We jumped on the Formula 500 SSC (Super Sport Crossover) w/ quad Mercury 600hp V12 Verados to see what these outboards can do while pushing around 50,000 pounds. That two speed transmission really shines on these bigger boats and we hope that translates here.

I used to own a Mike ring Rib that had twin optimax 225 on it( I would joke what's better than a 2-9 litre V6 24 valve motor.... having two of em )....i only made that joke once as the thing done gallon per mile, oh was a beast would ruin other boats costing 5-6 times the price on the whole shot and top end , now that's nothing but back then that was one dangerously quick mofo ( had trim tabs about 18 inches long which made me laugh... till we was actually off the trailer & opened it up the very first time- scary moment!

Now you can walk into West Marine and say you need 48 spark plugs.
Not sure that matters with the amount you’d be have invested with that boat.
And they tell you they only have 47
For only $1000
Lol, if you can afford this boat, you don't change your own plugs.
With 8000 gallons of 93 PUMP they will put those spark plugs in after refueling 10 times
When you stop for a minute to think about the fact that there are 48 cylinders running in tandem, it is truly mesmerizing.
I'll be honest....if I had this boat I would probably have more friends. Fake friends but still friends. Mooching, freeloading friends but more friends.

Well, you don't have to worry about anyone just walking by and stealing your outboard motor, it weighs over 1200 pounds.
This boat has one hell of a strong transom.
In another test video it was mentioned, that you need a specially made boat for it, it wont fit on most boats.
Now imagine those quads running 4 big superchargers.

I would bet that it's coming, no way Mercury racing isn't itching to make a 700r or 750r with them.

What is so cool is that only the lower unit is the only thing that turns the motor just sits there because the motors are too big so that is nice
@@brentmcmahon8188 Yep, I tried to design an RC version of this engine using a brushless motor and a servo to steer the propeller area and it was becoming a nightmare to keep the electronics protected.
But yeah, it's very cool how the steering works on this engine.

Tbh the 600 Verados are an attempt to reduce the amout of engines by making them bigger, and having a lower unit capable of pushing more water.
Althought the amount of horsepower is ridiculous.

There's a balance in nature, always a certain amount of engines.
Volvo killed 7 Marine to go green, Mercury doubles down with gas burners. Go Mercury.

Formula builds a great boat
That boat setup is awesome, the 600s are remarkably quiet and 66 mph in a boat that size is nuts. I like how Formula left room for a tender on the aft transom. Good attention to detail considering the draft of this boat makes a tender necessary for island hopping.
I'm sure if they make a performance variant of this those guys will want that exhaust to be more menacing, but it is quiet.

@@jakes5530 I would think that would be in the works. Two of those could power a 39 ft. Top gun.. A huge advantage over stern drives.
@@powerboatguy2308 yup but at that point could get a center console. Whole point of the shape of the cigarette top gun boats is to contain massive inboard engines behind the helm
Well it’s a v12! it produces less of those "bassy" tones than the v8’s, Also much smoother so less vibration.
Can't wait until the 600 tiller steer comes out next year!

I had to check the transcript when I heard 50k lbs. Getting a vessel that size/weight to 66 mph is absolutely incredible.
I was incredibly incredulous that the boat got up to such an incredible speed.

When I was ten, I had a 12 foot outboard racing prom with two new 7.5HP 1957 Evinrudes. I was hot stuff. I made a trailer out of bicycle tires and
2 x 4’s and would pull it up and down our front hill, Coconut Grove, to the Merrill Balf Docks across bayshore drive.. I used my grandparents 1958 Edsel.

V-12 is the correct architecture for 1K horsepower in a marine four stroke platform. Pump fuel quality is a limiting factor with forced induction.

50K pounds? I thought she was 44k? Bloody hell that's a lot of boat. Very, very nice boat mind you, close to ideal for where I live (lot's of sheltered bay area as well as offshore running) and I'd be more than happy as long as the range is good. I don't impress easily when it comes to design but the team at Formula have knocked this one out of the park, seriously.
2:21 What's most noticeable to me is how little vibration there in those motors. It is usual to see small sideways and bouncing movement in outboards at speed... these things are rock solid which makes you wonder if that vibration is transferring to the hull. I don't think it matters because the motors are surely mounted to mitigate that, but still interesting to see zero movement.

Great boat, thanks for the tour. I have one question - why is there a galley in the salon and another galley in the cabin? That seems redundant since the salon can be completely closed off from the weather. Can it be customized to use the cabin galley space for something else?

Beautiful boat and new engines. Unfortunately they are way out of my pay grade. Almost 70 m.p.h. on a 50+ footer is pretty darn impressive.👍👍

Odd there was no mention of the boats fuel tanks capacity or engine fuel consumption.
Mercury is claiming 20% better economy with a pair of these motors versus a triplet of 425 hp motors from a competitor.

It Just doesn't matter, when you own quad 600's! Just knowing your burning more gas in a minute, than most do all season! This makes people happy, when you spend a lot, to go fast, Quietly!

@@jimmycline4778 Its not a grunt boat mate and those are not race motors. The 600 is not an out and out performance engine, that's not its niche. On a boat like this you don't want to be deafened; if that what you want go buy an Apache.
that's all great for the quiet backwaters but would like to see it handle Beaufort inlet and a ride out to Cape Lookout. Transom is really low. Reggie Fountain would have that going at least 80+ ;)

first version of Mercury V12.. knowing how they can share same block and add HP, this 600hp might be only a teaser for mercury
I’ve seen multiple demonstrations of this motor now, but no one has showed how well the boat reverses. With the TRP props I would imagine there little reverse power with these motors. Makes stopping or backing up incredibly difficult.
it's likely this boat has front and rear thrusters controlled by joystick
I really want to see if someone like Searay comes out with a sub 30 foot bowrider with one of these on the back lolol
Edit: Come to find out, two 300hp fourstrokes are actually lighter than one of these, makes me realize this engine is more about space savings on the transom than anything. The gearbox might make the difference in performance though.
The difference is that with one of these you would use a lot less fuel. You also get the steering system and the dualing prop, which almost eliminates cavitation

Great video but for me It would take a miracle of hitting the mega millions to afford a boat like this and constantly hitting it every year to afford the gas and maintenance to operate a beast like that!
