with how it's coming together
Herding mechanic!!! Omg I love it so much. Now you really convinced me to buy the game. Tbh I wouldn’t mind a whole game with just herding sheep 😅 Loved this devlog and it’s awesome when you go into more detail about how the code works!
Thanks! I think it's a pretty unique little mechanic but I was a bit nervous to see how it would be received. Really glad to hear you like it ☺️
Yessss I have been dreaming of an open world herding game, finding pastures, streams, safe spots to spend the night, etc
Thumbs up for trees
sorry the gecko game i was working on never came to fruition, i had the gravity changing (Hence the upside down theme) and it caused way too many headaches btw farewell north is looking more and more beautiful every time. i love these videos, they always inspire me to keep trying to make things, thank you :)
Thanks so much, thats very kind of you to say. Shame about the gecko game but there's always next time!
it's growing good
Thank you!
Hahaha the jam game is actually pretty legit
Finally, someone who appreciates art
Game looks stunning. Voice acting fits very well. Sheep herding looks really great, could be it's own game :)
Thank you! Glad you like it, haha I think a dedicated sheep herding game would be awesome
so glad the grass is fixed looks so much better
Awesome 👍
We all missed this but man this devlog was amazing and this is worth the wait
So glad to hear that, thanks!
No. Thank you
The character voice is sounding pretty nice
Glad you like it 👍
Thats her first time voice acting? Surprisingly good for a first time.
Glad you like it!
nice
So nice
This is so smooth sir. Interesting game!
Thanks so much!
Cool room, has great vibes :)
Thanks! 😊
Great devlog!!
Also looking a great game!! I like it!! Good job!!
Good luck working on it :D
Beautiful work as always. Very impressive.
The voice acting adds so much to the game and although your actor's voice wasn't what I had imagined in my head, her voice works brilliantly.
Glad you like it, Maxx 👌
This game looks absolutely amazing!😍
Thanks so much!
Such a beautiful project!
Thank you! 😊
We've heard only 2 voice lines and ALREADY feels like a AAA game... I don't know what you think, but your friend's got some talent!
Thanks so much, I'll be sure to pass the feedback along
Oh man, I am SUPER envious of your plant room!
It was a huge selling point for us! Our last place just had a couple north+south facing windows, now we've got a huge variety of lighting conditions and tons of space to expand the plant collection 😍
@@kylebanks omgggg that's so awesome! I love plants so much. All that light would be a huge selling point for me too!
Quick note for your voice actor as someone who has done a fair bit of reading and voice-over work (for my own videos): One of the things voice actors often do incorrectly, or readers, is they'll say their lines too quickly, running them together in a way that's not only unnatural for the acting, but also for how people would speak in real life. It might seem simple, but just keep in mind: Slow down!
As for the game-play, it all looks like it's coming together. My only comment is this: It's fun to add things based on viewer input, but remember that the core mechanics and level design is _the most important thing._ Don't let yourself get bogged down by either scope creep, or by less essential features if you still don't have the main ideas down.
For instance, I haven't really seen anything in the way of how the game will actually progress as a "loop."
"What's my motivation?" I can imagine myself asking.
Anyway, looks phenomenal and I'm excited to play!
All great feedback and advice, thanks for that 🙏
nice nice cool
thanks!
I waited for this one but it was worth it. 😀
Happy to hear it! Now that I'm all settled in the new flat I'm hoping to increase the UA-cam content. Feel free to throw this reply back in my face if I have another 2 month gap between videos XD
@@kylebanks Count on me! 🤣
DAMN wow
🙌
And here comes the best devlog of the internet! 🐶
Thank you very much Max ♥️
WOw, that's a ton of progress. It looks great, I like the voice acting, and I think you were way to difficult on yourself with your jam painting game.
Ahah thanks, it's just a silly little game

Amazing update on the visuals. However something I noticed, especially now when everything else is looking even better, is that the rock texture on the terrain (not the actual rocks, which looks great btw) is looking a bit cartoony and out of place compared to everything else.
I've definitely heard that before, I'll have to address it for sure. Thanks!
I was just wondering where the devlog was. And then I got this! Is it Christmas?
Happy to deliver for you!
Releasing my game "The Glade" on steam on the 16th.. wish me luck!
Good luck!
Lookin shmexy
Well thank you 😊

Hey Kyle, I just want to let you know that you always getting recommended as "gaming" in my feed. Unsure if this is your intention, but as a programmer myself, I think you could benefit a lot from being featured in another category since the "competition" in gaming is just so huge because of all the "real gaming" videos.
just wanted to let you know!
All the best :)
Thanks for the heads up! I think it's important to understand who your target audience is. I'm not making these as technical tutorials or anything, and I actually want to reach gamers more so than other developers. It's definitely more competitive though so maybe it's worth experimenting with some different categories
@@kylebanks i kinda thought that already, good to know that it's your intention :)
Can't wait until the game is ready, following a few devlogs and your game is definitely on top!
Oh thanks so much, great to have you following along 🙂
I think you need to have a look a your grass.
From a low camera angle it looks great, but from a higher angle ( for example at 0:38 ) it looks a bit weird to me.
can you elaborate a little on what looks weird to you?
I always imagined the human to be in her early 20s but now she sounds like she's middle-aged
The character is intended to be late 20s and the voice actor is around there as well
Sir you are one of my inspiration , it is alot to ask but can I get a heart pls :)
You got it!
@@kylebanks OH MY GOD

well done 👌
cool i am first
