I’m only turning twelve and while I wrote two novels since 10 years old, I still have a long way to go. And it’s fun! I only found out about Ana but I’ve learned a lot about making my characters better. Wish all of you luck on your writing! ❤

9:50 I just thought of something. Whatever fatal flaw, fear, and desire you have for your character should end up helping you with everything else you fill out. The desire should be a part of their values. The flaw could have more twisted stuff wrapped up with that, and things that they've learned to be accustomed to doing. And certain character traits they've gained because of their desire and fear and fatal flaw. And even how their environment has shaped them.

This is going to help me a lot, because I have focused on developing two characters for a new book I plan on writing, and they have a lot of trauma. One of the points in the book is for them to move on from the trauma. I will definitely come back to this when I start writing.

Pro-tip: think about why they have trauma and if it’s necessary. Add other things so that the trauma actually is impactful for readers (ex: character loved swimming but they almost drowned so now they can’t be near the ocean anymore). Are they well-rounded characters without bad things happening to them? If they have reactions to things stemming from trauma, focus on show don’t tell (flinching, things they say, etc etc). These helped me a lot.

Thank you for your video, great tips :) I would love for you to recommend some craft books that deal with certain topics you are pointing out. When it comes to creating interesting characters I can highly recommend the Thesaurus of Emotional Wounds!! That was a game changer for me. Building your character from the wound makes things so much easier and you then know why they behave how they behave or what they would and wouldn't do in certain situations :)
Sending you love and creative vibes

You should maybe make a server in discord or something for your viewers that write and can share their ideas or books.

I'm 13 and want to write a novel. I love reading fantasy books like HP, PJO, Magisterium, Eragon and suff like that. I want to write something similar to this but I find everything has already been done. I feel like if whatever i write is remotely close to something someone else has written I cant use it myself. I wanted to write a book about 4 characters each a different magical race uniting an ancient land but that was too similar to Eragon.
I also struggle with really defining my characters and worldbuilding without being way too specific. Any tips on how to introduce the land/characters naturally and not like im writing descriptions of all of them?

Hi, im maybe not the best Person to give Tips because i have never written a Book but im kinda in the same Situation as you, just that im ten years older. So i cant give writing advice but maybe a little bit of life advice. I really feel like you (and me because same) should not have this big thought of writing a masterpiece as a first book because it most likely wont be like that and it can be really discouraging when you realise its not going to be that great. The goal should be writing your Story and bringing those characters to life more than being a 13 year old bestseller author. It doesnt have to be a masterpiece to be important to you. If you manage to write a book at that age thats very impressive, i really struggle with that as a 23 year old. So please be proud of whatever you will come up with.
Also i dont think you need to have something no one has ever done. The character behind the Story are in my opinion more important than the Story itself. As long as the characters never experienced that before, and the Story matters to them, it will matter tho the Reader because the characters matter to the Reader. Im sorry if im writing a little bit akward, im very much a german so please dont judge🐥
