I have the album this is from ~ 'not fade away [remembering buddy holly]'(The title is all lower-case for some reason)~ This is from the booklet about this song: 'Two months after Holly and The Crickets initially recorded "Maybe Baby" came the Bo-Diddlyesque "Not Fade Away." With all the brashness that only a young Texan on the brink of stardom could muster, Holly's composition boasted, "My love's bigger than a Cadillac...." Here, the song has been contributed by none other than The Crickets, who've been joined by their musical soulmates, The Band, whose founding drummer Levon Helm takes charge of the vocals with his Arkansas-bred drawl. On the Clovis recording, Jerry Allison played drums on nothing more than a cardboard box; here, flanked by his old rhthym partner, Joe B. Mauldin, he returns to beat the box once again. Sonnt Curtis does the guirar honors, and he is joined by the band's guitarist Jim Weider, bassis Rick Danko, organist Garth Hudson, pianist Richard Bell, and percussionist Randy Ciarlante. The Crickets lead the background vocals and the distinctive, unforgettable chorus which has been immortalized by everyone from the Rolling Stones to the Grateful Dead to Bruce Springsteen.'
that's a lot of humility to say (pardon my imprecise phrasing) "me leaving the band meant Buddy taking over lead guitar & that's when they got so good".
Still rock this cd....2024
Loved this album from the time i bought it! Everybody did a Awsume Job on it, & of course Levon, & the Crickets were Awsume together on this song!
"I wanna play 'Not Fade Away' and use three sets of drums. That'll be just right."
Lawd, we miss you Levon! and Rick and Richard!
"There'll never be another like, Levon Helm.."

Cool
To quote JI who in turn quotes Paul McCartney .... "if it wasn't for The Crickets there would be no Beatles". That will do me.
Thanks!
Is there a finished cut of this song?

great! vid!
this is really Bo Diddley beat. Don't get me wrong I love the Crickets and Levon very much and have for 60 years, but that is deffinitly Bos rythem
Of course it is. Buddy Holly himself would've told you the same thing. Very distinctive rhythm, originated by Bo Diddley.
Shave and a haircut. Six bits.
@@skullring621 love that expression....economy o' lyrics...🙂
Anybody hsve full recording?
Top 4 greatest singing drummers 1 Levon Helm 2 Karen Carpenter Tied for 3 Ringo Star and Don Henley. Just my opinion.

The only other Not Fade was performed by the Grateful Dead.. I love The Band and Lavon.. Thanks for this..
I think Levon was pretty sick during that time.
He sounds hoarse. He did lots of drugs but the legal one killed him.
scottybentertainment influenced by Buddy Holly and the crickets.
