  • The story of Narcissus, most famously told by Ovid, is a tragedy that has fascinated artists for over 2,000 years. Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí set about painting a canvas in homage to the myth in the Spring of 1937, and took the completed work with him to meet the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, in London in 1938. Dalí had long held Freud in great esteem, his canvases often swarming with references to the psychoanalyst’s ideas, and so the meeting was the culmination of a deep ambition.
In taking his painting 'Metamorphosis of Narcissus' with him to meet Freud, Dalí had hoped to engage the doctor in conversation about the myth and psychoanalytic concept of narcissism. But the meeting didn’t go according to plan…
In this HENI Talk, hear renowned Surrealist scholar Dawn Adès recount the story of this historic meeting of minds, and discover some of the mind-boggling techniques Dalí employed in his masterwork.
Filmed on the occasion of Freud, Dalí and the Metamorphosis of Narcissus
An exhibition at Freud Museum London, 3 October 2018 to 24 February 2019

It amazes me how people from completely different time lines can share very similar, yet different, lives. I absolutely enjoyed replaying and reanalyzing the lecture of this video. It was extremely fun investing my time to listen and view this video about that beautiful painting!

Thanks for your lovely feedback, Justin. You're so right: they both had such fascinating lives - and were fascinated by each other! We wonder what might have happened if they'd spent more time together...

Paranoia is a very useful tool to your survival but can also be detrimental if it's over blown and isn't guided by rational thinking. There is a split second in which you're put into high alert mode in which a sound or an image can be misinterpreted as a potential danger but then usually your rationality kicks in and what was seemingly a threat turns out to be the silhouette of a bush or other random object that vaguely resembles something more threatening when it's completely harmless. It's amazing just how quickly the human brain can both imagine all of the potentially dangerous scenarios and then quickly reassure you that you're just being mental and to chill out.

An amazing video about the interpretation of Narcissus by Dawn Adès. I'm really inspired by her perception of the painting as a play between the double-images. Obsessed.

That was amazing. Looking at this painting I NEVER saw it as a hand holding an egg until she mentioned it now but unlike other things I can go back and forth between the skeleton/hand

I never experienced extreme paranoia until I did lots of cocaine. Its the reason why I dont do it anymore. I dont wish it on my worst enemy.
