Andrea, you have no idea how helpful your videos are to me. I am basically studying and working all the time. I was just about to give up studying tonight to watch youtube videos (and probably regret later.) then I saw your video popped up, I am so glad I watched your video first because now i feel motivated again(so i am gonna go back and study some chemistry, yay). Your video motivates me every.single. time. I just want to say thank you for taking the time to make those awesome videos. One quick question, since you always seem to have super busy schedule, do you ever feel not motivated? What do you do when that happens? Danielle
I feel inspired when watching your video. I was in a real slump these past few days, and I came across your videos and felt motivated and inspired. Thank you !
My routine for staying healthy is bike riding, pushups, squats, crunches, and meditation, along with praying and studying,i also eat very well no sugar, vegetables, fruit, juices, rice, beans, bread, chips, i would like to incorporate swimming into my routine along with walking along the rivers treeline,i starting to take pictures of my local ecology just to be better in tune with nature,i dont drive,im also growing an indoor garden, thank you for the videos, they are very helpful, excellent example of health!
You inspire me so much. I am so glad that I found your blog because I am about to start my first year of undergrad in the fall and you answer so many of the questions I have about college and med school.
you're amazing! Thank you for uploading so many videos with what worked for you, they're so helpful and I have implemented some of them into my own routine :)
Thanks for this video! Extremely important and relevant at all times - medical school is such an unhealthy environment, it's crazy if you think about it. Talk about wine and water... It's really something I want to talk about. I might do a blog post about it... I feel like there's still too much emphasis on the "work hard, shut up and DO it" in med school. We gotta take care of ourselves, too, you know?
Doing the beach body workouts have really helped me while in med school. I get a better workout doing those then going to the gym and it saves time from driving to the gym. Thanks for the video!
Just found your channel and I am so inspired by you. Thanks Andrea for sharing all these info. I am currently in my 5th year of Med school in Europe. :)
Your so inspiring. I wish to be as bubbly as you as a doctor. Im 18 and live in Australia studying my last year of school. In Australia we can go into medicine straight out of school which I hope to achieve! It might seem crazy but I go for a run every night on the treadmill for 40 minutes at around 8-9 o'clock. As I said it sounds insane to be running at 10pm sometimes, but its incredible. It relieves so much stress that builds up every night after school and allows me to feel refreshed before I go to bed. xoxo
Oh Andrea you have NO IDEA how much I love seeing your smiling face in my inbox!! Hope everything's going well so happy for you!! And LOVED the topic! Currently in a study rut with the MCAT ): Maybe adding workouts will hwlp
Thank you so much!!! Studying for the MCAT is the worst!!!! I'm so sorry. Try to reward yourself with something every day- I got really into pilates when I was studying for the MCAT. And I ate a lot of oreos ;-)
Wow, you're doing your residency at Mayo Clinic ! Doing my residency at Mayo Clinic has been my dream since I was in the 7th grade. (I am currently in the 9th grade) I was wondering if you could please make a video regarding your SAT scores from high school. Also, what are planning on specializing in? I plan on becoming a Cardio thoracic surgeon. With Love, - Rania
Hey! I just wanted to say that wow you are truly an inspiration! I love your study habits and things that you do to study like using the whiteboard and you are fantastic. I am in medical school right and I'm hoping to go into emergemcy medicine and I over yoir channel and your blog..good luck on your rotations!
lol I'm watching this video as I'm eating a bag of chips taking a break from studying immunology. Your really cool! I just stumbled onto your site while looking for videos on splenocytes lol I'm studying to get my medical laboratory certification!
Hi Andrea, thanks for this video! I was just wondering about your first-year medical school schedule. You described studying for anatomy while working out and during dinner, and then showering and going to bed. When did you make time to study for your other classes?
Your videos as so great and very helpful! I am applying to medical school and I am curious if you could share your process of choosing school to apply to? Is there a certain website database you used? How many did you apply to? How did you decide on which ones you wanted to apply to? Your advice would be super helpful because I am not sure where to start! thanks
Hi! Thanks so much for your comment! This isn't going to be a very helpful answer- I knew I wanted to stay in state for medical school so I only applied to Indiana University. I applied early decision which means you can only apply to one school. I knew I didn't want to pay out of state tuition unless I got into Harvard or something, and I thought my chances at that were low, and I was pretty sure I would be accepted early decision, so I just went that route. Sorry that's not sure helpful!
Thanks for the idea of using notes while on the treadmill or bike. I wanted to try that so on the way out with my notes to go to the gym, I dropped my phone, cracking the screen. Just thinking, had I not have watched your video, my phone would have been fine. Oh well. At least I got in a good workout.
Thanks for making all your videos! I will be a junior in high school this upcoming fall and I was wondering if you had any advice on how I can prepare for Pre-Med and medical school now? Also I want to be a pediatric surgeon. :)
At IU all the lectures are streamed online and you can access them whenever you want. Lectures from the previous year are also available, so sometimes I would watch the lecture from the last year the day before the same lecture, so I could take notes and then just listen the next day (does that make sense?). For anatomy, I watched some lectures over and over. But, I didn't do that for most classes.
For me it's the cooking part that's the hardest, I just don't get the satisfaction from eating something that I've made..is that dumb? lol So I've really gotta buckle down and start pushing myself to cook because I eat way too many pre-cooked/packaged meals just because I can't bother spending the time to cook. I hope you're still loving it at Mayo!!!
Wow. I live in Minnesota too! I am planning to become an orthopedic trauma surgeon. Hopefully go to mayo medical school and do residency in Mayo as An orthopedic surgeon resident and do a fellow ship there for a critical care. Since they are a Level 1 trauma center. Am a high school student! What advice would you give? & can you still get to Medical school if you were not that great in Highschool? Thank you very much!
Hi! I'm 13 and I want more than anything else to be a doctor. I understand that because I'm in England it is slightly different but does anyone have any tips on what I could do in the upcoming years whether it be volunteer ideas or what medical school is like? It sounds crazy but I practice suturing on bananas and watch surgeries online and read biology/ chemistry books non stop! Any ideas at all would be helpful because all other videos an vlogs/blogs don't really have anything clear on them! I don't even know how many years go into it and what they do in those years?
Hey! I just thought I'd share that I absolutely LOVE your videos!! They're always so inspirational and well organized. This is such a huge coincidence but I'm actually studying premed in MINNEAPOLIS! How's Mayo going? Do you have any recommendations for extracurricular activities? I've done a lot of shadowing in hospitals and am a member of the Red Cross. Do you have any other activities in mind?
Hey Peter! Thanks so much for your comment! Mayo is fantastic! The entire institution is incredible and inspires me daily :-) I think any extracurricular is good- the only thing that matters is if you enjoy it! As long as you are passionate about it, it will be a good experience! Red Cross sounds pretty great. Any leadership or working in the community will be a good. Once you get to medical school, you will have lots of difference options as well!
for a night shift where you start at 7pm. how does that affect your sleep schedule adn when do you sleep and get up before your shift? just curious and as always loved this new vid:)
We only do one night shift per week, so I try to take a nap before going in, and then sleep a few hours the next day, but still go to bed at a normal time the next day so I'm back on track. In medical school I did an entire week of nights, so I totally switched my schedule. But, for just one day I try not to let it interfere with my normal schedule :-)
oh i see! Thanks for sharing :) I'm not in medical school and not even planning on going either, but I'm a business major and I just love watching your vids! especially all your fitness/health/study tips ones! (so essentially all your videos haha)
Hello Adrea i have to ask you about USMLE preparation step 1 i am going to be Third year medical student what should i have to start with in my preparation without any negative effect in the rest of the two final years and my medical school Teach medicine in just 5 years opposite to that medical schools in the U.S which is Teach medicine in more than 5 years ad thank you for your videos it's really appreciated .
Just a question... where did you attend undergrad and med school?? Does it really matter where one goes to for undergrad to get into a good med school?
I went to Butler University for undergrad. I don't think it matters too much as long as it's a 4 year degree and you do well in your classes and on the MCAT :-)
Also I just thought of this question.... do you remember stuff you learned from anatomy and physiology in undergrad now? or is it more just the stuff you learn in med school that is relevant to your practice now?
I didn't take anatomy or physiology in undergrad. But, I remember some things from my undergrad classes. Certainly not everything. And definitely NOTHING from organic chemistry lol!
Does Anyone on this post know how to Contact Andrea? ? She's in Yemen and said it was very Violent over there and Feared for her life ? . We're friends and she has been my Pen Pal since being over There. I LOST CONTACT with her 4 Days Ago. Very Worried About Her ? . Anyone know anything about her please send me a message.
I studied for 2 months- June and July after my sophomore year of college, and I took it at the beginning of August. I didn't study all day everyday, but I did study for 5+ hours most days.
wow, you'd think they'd serve something a little more healthy than fried chicken and mac and cheese at a hospital where people are supposed to get well! packing lunch definitely seems like the right option. :)
I almost always sleep 7-8 hours a night. There were many nights before exams that I would only get 4 or 5 hours, but usually no less than that! And never for multiple days in a row!
adoctorinthehouse Do you find that most people could have sleep habits like you, or are you the exception? Because from what I've heard, med school is hell and you don't even see your family or have time for hobbies. If you could please explain that, because it is one of the reasons I am avoiding becoming a physician. Thanks!
Nick Boldan I am a medical student, going in to third year. At my school, she would not be an exception. The vast majority of students will get enough sleep (6-8hrs per night). There were the outliers who would pull all nighters and the like, but they are few and far between and I would highly recommend against practices like that. If you use your time effectively during the day, you should not have any issues getting enough sleep, or even *mildly* pursuing a hobby or watching a show. There will be phases where you must sacrifice those things for academics, but more often than not you will have time for 'short and sweet' visits with family friends or other interests.
time management will determine how much you sleep. Get work done one time and you have more time to sleep. In reply to Beepimajeep, less sleep=Bad memory

Danielle
I just watched about 5 of you're videos and I love how positive you are. Thank you so much for all of the advice. :D
No matter how busy I am, I always try to make time for exercise! At least it gives me an excuse to eat a little bit more of what I want!
I feel inspired when watching your video. I was in a real slump these past few days, and I came across your videos and felt motivated and inspired. Thank you !
I love the idea of reading or going over notes while on the treadmill/elliptical! I'll definitely have to try it the next time I work out.
Routine is so important when incorporating a healthy diet and exercise in a busy schedule. Thanks for your personal advice! :)

I'm a pre-med right now, and I just wanted to say I love your videos! they're really helpful! :)
Thank you!!
TheLastPrefect Hey! Med student here from Europe. What is pre-med? (does it start in high school?) =] just curious.
Martin Bedan Pre-med can start in high school if we are talking about volunteering. Generally, we call people pre-med in college.
Carrie A Jarrett So I've asked people and they tell me college is almost the same as university. I assume you cant study medicine in college?
Grant S You're so nice. I don't mind that you're not Carrie. Thank you for a most definitely sufficient and precise answer. (:
I'm So Happy I Found Your Videos They Really Cleared Up Some Confusing Things I Had Even Tho I'm Only In High School Thanks So Much
i am so proud of you! i've ben following you for a while now, and you've inspired me so very much. thank you!

My MCAT was in the 90th percentile and my GPA was a 3.8 :-)
Great video! How old are you?
Cora Sisson I'm 26 :-)
Is your husband a doctor too? How do you get your job schedules to work out?
My husband is a Physicians Assistant and works a pretty normal 8-5 schedule, so it works out!

Sorry if this is tmi but what were your grades like in highschool? GPA?
OverTheTopTech I had a 4.0 in high school, but not in college :-)

You may have to be careful about doing weights once you start ophthalmology microsurgery...
OMG,,did you say 7pm to 11 am?! ..that's 16 hrs
Yep! Only 16 hours over night though. I haven't had any day shifts longer than 14 hours so far. But, next year we do 24+4 hour shifts! Tlhompho Ditedu
