- It is day 12 of our Atlantic Crossing, and we kick off the day with some breakage again!
We are pretty down about it, especially considered how many incidents we’ve endured so far. Bur our friends and former crew send us an email that brings a smile on our faces and we carry on our day.
By the end of the afternoon, I get a genius idea, and we stop the boat to jump in the water and swim in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!

You could crimp a lug with a vise-grip until you can do a proper fix. If you have no vise-grip, then spread the bare wire into a 'V', and sandwhich between two flat washers and tighten the nut. We used to jump in the ocean, get out a rub joy dish soap all over, then jump in and right back out of the ocean. You come out mostly salt free and clean. Great video guys. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve made crimped connections with a lot of things in a pinch. Vice grip pliers, normal pliers, hammer, hammer and chisel, hammer and flat screwdriver. You might have had to taken the other end of the wire off to get it up on deck where you could work on it (which probably would’ve been a pain) but there’s options outside of an actual crimper.
A jumper cable would do too.

I enjoy these video segments so much. I amd glad you keep the quibbles and strife in the segment. Life is about struggle. It isn't the movies. I hope you guys sail the world over the next 5 years. Doing what I have always wished I could do.

Just listened to the Andy Podcast while putting in my replaced ports and Ryan’s comment about working on a sailboat taught him to take apart his sister’s dryer. Skills are so transferable! with a crew of 50 we only had salt water showers no fresh water rinse during our 20 day crossing, but did have plenty of people for watches. A day before the Amazon it rained, what a pleasure to get a freshwater rinse. Was on 3 mast, Black Douglas back in 74.
as a backup for shower water. A 5 gallon spray pump for gardening works great. Can take a pretty proper shower with just a couple gallons. Great as a backup for moral.
Lovely episode and you make this all seem so real.
I would love to do an Atlantic crossing a lot of my friends have but getting a bit old for that now, but at least I experience it with your video diaries.

Sophie , you and Ryan are punching above your weight , Ryan did an awesome job of designing the water maker, yes there will be teething problems but he did a great job..

Great video, y’all are my favorites! Some Very bright stars do appear to blink red to green especially when low on the horizon in dark skies. Based on you description it could be the star Capella which is often reported as a UFO. It is in the constellation Auriga.
Very close and I mostly agree but actually, Capella is far too north in the sky at that latitude to be what she was pointing at. She was pointing east to south so if it were a star, it would more likely be Vega or Altair. I looked up the Stars & Planets on that date and in the middle of the Atlantic and it's pretty clear to me that what she was looking at was Saturn and Jupiter. They were nearly superimposed on each other at that time. I was out between Bermuda and Martinique about a month before that and they were pretty close but Jupiter was superimposed with Venus. I couldn't believe how big and bright those two planets were way out at sea (I'm very familiar with them up here north of Toronto. They are very easily picked out by the naked eye and when they are low to the horizon, they often flash different colours as the atmosphere is mixing there so you get a rainbow type effect. They were both low on the horizon just after sunset and would have tracked just like she said. The biggest call for UFO's is usually Venus or Saturn. Any time they are close to the horizon, they also look much bigger and closer (e.g. the moon).
An excellent choice of music... classical at 22:44. I wish more sailors would add classical music to their videos. There's nothing like listening to classical music - pump up those tunes! 🎵 ❤️ Happy sailing!
Murphy strikes!!! but you guys handled it pays to be prepared and all those hours prior to departure payed off. Ryan you put an awsome system together and the part that let you down was not your doing.
Put the 2 together with a u bolt for temporary! Just a switch! Wrap with paper to pad then cover with electrical tape!
I'm sure it was probably wave action, but that fork/spoon moving on it's own at 21:53 while you're talking about the lights was spooky.
I think you two just showed me the bad part of cruising. Needing tools in the middle of a passage... even worse than not having a shower... darn tooling... 👍🙂
Skuli Jakobsson , I used to worked as an avionics tech with a tool crib stuffed with tools at work what they didn’t have can be brought in the next day from which ever station had them. Now, all I have are 1/4” drive sockets, a Mac ratcheting screw driver with multitude of different tips. Can’t even change a turn signal light in my car 🙂

Gotta remember, he's a pilot. His training was ya mess up, ya die. Not an easy mindset to get out of. Yeah he's critical of messing up, but at the same time self criticism is often the best. Haven't seen him make the same fuck up twice, so it's working.

I've never bathed in mid-Atlantic but I have bathed in mid-Med! I had to jump (with a few hundred other souls) from a catwalk on the side of the Commando carrier about 50 feet into the sea. When I came up I swam away from the ship about 50 yards and when I turned around to look at the ship it had followed me and was right behind!! The ship was HMS Bulwark and I think it was 1974...
I too had the, 'I wonder what's down there?', thought and the resultant shiver upon the realisation that this water was several hundred feet deep at least...
LOVE this. Just love it. And I cant wait to swim in the middle of the atlantic! (5 years, just 5 years. OK, 7 until this, but 5 until boat.)

As stars come up over the horizon the atmosphere refracts the light given off by the star. I’ve seen this so many times in my career as a pilot crossing the Atlantic. I used to think it was another plane (red and green) until one of my more learned, more experienced colleagues taught me that stars close to the horizon tend to change colors as they rise. BTW, really enjoy your channel.
Sophie is so calm, lessons learned to have the proper tools on board because you never know and it might help someone else.
I hope to sail one day. And swimming in the middle of the ocean has to be one of its main rewards. I’d do it even if I ever sailed alone.

If it didn't move in its relative position in the sky, then it was definitely a star. It is unusual to be able to see a satellite or the space station with the naked eye, and even then they are only visible for a short period of time (definitely not 4 hours). When you see a star flickering and changing colour (red, blue or green) you are seeing the effect of the refraction of the light through the earth's atmosphere. If the position of the star is low to the horizon, the effect will be more pronounced because the light is travelling through much more of the earth's atmosphere than if it were directly overhead. In the same way that the sun looks less yellow and more red when it is low to the horizon and the moon appears bigger when it is low to the horizon. All are results of light being refracted through a very thick layer of atmosphere.
Sorry you had problems with the wire crimp. You can fix those at temporarily with pliers and a hammer. At least enough to get you to port with some fresh water. I am the fix it guy on our boat and just like yours there is always something needing repair. Is it because it is a boat or just a guy thing? Stay safe, healthy and happy. Happiness creates immunity.

"the boat will still continue to move forward with 1-2kn because of the current ..." - in this case, you will move also with 1-2kn because of the current ;) The difference in drag is not really significant and there is no wind.
But admitted, it feels a lot safer if you can grab this line in the middle of the ocean.
Ryan, DUDE when it comes to boat repairs on the fly you have got to learn to be more creative and adaptable. There are so many ways you could’ve created a reasonable connection so that Sophie (goddess of the mid Atlantic, Or anywhere else for that matter) could’ve had water for a shower.I would’ve held the two cable ends together with my teeth for that woman :-) cheers and I hope you guys are holding up well during the quarantine :-)

I’ve built and wired countless motorcycles, some with hidden wiring through bars and frames etc, I hate crimp only connections, they can’t be trusted, they need to be soldered as well just the solder flux is corrosive so the connections need to be properly cleaned and have short section of shrink fit over it to help brace it as they can snap: it can take a fair bit longer to do it but it’s well worth the bother. A mate had a new Series 60 Detroit engine installed in an old truck, the auto electrician who wired it was the fussiest ever but when done there was no way any of the connections would fail, he said the new electronically managed engines have to be wired without fault so not even WD40 could get in.
thats exactly what I was thinking if you were worried about the funk, just becareful you don´t get left behind and either bucket or rinse off in the ocean. Its salt water so its good for you, or one would think
Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but if you need a tool to do a job, borrow it to get the job done, but buy one for your own tool kit. I can't think of how many times I needed a tool I once borrowed from someone who I couldn't rely on later. To be fair, my usual rule is if I borrow a tool twice then I need to buy it, (but that's for cars) the reality is that once I've bought it I don't need it and only loan it (in the USAF we call that the umbrella effect). Trash... if it's got any organic sticking to it (aka cans) drag it in a mesh bag to clean it (kinda like lifting most of the chain and dragging the chain to get rid of the hairy stuff).
You could make a crimper with a large g clamp and some small diameter rivets or something to push the sleeve in . Itll be alright
I have would rip the other connector for the watermaker out then crimped the 2 together with a pair of vice grips to make it work. Any much say how many times I've done this for cars bad starter relays Are faulty battery connections due to oxidisation overtime. Only in emergencies though.
I never mind a salt water bath and fresh water rinse. I think my skin prefers it that way.

Its a planet. Low in the horizon, there are many atmosphere striations you are viewing the light through. This is bending the light into different parts of the light spectrum. This creates the different colors and blinking effect.

The red and green low on the horizon lights are low orbit satellites.
By the way Sophie describes the movement throughout the night, my guess is that you were probably looking at a star. By your position at the time and the date, my bet is that you were actually looking at Capella, the brightest star from the Auriga constellation, which explains why when Sophie sees the star at the start of her watch, the star is appearing at the east (even though she says west), and by the time her watch is over, it appears to have moved to the south.
I live in Costa Rica, so I'm close to the latitude you had while crossing the Atlantic, and at the time, the rain season was finally over and I was able to stargaze all night, I remember seeing Auriga in a similar position as described by Sophie, which makes believe that it was in fact Capella. I can't be 100% sure but that's my take on the mysterious blinking light.
Oh, I almost forgot. When the light from the star enters at a low elevation at the beginning of the night, the atmosphere refracts the light (like a prism) and the red and green are the result of the refraction

Could you have been looking at Sirius also known as the dog star. I describe it to my wife as the traffic light star because it appears to flash red and green . If I look out the back of my house in the uk I can see it on a clear night. Does anybody out there know if that is possible, keep up the good work.
I would agree it is probably Sirius. I recall seeing the same phenomenon looking East over the Indian Ocean while at Mombasa, Kenya. I’ve also seen it low in the eastern sky while sailing the Gulf of Mexico. I used to be a C-130 navigator and taught celestial navigation, so it was easy enough to confirm using the charts and almanacs I had at hand. Now, it is MUCH easier to confirm by opening a star finder app on a smartphone.

I know you probably fixed it by now but you could have soldered the wire and put it back in the switch.
Have you ever successfully done that on cables that size? If you have I'd love to see a video of it. I would almost have to burn my boat to the ground using the stuff I have on board, to solder that gauge cable. There again my apprenticeship was 48 years ago when we could use real lead solder and heated our irons in a gas stove. I was thinking of buying a big heavy duty soldering iron, but I am hoping Ryan will demo his crimper instead.

An airplane would only have either port or starboard nav light pointed at you so it wouldn’t be flashing both colours at you... used to see them flashing red green thingies too always wondered.

What is it with french peeps and Christmas Pudding? My french family look at it as if it's something from the deep too. You needed custard. Or brandy sauce. Flaming Cognac. But seriously, a hint of cinnamon and it's too "épicé" for y'all. What a waste. At least the fishies were able to celebrate Christmas with a bit of pud. Then again I almost vomit with even a whiff of truffles, so your pasta last episode would have made me barf, berk! 😁

Seriously though, this is not an airplane its a sailboat, rig-it-up and it will work. :-) You literally have all day to mess with that connection.. closing the hood and putting a crimper on the shopping list is now how you operate in the middle of the Atlantic, improvise, adapt, overcome.. just keep improvising until it start working. you can do it.
Once got back to the boat after finding a old nail in the sand and using it to replace the broken cutterpin to the prop. tools involved, a screwdriver, piece of metal, a rock and a nail, not pretty but saved me from swimming 10 miles.
edit - sorry for ripping you on this, you are my favorite UA-cam (right after Sophie naturally) and you are lightening smart, no reason to not sort this in route.

Aren't there reports of deep water sharks (that are very hungry!) that are very aggressive?

Before reverse osmosis became standard, waste heat from engine was used for desalination. Some survival packs also had small inflatable distillation units which used sunlight. Quantity of water produced was small but they were quite reliable (and big). There are also manual reverse osmosis pumps, do you keep them as backup. How easy is it to collect rainwater during passage?
PS :- was it possible to use pudding as fish bait? ;-)
We knew from the get go that we didn't want to rely on the watermaker for our water, so we weren't too bothered (minus the showers!) and apart from the crimper (that we now have) we have everything we need to repair anything that would break, so we're pretty good :)
I think the fish would have FLED if we had used the pudding as bait! 😂

Concerning the blinking lights, its probably a helicopter off of a navy ship.
jeffrey foy do they have radar? If so, wouldn’t it show up there?
@@perrydiddle3698 Helicopters do have radar as well as the naval vessel, the ship may be over the horizon and your probably seeing a helicopter out there making its rounds.
Does Ryan speak French or any other languages like Spanish perhaps? I think on long passages it would be cool to speak another language for a week.

We didn't shower everyday on the sub either. Called water preservation. Considering the source of water was compromised, it was the right call.
