Just so you know, that buck in my neck of the woods is a nice deer. If I saw that, it would be down. Where I hunt, you cant let anything go, its all up for grabs. That is why I hunt, for the meat, spike or 10 doesnt matter.
Drives during PA late flintlock season is probably one of the best way for friends and family hunt and make memories. Picking among friends and family always but I like how you set the record straight by saying yes someone would proud of a 8 point buck like that just in your group of friends maybe not so much. Good video
i personally love deer drives if they’re out on correctly. you have to really know and trust the stranders and pushers. i won’t do it with just everyone but i’ve got my group that i love doing it with. it’s almost a lifestyle
Used to love the comradery when we used to drive deer. That was 15 years ago and things have changed. I agree, me and my son are trying to build a strong foundation for mature bucks. Glad you guys busted barney's balls good.lol
I miss the days our families would get together every deer season.first day was sit day but after that we would do deer drives.unfortunately the drives have come to an end but i am blessed all 5 of my children hunt and we usually fill our freezers during bow season.i think deer drives may be in the forcast for 2023.
When I was a little boy Pennsylvania had 3 designated doe days. At 12 years old I was always walking on the drives. Then at the end of the day occasionally I would be allowed to drink a beer with the adults. It worked out just fine. That was way before everything became so intense in our culture and even way before the internet.
@@craig5649 , everything was different back then. The legal drinking age was 18 in New York which was where I lived (Waverly, NY). We were more free in those days to make a judgement call without intense scrutiny. For me, I was responsible and it felt good to be with the men and to be accepted which is of paramount importance to boys. This certainly wouldn’t fly in the culture we have now.
@@dp26385 I'm not disagreeing with you. I was 12 in 1973, when doe season was 2 days. Schools were closed the the first day of both seasons and nobody showed up on the second. At 12 years old I was considered a young man with two part time jobs scraping chewing gum from under tables. Times are forever changing.
@@craig5649 , sounds like we have similar stories. I might have been wrong in my original post about the 3 doe days. It might have actually been only two as you mentioned. As I read your reply I laughed because you reminded me how school was closed on the first day and nobody showed up on the second. That is so true. I lived in NY right on the southern tier border with Pennsylvania similar to Cliff’s set up where he is. My Dad bought me a youth shotgun, 20 gauge because I was too small to be able to shoot a rifle. I have good memories from those days.
@@dp26385 I live in Titusville, about 45 mins south of Cliff. In 75 or so they started extending it to a third day based on the estimated kill. Eventually the went to a 3 day season before mixing it with buck season and screwing up two long time traditions.
Nice video. Driving is just another way of hunting. Done properly, very safe and effective. Definitely not for everyone like gun vs bow. It’s all hunting. Have fun, be safe.
We grew up making drives and I loved every minute of it. Thanksgiving was a big family get together and deer drives were a tradition! After my father passed, the tradition slowly faded away. I started hunting mostly by myself a few years ago and loved your no pressure strategy. Killed my two biggest bucks the last two seasons and I doubt it’s a coincidence. But I’m not gonna lie, I love your deer drive videos and watch many others here on UA-cam as well.
Love what you said about getting together with friends and family driving the deer. I love to shoot deer buck or doe. I hunt on 60 acres. We sit to ten and then a push. That’s my favorite part of the hunt in the late season. Love your videos.
We enjoy the week of deer drives in December.great fun with a great group of people. Also it's a good way to get young people in front of deer. Yes they need to be done safely. But it sure is fun
Same thoughts. I wont do em on my property but can work to your advantage on public. I know guys drive the place I hunt on weekends. Get up as high as you can on ridges. Missed a huge running 8pt with 4 doe saturday that was pushed way down below.
I feel the same way, late season with family why not. We used to do them all the time back 30 years ago. Deer weren’t managed then like they are now. We know so much more about them then we did then. Plus deer were shot mor for subsistence than for management, enjoy Cliff
I think they are fun and a good way to help friends and family who may be struggling. As long as they are done in a safe manner they can be a real hoot.
Enjoyed the video Clifford. I enjoy deer drives with the fella's like you. I primarily still hunt and enjoy that too. I appreciate your videos and enjoy your channel.
I love doin deer drives on stateland after about the second week of season because the place gets pumbled with hunters and deer dont like to move and when someone gets something its like we win as a team and it makes it fun.
We hunted with dogs for years ! We also did man drives before dog season ! It’s all really fun ! People have to realize down south our wood are thick thick ! We’ll have a 500 acre pine cutover that you can’t walk through, much less see 20 yards and stand hunting is only done on property lines which in some cases cause problems with neighbors ! The only way to move deer is dogs ! We no longer do either ! When I’m in northeast Nebraska we do pushes with only 4-5 men and we use the wind and have taken some trophies!
We like to start drives later in the season getting everybody together and razzing the one's that miss it's all part of hunting plus I like to get out the ol 300 savage or the 30-30 winchester. Fun time to get out the old classic deer gun's.
Learned to hunt on family farms in Sinclairville NY doing deer drives, learned a long the way that was a way to kill small bucks and does , but if you want to hold your mature bucks on your property leave them alone , slower hunting action but bigger deer on your property, got to say deer drives were a lot of fun and great memories with friends and family back in the day.
We used to push all every Thanksgiving, I miss it but any more we will have 3 or 4 watchers sneek into positions and one or two guys will still hunt a block, works well, but only done during muzzle loader season
Great vid Cliff, glad to see some success in those drives. I personally love doing deer drives, particularly on state land where we aren’t familiar with what deer are in the area makes it exciting. Definitely can be dangerous, but as always when hunting be safe and cautious.
In the ADKs my group has had tremendous success with deer drives especially when we do not get snow so we aren’t able to track. With safety I believe they are very successful in larger chunks of land if done right
We like to sit the first couple days of gun season here in Wisconsin. Then, as the deer feel the pressure, they make their way into the thickest nastiest stuff they can find. That’s when we start making deer drives. It’s the only way to hunt those deer that are hiding out in the thick stuff. We do these drives on thousands of acres of public land and are always very safe.
Good video, i enjoy the cameraderie of drives and the action but just the same as you, we began to realize what it does to our deer hunting and have taken more and better deer since we stopped, yet neighbors continue to drive and the deer hole up in our spruce grove and we capitalize, it’s nice to see other people think the same.
Like you said everyone has their own ideas on drives, personally I like low invasive deer bumps, so it just gets the deer walking towards the standers. We don’t walk all the way thru the area, maybe half way then turn around and back out…stay safe and Merry Christmas 🎄
I shot a up and coming beautiful 7 on accident a few years ago here in Michigan . Shot a big doe and didn’t see the buck 40 yards in grass behind it and hit it in the right eye ball . 2 deer in one shot ! I was mad at myself but after a few mins , a deer is a deer and said whoops
When we used to have unlimited doe tag, due to overpopulation, years ago we would always do drives on last weekend of muzzleloader season. We would normally "wind bump" them and would take allot of deer. Best weekend was over 20 does with 5 peaple. The population is way down due to CRP being taken out so we haven't done them in years, never really saw big buck even though we new they where in there.
I have never participated in a drive nor do I think I would but I like them when the guys on neighboring land put them on! LOL Nice buck Terry, I'd be happy with it but I'm more a meat than rack hunter, not that I wouldn't like to get a nice one.
I hunted from age 16 until my father passed away when I was 38. I haven't hunted since and I'm now 55. We didn't have our own land or knew anyone that had any, so we could only hunt on state land and that was the only way that we hunted, by putting on drives. We had a hunting party of 10 to 15 people. I was one of the youngest in the group and was always a "driver" and and the older hunters were the "watchers" and in those years I never saw a buck in the woods. I shot several doe, when I had a permit. Anyways, I would have loved to have seen and shot an 8 point that size. To me, that was a huge buck.
I think the opinion on deer drives differ drastically when you own 500 acres and post it all. For those of us that hunt public land, deer drives are a very good way to get the deer up and moving. Not everyone has the luxury to ride their sxs out to their pill box and watch a 80 acre food plot of brassica and standing corn. I watch 99% of your videos and I am a big fan.....but there are 2 different types of hunters......private land and public land hunters.....you don't want your deer to leave your property, so therefore drives are not in favor.....
Nothing wrong with that buck at all, I would have raised on him !! my family does deer drives, we make sure we ALL know where everyone is and where we shoot. Yes accidents can happen at the blink of an eye, but we try to make sure we do it very safely.
Cliff drives are good times with your friends if done safe and corectly. But i would not do it on my managed ground unless it was for one of those black bandits. Do they hit the standing corn in winter ?
Been hunting pa all my life. Deer drives are part of pa deer heritage. Anytime your in the woods during hunting season. There is that chance of a accident.
When I was younger we did drives with 10 to 12 hunters, maybe more. Now in my later years if I do partake in driving deer which is rare, I'd rather have 4 maximum people. Someone else in the comments below mentions using the wind to bump the deer towards standers and the drivers are more or less still hunting - seems to be the best method, because deer are more apt to try to sneak past hunters instead of all out running which offers a poor kill shot. The bottom line - if you're going to drive deer, BE SAFE!
Did the deer drivers with friends when i lived in Cassandra an stocking in the 70s an 80s thay were fun but i have to agree with you thay r dagres now in west Virginia im on a hunting license and we don't do the drivers
Last drive I did was during a cold snap -10.I knew how the deer would run and had three guys posted/sitting.I fought thru 3/4 of a mile of swampland with tails flying everywhere.Oddly,no shots, more tails, still no shots.I arrived to where the Three Stooges were supposed to be sitting and nothing.Apparently Curly,Shemp and Moe had "gotten cold" and left after sitting 10 minutes. The problem is finding a group of guys that aren't lazy, dangerous,or want immediate results with no real hunt in them. Have since hunted alone on Pa public land, managed to kill a 155 class buck and a few smaller ones. Can do without the deer being driven onto private land.
For someone like me who has hunted pa state game lands all my life so far. Being I've been shot almost twice. First time I herd the bullet whistle by my head and hit tree right behind me at neck level another year a bullet struck the tree I was leaning against at waist level. Switched to climbing trees durning rifle season after the second time. However my feeling are mixed toward deer drives. Where I hunted till recent was game lands 252. Lots of thick cover. Once deer went in they wouldn't come back out on less they were pushed. But there is way to many people in woods already sitting that the drive teams and sitters are unaware of. I think drivers should not be able to carry guns for starters. This way bullets aren't coming from both directions. I watched a guy walk thru the thickest stuff as his buddy yelled deer he pulled gun up to get ready he couldn't see more 10 yards in any direction as he was fighting the thorns bushes lol. Deer came thru he shot 3 times at sound. Buddy yelled did you get them his reply I don't know I couldn't see them. Deer were 30 yards in front of him. I was in a climber above all them watching. He had no clue what was on the other side of the stuff he was in. To solve alot of problems I think they should give a day or two for people who like to do deer drives there own days. If you choose to be in woods on those days then so be it. I left those state game lands now that my son hunts with me and moved to mountain hunting. If you have your own land then you can better organize it to make it safe. You can do what you want with it. You pay the taxes each year. Nobody should tell you what you can and can't do on your land. But that's my stories and how I feel. Have a safe rest of the hunting season.
There is nothing wrong with driving specifically when you have the people and a Little bit of time to get it done there are times I go alone wishing I had someone with me a few people are fine with me not to much into larger groups and when you are seeing deer and shooting have fun doing it stay safe that's all
We use to do deer drives years ago tell one of the guys got shot he barly made it we had to flight for life him out of there that pretty much ended deer driving for are group me and my bothers just wind bump now ,
Hey Cliff great video !! I’m not a big fan of deer drives was in blaze orange from head to toe and had a round literally go whistling right over my head.. seen to many wounded and crippled deer after drives .. my opinion
Worst possible thing you can do if you're managing a piece of property for the purpose of growing big bucks is to drive said property. 100% right Clifford.
The only time I will do deer drives is only for doe season in the beginning of the season I wouldn't drive cuz like you said you'll ruin your shot at getting the big buck after the buck season's over and doses and comes in and drive if you want meat in the freezer you only do deer drives on doe season
No apologies needed. At least you have enough people hunting to move the deer. My best friend and me hunted two hundred acres by our selves. I didn’t see any large bucks just a three point.
We mostly hunt like you if we're having crapy luck we will deer drive but I'm like you I feel it's pretty sketchy n alot of holes for the bucks we want to slip threw
I love doing drives… I would be more concerned about wearing the proper amount of fluorescent orange then how others feel about how you hunt. Hat and vest…250sq safety first.
You have officially hit the big time when an 8 pt buck is referred to as a "buck like that". I guess I am the only member of your audience that would have been proud of that buck and i'm sure my friends wouldn't have shamed me about the harvest. Life is good in WNY an 8 point buck is "ah too bad...".
I do not particularly care about the drives in New York or Pennsylvania for those that have adjacent properties it’s a zoo in PA we hunt in Alum Bank. And as the drive progresses we watch the deer funnel into the thorns on our property so it benefits us but the drums and bugles is a bit much pretty hilarious. I guess silent drive are not in the playbook.
If you get some fresh snow....go out spotlighting at night and find a good one then get on him the next morning like your coyote huntin only with people not dogs. I think it's an effective way to run and track a big buck down and kill it.
@@KEO__Vlogs A few of the big farmers around here do it with their "crews" they will go out and spotlight a big buck at night. Then get on it at daylight and run it threw everybody's property until they get it ran down and kill it. Mostly during the week while we're all at work lol right or wrong it is an effective way to single out and kill big bucks. If there's snow 🤷♂️
Is that a old browning a5 ? I love deer drives but only do them on certain land that we don't bow hunt and in woods we don't sit in only drive them once or twice a year. Works best when we wind bump the deer. What county are you in I usually head from mass to troupsburg in steuben County for few days for rifle opener. Love it out there its beautiful
I stopped doing big deer drives 4 years ago I seem to kill more deer with out doing them plus the risk of driving deer I was almost shot people aren't thinking when the deer jumps up or is running by I still enjoyed watching your video tho
My freezer's full. I got a nice young buck and a VERY fat doe. Shot the doe first after 4 young ones passed. She went less than 40 yards and fell over. I caught movement to my left and the buck came out. He was larger than the doe and I didn't even think. Boom! Dropped in his tracks, never got up. No blood trailing required. Both died within sight and were legal. The county where I hunt is 2 per day. But, being over 50 years old and by myself... I GOTTA stop doing that to myself!!! It took me an hour to drag out both uphill about 350 yards. And both were too heavy to lift up on the roof of my car. I had to put one each in the back (I'm driving a Chevy Spark!) My Toyota pickup is broke down. But, I can still do it old school! The first buck that I bagged back in 1986 was hauled out on the trunk luggage rack of a 1981 Toyota Tercel.
I think deer driving fun good way get some doe outta there and good times I call it holla hunting we have alot of flat land here in va with alot of cut overs more of a challenge when deer are running only use buck shot with shot guns but great video nice buck your buddy killed
When they’re on an adjacent property Im all for deer drives 😉. In all seriousness I’m not a big fan of drives. They’re very stressful to deer, they’re dangerous and rarely go as expected. I know a lot of people that do them and enjoy it but I’m not one of them.
I love how you guys have fun with each other. I really miss that. All my guys are long gone now.

I agree. Our 500 acres is what it is due to years and years of management and hard work. It's not as easy as it may seem to the viewer.
we drive the heck out of our private land one day each week of rifle season, usually each Friday
We use to do some small deer drives. Nothing wrong with them at all.
I agree with you on deer driving except that the mature buck will come back.
Deer drives are awsome!!!... Let the lead fly....you might get to unload your gun in a hurry....fun × 10
It’s crazy the different sizes of does from mn. Ishot a doe last year and it was 160
Had this Marine been in the drive they'd be stacked like cord wood!
great video there's nothing wrong with deer drives in my opinion have done them before on the last day of gun season. Specially on your own property.
That's a nice buck for where I live
Good work!
I’ve never done it….
And everything you said is true.
But , I would NEVER be against it!!!

90% of the land that we drive is always public land and it's usually end of the season just to fill tags
We public land hunters don't appreciate this, especially when you have the good fortune to hunt posted private all season.
I agree I don’t care for the drives myself. I thought how you guys were joking around about the buck was funny. Another awesome video keep them coming

When I was younger we did drives with 10 to 12 hunters, maybe more. Now in my later years if I do partake in driving deer which is rare, I'd rather have 4 maximum people. Someone else in the comments below mentions using the wind to bump the deer towards standers and the drivers are more or less still hunting - seems to be the best method, because deer are more apt to try to sneak past hunters instead of all out running which offers a poor
kill shot.
Good drives guys
Shemp killed me man lol
Little buck slayer 🤣🤪
DRIVES TOTALLY DECIMATE THE HERDS AND LEAVE A GREAT PERCENTAGE OF WOUNDED ANIMALS THAT GO TO WASTE.
There is nothing wrong with driving specifically when you have the people and a Little bit of time to get it done there are times I go alone wishing I had someone with me a few people are fine with me not to much into larger groups and when you are seeing deer and shooting have fun doing it stay safe that's all
We sit all archery session and drive all rifle session
Sucks he would have been a dandy next year but still a nice buck! Congrats on the kills
We use to do deer drives years ago tell one of the guys got shot he barly made it we had to flight for life him out of there that pretty much ended deer driving for are group me and my bothers just wind bump now ,
Hey Cliff great video !! I’m not a big fan of deer drives was in blaze orange from head to toe and had a round literally go whistling right over my head.. seen to many wounded and crippled deer after drives .. my opinion
We did deer drives in VT on the weekends I had better luck with the drives on taking big bucks.
I think the same way man, great way to get some meat and have fun doing it, not good for the big bucks.
Worst possible thing you can do if you're managing a piece of property for the purpose of growing big bucks is to drive said property. 100% right Clifford.
We drive the same property two to three times in a week. You can push deer out on Monday and they will be back by Wednesday....seen it to many times.
I agree Scott. Your mature deer will head for the hills and never come back after the first time in most cases.
@@lesleyboeder1798 Correct. 1 and 2 year olds. NOT mature bucks and definitely not mature does.
Can I eat the horns they do look pretty but that's about it
Me and My brother hunt public land in Cattaragus County.
Everybody wants to drive...until it's time to put boots on their ground lol
The only time I will do deer drives is only for doe season in the beginning of the season I wouldn't drive cuz like you said you'll ruin your shot at getting the big buck after the buck season's over and doses and comes in and drive if you want meat in the freezer you only do deer drives on doe season
Only do your drives at the end of the season I don't mind pushing deer
No apologies needed. At least you have enough people hunting to move the deer.
My best friend and me hunted two hundred acres by our selves. I didn’t see any large bucks just a three point.
He'll be good eatin! Lol congrats cause alot of people didn't get anything! Can't eat them antlers no matter how long you boil them hahaha
Thanks 👍
Fun Day 👍
We mostly hunt like you if we're having crapy luck we will deer drive but I'm like you I feel it's pretty sketchy n alot of holes for the bucks we want to slip threw
I am not a fan spotting. I think it's wrong and shouldn't be done to be honest.
Yes, Its a browning A5
I stopped doing big deer drives 4 years ago I seem to kill more deer with out doing them plus the risk of driving deer I was almost shot people aren't thinking when the deer jumps up or is running by I still enjoyed watching your video tho
We used to drive deer a lot but then had some close calls so I gave it up, 2 years later one of the guys in that group got shot in the stomach
Need to tell your buddy.... orange hat in Pennsylvania.....especially during drives.....
This is New York
@@KEO__Vlogs you say in the video your in Pennsylvania
Looks alot like a Pennsylvania tag in the deers ear to
@@danbaker2276 nope, this is all on our farm in New York. I must of misspoke in the video
Never really been on a deer drive. Not for them or against them. I just personally like to hunt by myself or with one other person.
Haven’t been able to get on your web site. I want to order a sweatshirt.
