    Little story for you...compromised position of a 3 man patrol...me and the other guy are laying down fire...CCT is trying to call in Tac Air and is reloading mags for us...our shit is looking weak...we know as soon as the sun comes up we are done for cause there are a shit ton of them...CCT guy is calm...talking to pilots like he is talking to his mom...loading mags, racking us on the head and handing them to us...sky is just starting to have a hint of light and he yells..."breakfast is here boys!!"...and has the biggest shit eating grin I have ever seen as he pops a smoke...we are like WTF? has he gone batshit crazy on us? That's when we hear a sound what I still consider the sweetest sound in the world....the chainsaw burp of A-10's coming in right off the deck....they cleaned house...I mean turned the ground to hamburger....we broke contact and were picked up...it's been along time but every sunrise my mind goes back to that moment...best and worst days of my life and I wouldn't trade them for anything. CCT's are the best...and Joe B., you were/are the best of the best my friend.

    My brother is a cct and is currently deployed. He’s done tours in Latin America Europe, the Middle East , and Asia . Don’t know where he is now but I’m really proud of him. There unique because they can operate in teams or attach themselves to other sof units like delta, DEVGRU, and ranger recon. Combat controllers are really special because In my brothers words, they’re operator “nomads” meaning on one deployment their with a delta or cag deep in isis territory and in another deployment they could be aiding DEVGRU in a mission in Bolivia. They train constantly. A lot of this training goes towards the fact that before deployments they learn the tendencies and culture of the units that they are going to deploy with. One of my brothers missions was counter insurgency against drug traffickers and drug lords all over Latin America. When sof deploys on these kinds of missions they deploy in plain or civilian clothing- even posing as local police, or military as to not raise suspicion. In my brothers case, in that deployment he went in plain clothes and even posed as a fake cartel in one op. The show seal team does a great job with the details and portrays sof units in the most accurate way I have seen in a tv show. The character Trent is a Cct medic and engineer impeded with DEVGRU in that show. My brother is a radar specialist. I’m pretty sure he’s trained in what Trent does from seal team too but I’m not certain. As he doesn’t tell me much. But what he does tell me I cherish and share because things don’t last forever and heroes deserve to be remembered!

    Something I realized is that combat controllers seem to be grossly underrepresented in movie depictions of military operations. When I read books or accounts of those same operations, the combat controllers are always mentioned, but the movie versions almost never seem to include them (granted, I could be mistaken as I was never in the military and might not recognize the uniform or badges if they were included).

    • @xXsilentvatoXx
      @xXsilentvatoXx 5 років тому +2

      gutspraygore if you want to see a CCT operator in a movie watch the early transformers movies haha. But in all seriousness you are right, the reason is that the CCT community is very strict on the information that gets out. They have made it taboo to talk about anything they do in their career field. But if you want to know some of the things they’ve done read no room for error. They have an interesting history, they helped Delta Force become the army’s special mission unit and were liked by Deltas founder so much they always had a Controller on their ops. As for why you don’t see them much is because they tend to wear gear similar to the unit they’re attached to so they don’t stand out to the enemy, but generally they have a CCT patch on the shoulder for easy identification in the field and a big antenna sticking out their back.

    • @knight6

      If you watch the film We Were Soldiers that stars Mel Gibson and takes place during one of the first battles of the Vietnam War, there 2 scenes with a CCT. SPOILER ALERT
      Mel Gibson's character Col Hal Moore tells his CCT that their position is about to be overrun and orders him to call "Broken Arrow", in which all available aircraft would attack positions around the unit. The CCT in another scene calls some air strikes very close to their position but one aircraft gets a little too close to their mortar position and releases napalm before hearing his call to waive off. Unfortunately the bombs hit the US mortar crew and Col Moore tells the CCT to "shake off" the friendly fire incident from his mind and keep bring in air support as it is what's keeping them all alive.

    The range of skills they must be proficient at place them on top of other Special Forces within USSOCOM. This is the impression I get away with. Yeah, I know., this is not a competion amongst Special Forces branches and all of them are meant to work in unison to get the job done but upon the exposed in the video they seem to be pretty essential and pivotal in accomplishing goals in the battlefield.

    So in terms of the kind of work they do on the ground, what is the difference between CCT/Combat controllers and TACP/JTAC from the earlier video? Does CCT focus more on coordination of aircraft that aren’t providing fire support than TACP?

    • @Rodeo-iz7cg
      @Rodeo-iz7cg 4 роки тому

      Thomas Hudson TACP’s are strictly JTACs and mainly deploy with conventional army units such as Infantry Battalions or sometimes Ranger’s, TACP’s are not special operations forces (SOF) and do not deploy with Green Berets/SEALs, etc. However, a TACP can choose to become a SOF TACP which requires additional training and selection. If they pass that they can deploy with SOF units.
      CCT’s are strictly SOF and deploy either as a team of CCT’s or as an individual attached to a Green Beret/SEAL Team. A CCT’s primary job is Air Traffic Control but they can also become JTACs (which most do).
      In the JTAC realm, a TACP will usually work the big picture aircraft coordination from an operations center while a CCT usually will be out in the field with other SOF teams calling in air strikes.

    Are all the CCTs nowadays JTAC qualified?

    • @georgewashington64
      @georgewashington64 5 років тому +2

      All CCTs learn Fire support during Combat Control School in Pope Field. But the JTAC school is not required, a large number of Controllers do go to JTAC school and maintain the qualification.

  • @robbelliii

    It sounds like these guys are like Forward Air Controllers on steroids. Is that the right way to think of them? As an former Artillery Officer I used to work with AF FAC teams when assigned as a Fire Support Officer.

    • @xXsilentvatoXx
      @xXsilentvatoXx 5 років тому +7

      robbelliii not really, I mean they do have that tool under their belt but it’s not what they do. He did over simplify it and for a good reason because their job is difficult to explain. Their bread and butter is Air traffic control but they do everything on the map. Basically they are experts when it comes to the air, they are a link to the air for ground guys. CCT operators are communication specialist that can provide CAS, artillery support, and naval gunfire. What makes them unique in the SOF community is their air traffic control qualification, they can jump into an enemy’s back yard and turn a dry lake bed, road or clearing into an air port and bring in other SOF units who they will then attach to and provide additional support for. But that’s just one of many thing they can do, their HALO and dive qualifications make them highly adaptable to missions outside their original purpose. They aren’t attached to other units only for their CAS capabilities because anyone can be trained in CAS. They are highly sought after by the other units because of their communication capabilities and what they can bring to the table skill wise.

    Till this day I don't feel its a significant difference between CCT and TacPs. I feel they both can operate in identical situations. Theres a lot of overlapping operational capabilities once you get to tier 2 and so on.

    unfortunately the information in this video is outdated, entirely due to the fact that AFSOC is changing very quickly and dramatically. still a great video nonetheless.

      One of the things that has changed is that the age has moved from 17(1/2) to 30, as per the video, to 17 1/2 to 39. I'm not sure as to why they increased the age limit, but that was definitely an interesting change.

    • @HurricaneHugues

      JTAC is the school they go through, TACP is usually attached to regular troops, whereas CCTs are attached to SOF teams

    • @knight6
      @knight6 3 роки тому +1

      @@KINGRODP TACPs are all JTAC qualified, meaning they can call in close air support. They can also call in artillery. Usually they work with the conventional forces, especially the Army. Some TACPs can go through more training (dive school, jump school, once in a blue moon some go to sniper training, etc) to work with other special operations forces like SEALS, Rangers, Delta, AFSOC, etc.
      CCTs go through a longer training pipeline as they will spend most of their time with special operations units. They all go through dive school, jump school, air traffic control, SERE, etc. Most of them are JTAC qualified to call in air support but a few aren't. They can set up a LZ, DZ, as well as creating an airfield (or capturing one to use) with their air traffic controlling abilities.

    How can you confirm someone was indeed a CCT?? Have a gentleman climbing to have been a CCT for 20 years but his behavior does not reflect any type of behavior I have ever seen when working with JTAC’s and CCT have more training. SOCOM has web sit does the AIr Force a similar one to verify.
