Salisbury Plain, 5000 Years in the Making

  • Salisbury Plain is famous for its rich archaeology and with a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments.
Stonehenge which is perhaps the world’s most famous prehistoric monument. It was built in several stages: the first monument was an early henge monument, built about 5,000 years ago, and the unique stone circle was erected from Welsh Pembrokeshire stone in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC. In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby.
The Stonehenge Cursus (sometimes known as the Greater Cursus) is a large Neolithic cursus monument on Salisbury plain, near to Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England. It is roughly 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) long and between 100 metres (330 ft) and 150 metres (490 ft) wide. Excavations in 2007 dated the construction of the earthwork to between 3630 and 3375 BC, several hundred years before the earliest phase of Stonehenge in 3000 BC.
Old Sarum is one of the most enthralling and historically important sites in southern England. Uniquely, it combines a royal castle and cathedral within an Iron Age fortification, and for 150 years was a major centre of both secular and ecclesiastical government. Neither castle nor cathedral was occupied for long: in 1226 the cathedral was moved to Salisbury, although the castle remained an administrative centre into the 14th century. Old Sarum lived on, however, as a notorious ‘rotten borough’ which continued to elect members of Parliament until 1832.
Figsbury Ring is home to an unusually designed Iron Age hill fort, containing a smaller, Neolithic enclosure. Views from the ramparts reach over Salisbury Plain, Old Sarum and Salisbury Cathedral. Iron Age pottery has been found at the hillfort, dating back to 500BC, towards the end of the Iron Age, but more interestingly, a Bronze Age sword was also uncovered at the site - potentially making Figsbury Ring older still.
Ludgershall Castle was probably built in the late 11th century by Edward of Salisbury, sheriff of Wiltshire, and had passed into the hands of the Crown by the early 12th century. Lying on the edge of a medieval forest, it was frequently used as a royal hunting lodge. The castle was much improved in the 13th century by King John and his son Henry III, but had fallen into ruin by the 16th century.

Thanks Christian! Yes, guilty as charged, I love history! And there is so much of it in and around Wiltshire, UK. In my later videos, I have dropped the subtitles and now narrate, it's more daunting, but better I hope 😬 Take care, cheers, Chris from Blighty 👍

@@LamboPhoto Narrating is great but leave the captions. That way people from all languages can understand!

@@MainlightDrone True, but UA-cam has a Subtitles button, which automatically translates my voice into subtitles in any language 😉

@@MainlightDrone On this one, yes, because YT has corrected detected there is no speaking. But if you check my later ones, where I am narrating, YT has enabled the Subtitles icon 👍
