I am so happy people are finally listen to Judee Sill. I got her albums out of bargin bins in NYC back in the early 70s for $1 apiece. Beautiful melodies, but nobody seemed to care much back then. Now they finally getting it.
Back in 73 late one night when I was 11, I heard Jesus a Was A Crossmaker on the radio and it saved my life (she and I had a whole lot in common) - but this version of The Donor is now my favourite song of hers, she really pours herself out into it. So much love for her. I'm no Christian and her songs are the only Christian songs I can bear to listen to ❤️
I just discovered her a couple of days ago........Howard Stern, of all people, mentioned her on his show. Imagine that!! So, I checked her out. I am totally captivated by her emotional songwriting and hauntingly beautiful voice........it's a crying shame she didn't make it big. 😔
After seeing her sing The Kiss on the Old Grey Whistle and ending up in tears, I’ve been hooked and now have her records. But what a tragic life and regarded herself as a failure.
I love The Kiss so much I purposely skip it when I listen to Heart Food. There's a great BBC documentary on here where Andy Partridge has to shut it off he's so moved by it.
She decided she didn't deserve a break because she squandered hers in "weird places." What a life. I prefer this version to the studio version with all the vocal overdubs. Here, her voice is naked, unadulterated beauty.
She didn't realize her "break" was the music? Wow. God obviously spoke through her. And Christ forgave her vices as he did those of the hordes he fraternized with. That's why he was loved. His forgiveness gave people hope.
I like the adornments of the album version as much as the vocals here, but if there was a way to combine them.....then she'd be approaching a level unmatched by anything in popular music.
That comment really solidifies how sad her story was. This song pierces me to the core. I love hearing her sing this live. The album cut is a masterpiece. What an artist.
she was so undersold it bugs me I do not trust the handlers so sad she was amazing sing it at last and forever Judi you have a new fan in me thank s for the inspiration Love your work and you
Only just discovered Judee Sill, her double CD was in my late brother's record collection of which we're cataloging. What an amazing artist and so underrated at the time. Brilliant!
When I hear her it's so intense that it helps to think that she really is still alive in her music. If I had been her friend I would never have let her die. Well, that's easy to say.
She had a rough childhood; her Father died, and her Mother remarried someone who abused her, so she left her home. She met a guy who introduced her to Heroin, also had a relationship with JD Souther, who left her for Linda Ronstadt. She also "outed" David Geffen's'homosexuality, and he, being very powerful in the Biz, had her blackballed from the Industry. She died of Heroin overdose in 1979. RIP.,
Gorgeous work, inspirational music. Thanks for posting in such great audio quality too. I'm passing along to my musical pals who probably have no idea about this woman. The magic times of music 1964-1974 ... I wish the same musical ethic prevailed today. But of course pop music now - no minor keys, no great melodies, don't test anyone's attention span, no verse-chorus-bridge-or modulations, no musical interest song-wise. Let's compress/smash it down and create music that's like an action movie
Excellent songwriting. The studio track of this is absolutely stunning. If you don't know about Judee Sill, read up on her. There are a few articles about her online, other than Wikipedia. Interesting woman, and this track, the last one on her last album, is testament to her talent.
I first heard JS many years ago on John Peel -Jesus was a cross maker. Stuck with me all my life. Such a beautiful voice and woman. So many lesser talents. Long may she shine. Jazzy John, Rathmines, Dublin, Ireland
this is great.. she sings the truth beautifully.. maybe why she couldn't stop herself talking frankly about coming out...though I think the lack of commercial success at the time may have been due to Judee being too far ahead of the curve.. this girl's music will outlive us ..love this song... it is a shame she fell out with Geffen as I would have liked to hear more of this...thanks seventeenboi for uploading.
@swatty76 Don't be dumb. Just because the music on Top 40 isn't good doesn't good music isn't still being made. And as I remember, Judee was never that popular while she was alive...

Just discovered Judee Sill - I'm enchanted. Her music and ethereal vocals are unique and magical

met her when I was 18, still in love xx
HI Geoffrey; that's so cool you met Judee; how did you meet her, what was she like?
*DARK*
Is this true?
Could you please tell us a bit more...
She decided she didn't deserve a break because she squandered hers in "weird places." What a life. I prefer this version to the studio version with all the vocal overdubs. Here, her voice is naked, unadulterated beauty.

She was way ahead of her time. i am entranced by her originality and piano skills
That intro is heartbreaking.

Most don't know of her just want to say thanks to all here
FARTHEST STAR SHINNING BRIGHT. ❤
A Beautiful soul........ Tears arrive.... I Love her
i`ve never heard any artist who was so melodically rich with and be so overlooked. Not underrated. There is a difference.
She had a rough childhood; her Father died, and her Mother remarried someone who abused her, so she left her home. @@wygakyl I wish we had at least one decent book about her life. And the recent documentary available to buy.
This must be the most unlucky talent ever. How is this beauty not a part of musical history? She was a genius.
just kills me. chills every time...
This version, like most great live performances, has something the studio version can't have.
these live recordings are such blessings! love to hear how she wrote the songs
Oh My God !
So beautiful Judee. X
Heart. Breaking.

I agree with pop gun. In fact, I am overwhelmed by the beauty of this performance
giant talent.
She was in England often! Didn't know it.
you were a beautiful soul
Wow.
even shadows come and raise a requiem

Kyrie eleison is Greek meaning Lord have mercy.
beautiful という英語はこの歌から発生したんじゃないか。
I think there's too much vocal layering on the studio cut. I prefer this pure, live track, plus, I love her preface to the song on this recording.
@swatty76 very well stated!
Two people here were freaking deaf.
d3frost 2 people here were fucking assholes, how could anyone not love this?
@imjustspecial321 My thoughts exaclty.
Can anyone post the "DONOR" from the Heartfood album? My vinyl copy is worn out.
The Doner
@swatty76

you can't throw your pearls to swine.
There's so much great music out there it's overwhelming. Take a walk.
I think she was ahead of her time!!
She’s in an elite group group now which includes Nick D and Nina
She's in her own group.
I am wondering is Judee speaking another language or is it latin?

I'll chase 'em to the bottom, 'til I've finally caught 'em
Dreams fall deep
Where voices come a-chimin', moanin' and a-rhymin'
Warning me, their words are ringin' and a-whinin', hear 'em weep
[Pre-Chorus]
Songs from so deep
While I'm sleepin', seep in
Sweepin' over me
Still the echo's achin', "Leave us not forsaken"
[Chorus]
Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison
Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison
Eleison, eleison, eleison
Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison
[Bridge]
So sad and so true
That even shadows come and hum the requiem
[Verse 2]
O waters of the moon, your vapors swirls and swoon
Your wake is wide, your wake is wide
And sorrow's like an arrow, shootin' straight and narrow
Aimin' true, its sting goes reachin' to the marrow, silence cried
