I'm halfway through Philosophy of sailing. Its wonderful. I came for the adventure but the dry humor and cutting self deprecation really caught me off guard. You're quite hilarious.
The audio books are best. Terrific performances by the author.
A guy wears pink pants to the Apocalypse, you know he's not afraid of a damn thing.
Pink in ocean going terms is salmon
Thank you Christian, (you have the name of my big brother)
I always wanted to sail, at 50 years old, damaged and retired from the army, i forgot about that passion, thinking i was to old and that it was out of reach.
You inspired me to do it, my doctors says i would be good for my PTSD.
You sow, you cook, you wear pink pants ! you know how to use the internet ... you kick ass ! all my respect to you and sorry for those asses !
My 30 foot keeler sits patiently on her mooring, waiting, waiting.... I on the other hand am practising patience. Us humans are better at practising. It allows us to remember. No boating allowed here in New Zealand but I’m lucky cause I can still go sailing thro’ UA-cam. This was not possible that long ago. At least we can be thankful for that. Look after yourself Christian. Many thanks for your brimming videos.
Thank you for sharing your sailing life and experiences with us Mr. Williams. I suffered a terribly tragic accident at work 2 years ago and your channel helps me a very great deal. I'm on crutches and use a wheelchair at times, I feel trapped at times and it's great to see you in the sun and on the waters! 😄🌞🏝🏞
have you seen the impossible dream catamaran?
You sir are what we call in our part of the world "Bad Ass".. Thank you. For being you and putting forth the goodness that is Sailing. Just stumbled upon you last week. Extremely well done. Bad Assery at its finest! jg
Love you Christian. For the calm you bring us. Hope to see you on the wind one day.
The best way to self isolate. One of the reasons I got into sailing to begin with!
Another keeper. Can’t sail here in NJ yet and I’m also non essential so I’m home reading your two books on kindle and loving them both!! Thanks....
Hi Christian ... Good to hear from you again "Old Timer" ... (meant in the most respectful way, of course, realizing the incredible amount of experiences you have lived through, and therefore really deserve the title that only those that have been through all those times and experiences really deserves; Apologies that it doesn't 'sound' like that grandeur title that it should. But in my life and experience, that title even carries with it the reverence that a real 'old timer' deserves). I just want to thank you for sharing some of the most important parts of your life with us. I can't wait to see the next experience that you share. With Best Regards ....
Thank you for your content. I have a Nordic Folkboat in San Francisco Bay and enjoy racing. The Coast Guard canceled all permits for racing in 2020. A few exceptions have been allowed for single-handed racing, or racing with members of one's family with whom you live. I'm hoping with the onset of vaccinations that we will obtain sufficient herd immunity that we can begin racing again. We are allowed to sail, exercise outside and other such activities here in NorCal. Stay safe and keep posting.
Live on my Morgan 41 here in Bermuda. We are now under 24 hour curfew and all boats have to remain at their moorings. Glad to see someone out sailing. Stay safe and look forward to your videos, Sir.
As well as your message, it is wonderful to read all the supporting comments. Like everyone here, I love my boat and I am fortunate to be living in British Columbia. We are encouraged to get out for the exercise, fresh air and food for our souls.
Good on you for enjoying what could be your last day sailing for a while. Life is very unpredictable now, I would love to go out now but risked being fined here in QLD Australia. Stay safe and Healthy!!!
A true inspiration you are, Christian. Thank you. I'm in Michigan and our Gov. just extended the Stay At Home order through 4/30 and in that extension also ordered all "motorized boating" banned for the duration. However, kayaks, canoes and SAILBOATS are allowed. I am fortunate to have all of the above so rather than lament my loss I will just wait for things to warm a little and hoist a sail. You do such a wonderful job with your videos and I consider myself graced by your efforts. Keep it up sir.
Take care and thank you from Seattle Wa
I love these videos. They are very helpful and encouraging. I'm 57 and quite frankly sick of it all. I'm seriously considering selling everything, getting a boat and going....well...who knows where. Maybe Alaska, then to Hawaii. Guess I better learn how to sail first though. Could be dangerous.
I would classify you as "essential" so its okay. :)
Thanks for the video, Christian! I'm in L.A. as well, but my boat is in Ventura, and I'm looking forward to a nice day sail tomorrow. :)
Stay safe Christian , the world needs blokes like you ...greetings from Australia , cheers Phil
that bottle of guiness is the greatest! Thank you for keeping it going during this time when any sense of normal is gratefully appreciated!
I prefer a number of pint bottles myself, but the effect remains the same.
Thank you for your wonderful videos. I'm a big fan. I hope that you'll continue with some more commentary - even from land.
Thanks Christian. I needed that.
The gentleman of the sail!
Loved the video and your message about solo sailing during this craziness. Fortunately I am able to continue sailing out of Pascagoula, Mississippi. You have a great sense of humor and are an excellent communicator. Keep it up!
Thank you Christian. You have a paternal voice that attenuates the anxiety we are all feeling.
Thanks for this. Happy to see some full sails. Our boat is in Washington State, We are in Canada. o sailing for us.
You are not endangering anyone. You said it best, common sense.
Your sailing prowess is only exceeded by your witty words sir
Good luck Christian, stay safe. Warm regards from Perth West Australia
I very much enjoy your videos. I particularly appreciate your sense of process and order and focus. A well organized boat deck is a thing of beauty. When I was a teenager I was lucky to race sunfish and crew on some larger boats. I think I enjoyed the technical aspects of rigging a sailboat and the fundamentals of maneuvering the boat more than anything. You explain the processes very well. I always took pride in being well organized and keeping my boats in excellent condition. I think you and I would get along very well.
The pain from not being allowed to sail is being felt around the world. Unfortunately Its the sad truth. And it worries me. Well done.
self isolation ,,, wow the pandemic hasn`t bothered me one bit as i just dont like being around other people ,,, I go bush in my RV a 32 foot winnebago or hit the water in flapper a contessa 32 ,,, either way I love being alone ,,,,great vid Christian Keep them coming ,
Happy travels
R.J.T traveling the east coast of Australia ,,, (ALONE )
Superb of course!
Great post as always. Great job on the pram cover. I hadn’t noticed it before. Hope to see you sailing again soon!
Good to see you again.
Blessing and care for you and yours mate.
It is nice not seeing and hearing all these jets overhead. You know, I actually believe the air smells a lot cleaner. Good Luck Christian, we will catch you on the other side of this thing..!
see you soon! stuck at home in rome.... now for 41 days!
Thanks for documenting the last ride. We are in Port Mansfield; no sailing boats on this part of the Texas coast, but the fishing boat ramps and piers have all been shut down. My Mooney, alas, was left behind in Illinois and is now undoubtedly covered in a green slime of Corona virus. Hope to see you and Tracy when the plague lifts. Til then, stiff upper....
The Mooney will still fly, lad. it is only society that has reached the end of its TBO.
Chris, I can't wait to get back on on my boat SOULMATES on Long Island Sound. Thanks for the reminder of what we all are missing and what we all are aspiring to do again. Good on you.
We live in SWFL. SO far no restrictions on taking the sail boat out. However, travel seems limited in terms of overnight stays at marina's for itinerant sailors.
Perfect...simply perfect
Can't even go sailing any more in Australia stay safe mate
Charles de Montesquieu said: "Useless laws weaken the necessary laws."
"The French will be envious" CW 🤣
Oh you answered my question... I’m in California too but north by bodega bay
Lucky you, we are stuck on our sailboat in Spain. Also not allowed to leave for daysailing, no one is allowed to enter the marina. Only a few liveaboards like us are here. Our strategy is to wait it out instead of flying home and miss the entire season. Stay safe.
I've got a fever and the only prescription is more CW sailing videos!
You have inspired me to learn to sew. I will probably invoke your name many times as I rip out stitch after stitch.
Thanks...I needed this video
So glad to see you again, and what a perfect time to see you back onboard your boat. Cheers, Christian!
Thank you Christian
Great you got a sail in Christian. In Melbourne, Australia we aren’t allowed out for a sail - not even single handed! Thanks for sharing
Hi Chris. First, Than yous for great music and good cheer in latest clips. Helps in these gloomy days! Ask your opinion: how would you rate overall your Ericsson 38 as a blue-water cruiser? Question may be unfair, even unanswerable, but ask nonetheless. I'm looking for a mid '80, reasonably priced 35-to-40 footer, bluewater capable, and NOT built like a panzer tank. Not many Ericssons this side of the water, hence request for views. Many thanks in advance!
Very saddened by all who can no longer sail, as Moitessier said a sailboat is a living creature. They come alive when at sea and denying a sailor that relationship is a very serious injury. I will be sailing this week and every week; the risks to the community are minimal, flame me all you want yt.
Your observations on the Frito’s Jalapeño Cheddar substance reminds me of an ‘81 ridiculing I received from my then roommate. “Dave, your ‘Sandwich Spred’ has printed on the label, ‘NO EXPIRATION DATE’.”
Thank you for your amazing videos and greetings from Istanbul, Turkey. Unfortunately I am not allowed to sail "OneLife", my Beneteau First 31.7 ... Hopefully the non-sailing verdict will ve lifted by end-of-May. Cheers!
Just added Fritos Jalapeño Cheese Substance to our list of sailboat essentials. Looking forward to many more of your sailing videos. Stay safe!
Oh, think of all the carbon pollution you have save Mother Earth from, by staying at home. It wasn't much fun here in the Midwest and it still sucks today. It's what you can't do that hurts the most.
Fritos jalapeno substance about threw me on the floor lol that was a good one haha 😂
On the "plus" side, the present situation provides fodder for a future novel.
Love the pants, a slice of stout beer is a great choice, paper towel hanging the wrong way.. thanks.
No my friend that's the way paper on a roll must hang. If I had to explain why you just wouldn't get it ...
Sir, I applaud your sailing! I live on my 32’ Jeanneau in Alameda, San Francisco Bay. I was fortunate to sail this past Tuesday evening and I can’t imagine why the authorities would need to save me from anything. The peace and fresh air have reminded me that there is more to this life than my career, financial distress, and daily commitments. Actually, I can picture meeting with more harm on land. There are too many people living on the edge financially, medically, nutritionally. My boat is stocked with enough provisions to keep me alive for one month. I can see the benefit to anchoring out a few hundred yards off shore, in the bay. I wish you fair winds when you are able to sail again.
Thanks for another great video. Our boat launch date was cancelled due to the epidemic. Pleasure sailing not permitted in the UK either
It is delicious (Fritos cheese dip)but so not good for us haha haha. You are so relaxing to listen to
Thank you for the sailing sounds and visuals!
God has blessed you with a wonderful life, starting as a boy, what a treat, I would have loved to have had the adventure of being a true sailor...I’m sure the rant on the covid that I couldn’t hear was laced with profanity and still hanging somewhere over the mid-Atlantic impressing the whales.
Was within a few days of launching here in mahone bay,Nova Scotia but have decided to wait for a month
I went sailing saturday and yesterday, albeit on an 11 foot boat. My big boat is currently up on block piles awaiting new bottom paint.
Almost fell out of companionway I laughed so hard!
Hi! Enjoyed ur video as always. Curious which yacht club your penant hanging in the cabin is from.
By the way, we’ve had a total lockdown of all marinas and ports in Portugal for the past 2 weeks so I’ve been gasping for some sea time.
All those face masks should come with breath mints!!!
just another two more weeks until the 26th of April !! last PM announcement!! new rigging, new sails and I cannot sail !!! Here in Galicia nothing moves !! Great day sailing Christian ..... Well, we have to wait !!! Cheers and another beer to the crew !! and stay safe ....
Good to see you out! Im in the bay area and am going to take sailing lessons when things open again. Keep the videos coming your like the wise grandpa i never had. Also love marina dell rey! My friend lives on his boat there. I love down there.
I always find myself smiling watching your videos. :)
great.
Hold fast Christian! And thanks for some great covid-boating storytelling (a whole new genre). And for the reminder that this will pass.
I appreciate everything that you do for your viewers. Hopefully we will see more videos soon. I wish good health to you and your family.
I always look forward to your videos. We are in very uncertain times right now but we will get through this together. Thank you for the bit of sunshine you always bring to a cloudy day!
now thats what i call isolation.. good on you Chris i have watched all your videos..you are an inspiration mate !
As stout man myself, I salute you and your video!
It's nice to see Thelonius practicing 'social distancing' with that other sailboat.
Enjoy your words of wisdom and travels Thanks .
Fair well, Christian, until we meet again....
It looks like that was a pretty good Guinness, or three! Cheers!
Thanks Christian, as always, for the virtual experience! We're locked down in the San Diego Bay. Yup, time for a few Sailrite sewing projects. Stay safe all!
I want to say he sailed to Hawaii single handed. He’s not afraid of much in life 👍🏻
Great new boat cover!! . (BTW, I own two of your books..)
we are based in Gibsons BC and so we are allowed to come and go without reprisal , so far !!
Glad you are able to get out..
Sláinte! Enjoying a Guinness Blonde from land-locked central Texas.
"Nothing is more intriguing than a Blond with a dark past"
Thank you for sharing this and many of your other sailng experiences. Love it!
Can I make a suggestion you need to be the sailing podcast (David and Carina Anderson out of Australia - Twitter - twitter.com/sailingpodcast) you have tons of stories to tell from a life time of sailing before youtube came along. If we can't get out on the water (here in South Carolina they closed all the boat ramps) hearing about your past exploits will be something to hang onto. Just a humble suggestion.
We here in Yucalpeten Mexico (21.2760291, -89.7030402) can’t sail. The port is closed for turistic and recreational vessels. Any one who try to scape is “hunting” by drones or helicopter! And invite to return port or home.... well, waiting summer... hopefully
I have the utmost’s respect for your sailing knowledge sir, however I must tell you that I am a bit sad to learn that you hang your paper towel roll backwards. ( upside down?) cheers anyhow.
Hi Christian, I've developed an interest in sailing after watching your videos. My wife isn't as excited as I am just yet. Especially about being alone with me in the middle of an ocean trying to figure out what all the tangled lines are for. There's so much to learn about sailing and I appreciate the way in which you focus on what's important. Thanks! When the weather and Covid conditions improve here in Germany, I plan on taking my first sailing lessons. On a Jolle, at first, which is German for Dinghy, before I move up to something bigger.
Now on the other side of the "great isolation" I am so glad I did not see this video before now out of the grief of hearing, "for the duration". Thank you for this wonderful informative and inspirational channel, Christian. I began sailing at 62 through OCC school of Sailing and Seamanship. I thought I was too old a female and called to cancel my course with that feeble excuse when the woman answering the phone said, "What the heck, I'm 67, get in here."
Christian what you were about to say "... I don't think so, we have to use common sense..." is absolutely right. The world has gone safety mad, fuelled by social media, news outlets desperate for 24 hour news and politicians scared of everything. We must realise that only a tiny proportion of the world's population will be fatally affected (less than 0.005 percent in fact based on current rates). There is a huge different between being alive and living... thanks as always for your videos.
It's simple, you go there, you go through the marina you come home. Any contact between people increases the peak. Your nation is heading for a peak that will overwhelm your health service. I'm in the UK, locked down. We're told not to sunbathe. But as the majority of Brits are following government advice I am hopefull or ITU's will cope. Forget 'common sense' as a nation you need to lock down now. I'm a doctor and have lost colleagues because people think they no better, follow the science.
