NETHERLANDS: Spakenburg village, old fishing port (Utrecht)

Spakenburg is a Dutch village. Spakenburg is formally called Bunschoten-Spakenburg since its fusion with the town Bunschoten. The village lies south of the IJsselmeer in the municipality Bunschoten, Utrecht (Netherlands).
Spakenburg has been a fishing port; fish processing and fish trade still play an important role in the local economy.
Shipyard Nieuwboer serves as a restoration yard for existing fishing boats and other historic ships.
Spakenburg is one of the few places left in the Netherlands where some women still wear local traditional clothes. On the last two Wednesday in July and the first two Wednesdays of August, there is an event in Spakenburg called the Spakenburgse Dagen, in which people dress up in local traditional clothing and dance and generally celebrate. There is a roundabout, a clown for the children, a big market and music.
The carillon tower Bunschoten-Spakenburg was built in 1985 on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Dutch town of Bunschoten, which was celebrated in 1983.
