I remember Brandy playing Cinderella in a made for TV movie in the late 90s. There was ZERO outrage. It was widely watched and appreciated. Race swapping traditionally white characters for black characters didn't seem to tick people off until after YEARS of being told our daughters were not allowed to dress as Jasmine or Moana or Pocahontas for Halloween. After years of being told white people can only play white people characters and even mixed people like Bruno Mars or the Hector guy in Breaking Bad were deemed "not black enough" for their respective contributions to music and acting roles as critics claimed they were essentially in black face. Woke racists want it both ways and the hypocrisy is the real problem for those who object.

..and because they do it with characters like Ariel of the little mermaid, whose singularly most iconic characteristic is her bright red hair, and who was a character from a Danish fairytale, although she was officially of a fictional 'atlantican' ethnicity.
If they wanted to make new characters of more African ethnicities then they should actually write a new character and new story, not just slap black skin and hair on a character of another ethnicity.
The double standard is ridiculous. Could anyone imagine what they would do if someone took a famous old African story and switched the characters to be white?
They even love posting pictures of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and other famous, historical, real, white people with them race swapped to have black skin.
Again, could anyone imagine the inverse being done, black historical figures like Martin Luther King being race swapped to be white? Of course not. There would be rioting, threats, assaults, etc.
..but black privilege allows them to do that and more. It allows them to call for all white people to be killed. Again, could anyone imagine if it were white people saying that about black people?
      Absolutely not.
Those are just a couple of the privileges that black people have.
That doesn't even get into college acceptance, scholarships, hiring preference, financial aide, more where black people gets preferential treatment even if they are less qualified, and have more money than their white peers.

But Brandi wasn't actually a true race swap. She wasn't the DISNEY Cinderella. She was the ROGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN Cinderella. They are two different characters. And come on. It WAS a bit weird. I'm from a very mixed race family and even I thought that a black queen and white king making an east Asian prince was weird.

For disney characters, It depends. There are characters that are based on a culture or a group of people that have to do with the plot of the movie and there are characters who aren’t. Ariel is a mermaid she isn’t based on culture or a group of people. Her race doesn’t affect to plot or the whole point of the movie, her being a mermaid does. For example, Pocahontas is based on a group of people so therefore you can’t just change her race.

Tolkien’s work was so foundational to my view of race and people who are different from me. It helped me realize and accept that people all over the world are different and have different ways of navigating the world around them. Just like in middle earth the elves have their specialties they have their strengths and weaknesses. Their culture has biases and has intrinsic flaws. The same is true for dwarves and for men and hobbits. No one is completely free of flaws. For skilled metalworker as a dwarf can be they can be gung ho and rush into danger. They can be stubborn and dig their heels when they really probably shouldn’t. Hobbits for their resistance to power and all of their peaceful comforts. They are often naïve to the true nature of the world at large. The world is a colorful place and not allowing those colors to shine is evil. Taking a dwarf away from his forge is just as much sacrilege as burning an elf’s forest to the ground. Just the same as robbing one culture of a story to prop up another. Sauron and his ilk are the type to blur the lines between cultures and force people to go along for the sake of progress. Merry Pippin and Sam bringing back influences from other cultures is the true healthy way to disperse culture across a land. Let them speak for themselves in their own contexts so that others may reinterpret them and create more beautiful art in the process. Do not corrupt what is already there as evil does.

People don't seem to realize that racism is taught. It's taught by telling people that skin color matters. That the color of skin changes one's character or qualifications. That a person is defined not by how they behave, but by their race. That you should alter your behavior and how you interact with people based on the color of their skin. That certain skin colors warrant more respect than others. It's literally the erasure of equality.

I grew up in the deep south during the 70s, raised by parents, a father from up North and a mother from the Westcoast. My grandparents founded the Church of Christ in this town which was a multi cultural denomination. I was raised to treat each person by how they treated me as well as others, racism was not allowed in our home which made me completely different from the kids I would grow up with, it cost me friends, popularity, and exposed me to bullying and harassment but I am so thankful for the words my father said to me that I still live by "Never judge someone by what they look like judge them instead by their words and actions" I didn't know how blessed I was back then to have parents who taught me the right way to treat people but I will forever be thankful they did.

I remember always being excited for movies with those stars in them, still am excited. There are even more stars that i get excited to see in movies. New characters are what get me excited, or even older characters but if you took Will Smiths role in MiB and changed it to an asian guy.. like totally remade the movie. I would still be as mad as if they changed a white guy to a different ethnicity.
Take The Dark tower for instance, I was more mad that they changed Susan from a black woman to a whatever she was. The story takes a nose dive the second you change her to a anything else character. She was a black woman in the height of the black rights movements who got injured by a racial crime.. you can't change that and expect her character to work. Same goes with the main character..
If A character was originally written one way, then is altered to be another way its incredibly noticeable. And the fans hate it. No matter what the change is, just try keep it to what it actually is.

This is what I have been telling myself for so long. It feels like living in a alternate reality where everything could cause a controversy. I myself grew up with artists like Missy Elliot, Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child, Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson and Will Smith. Literally non came to my mind that I would never listen or watch them because they are black. Even my parents loved them. I grew up watching That's So Raven and The Cheetah Girls. I don't know what the hell happened during the American election way back in 2014 when suddenly everything felt so divided. This is why I never take the Oscars seriously anymore. That's why I hate this era of entertainment because everything feels socially backwards. Especially the era of music.

It was recent seasons of Big Brother for me that made me hate TV shows and movies because they often force representation as a focus in their media, rather than making good characters first.
I was never against minority groups in media, until now when it seems like an easy way to make me like a character, or an excuse to like someone who is designed poorly because of their group.
We should enjoy characters who are minorities, not because they are minorities. Best way I can summarize it.

We need to get back to that, because no one can take a joke anymore (on the left) and they are everything through a lens of oppression. Ace Ventura and Life of Brian are great examples of hilarious movies that people find outdated.

Can we get some Disney movies based in African culture? Because I would watch those. I love to learn folklore from other cultures. Princess and the Frog was one of my favorite Disney movies. Moana was the only thing my son would watch for TWO YEARS. I had a series of Gerald McDermott books based on folklore when I was younger: Raven, Anansi the Spider, Arrow to the Sun, among others. A series of shorts (or even full movies) with actors of the proper ethnicity would be absolutely awesome.

Will Smith came soon after. Eddie Murphy saved SNL and was a hugr box office draw at theatres and comedy clubs. Athletes like Magic Johnson, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan were huge. These are guys who shaped the culture 30 to 40 years ago. And people now are acting like this never happened.

Will Smith played a race swapped Agent J in MIB. The original comic published by Malibu, J was a white guy. Same for Wild Wild West.
Maybe it's requires a quad-graph to demonstrate where you can, can't, or take risk at race swapping. Also, the sliding scale of 'if you swap, what would people roll with'.
For example: You can't race swap Black Panther, Clark Kent, or Shang Chi.
You can race swap Nick Fury, Maxwell Lord, and a variety supporting characters.
Risky swaps Moon Knight (seems to have paid off), The Octopuss (The Spirit--- failed miserably).

The only stance I would have against casting an actor that’s not race appropriate is if it is a historical piece. For example, if they did a film about MLK and cast an Asian actor, or JFK and had an African actor portray him. This is not about being inclusive, it’s about accuracy. For example, we now have a generation of brits that thought Anne Boleyn was of African decent, when there is no way a person of colour would be a crowned Monarch in that age.

Yeah, I'm old enough to remember when the entertainment industry could actually make good, original stories and watchable tv/movies featuring characters of different races. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (mostly black) and every incarnation of Star Trek each had at least one main character who was black and in the case of TOS, VOY, ENT, another who was Asian. And those are just two examples I can think of off the top of my head.
