I appreciate this breakdown. It shows you know what you're doing and not just coasting by on "cool ideas" that accidentally make a good story. I'm really excited to see where this show goes!
You made a pleasantly refreshing argument about proper cutaway usage. People likely have gotten too used to the incorrect presumptions about stuff like Family Guy whose history is soaked in sketch and sitcom styled comedy with its 'throw everything at the wall and see what sticks' method of humor which absolutely can and does work, so they overlook anything with cutaways because they assume they're all like that yet you've clearly explained here one of what I am sure are many other methods to make them feel incredibly organic and cohesive. It's very impressive and only intensifying my anticipation for the pilot. Everything about the show seems comfy in all the right ways, so I hope I've correctly perceived the show as such and don't say, contribute to making it shift to being that way. After so many projects showed that their creators are capable of delivering on the 'promises' made with the pilot and/or deviated far from it but made entirely appropriate retconns down the road to explain the tone or writing shift, I'm much more confident in those creators -delivering- on quality products and DF seems like it will deliver all the same.
1:02 "the way we are confortable with croswalks" Ah yes, not me almost getting hit by a car in crossroad in a country no driver giving a shit to croswalks
I love how you didn't make either of them one-note. Reminds me of early Mythbusters. Adam and Jamie had both serious and playful moments. But once they became mainstream, executive meddling and editing played up Jamie as the serious one, and Adam as the silly one!
I recently got poked your way, and I enjoyed the pilot. loved the story, the characters, the char designs... a fun little animation. I even managed to build a Mauly in heroforge. just had to skip the clipboard for a laptop, but one has to go with the times y'know. :) looking forward to more Dungeon Flippers. :)
this is so fascinating!! i love hearing the in-depth stuff about creating a story. you really did such an effective job establishing the characters in such a short amount of time!!
this is interesting, it got me thinking of my work on how I introduce my characters thanks for the video. you think you can do videos on humor writing?
Your take is on the superfluous information it's really interesting. I didn't think about it while watching but after you mentioned it I did realize how it stands out from what a typical show would do in a pilot. A lot of other shows would have something in this early scene relate to the final conclusion. And honestly that's always been kind of clunky. I only like realizations when they come out of nowhere or from something that I genuinely forgot about the story. I suppose you're conclusion connect to her first displaying her powers, but because the realization itself just has to do with her stating who she is and what she does best, it feels a lot more on the spot. It doesn't need setup. She's just affirming who she is. Excellent show and I like your approach. It's got some genuinely great jokes and the aesthetic is absolutely gorgeous.
"Building the bit" should be done for every episode. Just like house of the dragon, they also have behind the scenes segment called " the house the dragons built."
1:56 Sculls fall to early. It would be better if it went "it's going fine" and then sculls fell apart - It would better depict character being pinched a nerve.
Just curious, is this an owl house mature show, or a hazbin hotel mature show? Are you wanting this to get picked up by a network, or keep it indie all the way?
I'd say the pilot is TVY7, so Owl House level. There's no swears or explicit scenes. There is some Addams Family type macabre humor and there will be some intense emotions in one scene, but nothing that I think requires a content warning. Ideally, I'd love to stay indie but staying funded is something I can't guarantee at the moment. If I can't raise the funds for more episodes, I'm planning on trying to shop it around to networks.
Hi there, this might be a terrible place to make contact, but what's the best way to get in touch with you? (I may have sent an email about a library convention, but didn't know if that was the best account to send to!)
The art style is giving big Owl House vibes and I'm all for it.

It takes good stories, good characters and good personalities to make a pilot

I love this, just not minding the traps of the dungeon because it IS a normal thing in this world, oh so great, really excited for the pilot
You know what, I think I'm going to learn a thing or few from you? Your pilot episode was chef's kiss perfection!
If only competent people like you worked at disney.... ahhh one can dream.
This is really interesting, I love seeing behind into people's processes while writing, drawing, animating etc. It's really fun and educational!
This was a really nice breakdown. Looking forward to seeing the full episode.
The quality and animation of this pilot was so good i forgot it was an indie animation pilot!! 🥺💖💖

It really feels like I’m watching the Owl House again, even Molly reminds of Luz.🥰💖
I love how you didn't make either of them one-note.

Dang, it's not often that one gets animation and storytelling lessons from the development of a project!
I don't care what they say! I love anthropomorphic cute characters!
Your characters are just adorable! I love them so MUCH🥰
Can't wait for their competition shows up
That’s a fair point about crosswalks…

This was really motivational to watch
You, good sir, have a splendid thing going and I'm ecstatic for the pilot.

Adorable story❤
I cannot wait for this pilot/show
This is really helpful
Pretty good tutorial, hope the animation does well.

Sorry for the slow response! I just noticed the email and will get back with you soon.
I'm excited for this series let it become as unstoppable as rick and morty!!!!
the voice acting is really bad
