Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

The pizza oven location.... closer to the kitchen does make sense, however, the pizza oven is going to be very hot. So that speaks to placing it near that wheel barrow. It would also release the smoke away from the house. For that location out by the wheel barrow you can have a nice looking patio cart to wheel tools and ingredients out to that location. And, I want a hand pie. I want three actually with vanilla ice cream. I want to be unable to walk or speak. Yes that is the ticket. The goats were super cute. Head butting and the doelings chasing chickens. And Winston so nicely greeting them.

Well, it gets hot there in Arizona and the pizza oven gets even hotter. Do you really want to have it next to the house? Maybe a pizza oven near the bridge where he wants it AND then a built in fire pit where you want the pizza oven that matches the pizza oven. You can then put chairs around it? Expand the rock patio a little bit? Oooo, ooo, make rock benches, and the chairs stay around the table!?
I like the area where Kevin pointed out because it's not so close to the house and it doesn't look so cluttered but also being where Kevin had pointed out it's really a talking point or a really pretty piece in its own right and you could have it too close to the house it kind of takes away from the beauty of it
Do you really want the heat from a pizza oven that near wheat you'll be hanging out or entertaining? I'd think added heat would be the last thing you'd want in the hang out area!
That was what I thought. When I saw it was 108* there. Would not want to add heat near the house. But I think it gets cooler at night. So might be nice in the 3 months it's not burning up.

I agree with Kevin on the pizza oven location. Those things burn really hot and take a while to cool down. Excited to see the new build.

If you put the pizza oven where you want it, it'll block your view from the door. If you put it back a little it will be less intrusive. I'd put it at the corner of the tarp further from the door or on the other side nearer the garden

Oh yeah, dogs that don’t have webbed toes generally hate the water. I had a water dog. Anybody with a dog(s) I met on the trails if they were webby, they swam. If they weren’t webby, they barked from the shore. There were exceptions to the rule. I’m sure Kevin’s patience and care makes Salem feel safe!! Maybe she will be a great swimmer!!
My poodle loves swimming and water and all of that and my labradoodle will hold pee in for days if it rains so she doesn’t have to get her pretty paws wet
All our dogs have loved to swim none of them were water breeds. My current dog is a border collie Doberman mix who would swim until he drowned if I let him.
Same my dog was hesitant to swim as a pup but once she followed another dog in at age 2 she loved it and now you can't get her out. Shepherd-collie x

Hold Salem so she's swimming but keep supporting her till she's calmly swimming. That's how we taught my boy. He's on the big side as well ~80lbs.

Re placement of the pizza oven. Everyone is talking about closer or farther from the house - I think farther is better. But do you also have to consider proximity to the sunshade over the pond - not so close that heat will move toward the pond and hang around under the sunshade? Maybe a Kevin Craft to rig a powered vent to send heat up & out? (after the pizza's done of course!)
The "I guess" Kevin said about the pizza oven was really him saying "ok honey, I'll do what you want even though I don't particularly agree". That's a good hubby right there lmao!

The pizza oven needs to be close to where you entertain guests and convenient enough to go inside. There are videos on line of how to build a pizza oven I would suggest going with that.

my opinion is the pizza oven should be by the wheel barrel. It would be in the way of the door of the garage or shed there. You would have to go around it constantly and as your other commenter said " It does get really hot"'. The one I saw you wanting to make really looks big also. But ultimatetly it's your decision.
I think I’d put it further from the house because of the heat. It’s already so hot there won’t the heat be too much if you put it close to the house?

Pizza oven is very pretty! Wherever you put it, I place it so the opening of the oven is facing you when you go outside. It’s nice for the chef to face the guests or the pond when you’re outside, but the prettiest side of the oven is the open side, and you’ll be seeing the oven more than you’ll actually use it. So it needs to be functional but also look its best.
The way into most dog’s brains is treats. Try using treats when training Salem to the water. Show them to her when Kevin picks her up and takes her into the water but actually give them to her when Kevin is holding her in the water. Once she has more confidence you can ask her to swim out to get the treat.
Try playing fetch/throw and grab near the pool/pond and throw it in the water haha

Try the crimping that Cornish pasties have for your hand pies. It’s fairly simple and your pies won’t spill anymore.

I heard that if you take a rag and rub it on the “stinky bits” of your buck and then rub that on the new does the established does will like them a little better. I haven’t needed to do it yet but it’s worth a shot!

If I'm looking watching your videos on the other side of the pond I like it there because it's out of The View of all your buildings and I like to sit at the deck and look at that and look out at the pizza oven so my vote is on the other side of the pond
Kevin's spot will block the view of the pasture. Danelle's spot will block the view of the feed bags. Though I think it'd be better a few feet further from the house, to widen the pathway against the house so it doesn't end up a narrow alley, like the space behind the chicken coop and birthing area.

I advise that with the pie crusts for the hand pies, that you use a fork to press the edges together - it'll bind the pastry together better, hopefully preventing or at least reducing spillout

Have you thought about crimping the edges with a fork on the hand pies? That way it forms a lil barrier so the filling doesn’t spill out

I would put the pizza oven where the wheelbarrow is. It's a bit more out of the way there and have more space around it.
I do think the pizza oven closer to the house, where you'll be prepping the pizzas, will be a better option.

I think so too....I'm sure they have done all the research, but as BLASTED HOT as it is, would any of the heat be absorbed toward the house!! I know those bricks get hot throughout the opening and the base.....what an awesome idea though!!
Don't block your view of the back yard! I think Danell is right. The animals would be my joy. What I want to look at when I'm sitting in the back yard.
My poodle used to hate swimming she would watch us from the pool deck and chase us out of the water. Everyday we would get her in by picking her up (btw she is a standard poodle) and putting her in the water. After a few days of doing that we all got in and kept saying come here and encouraging her and finally she jumped in on her own so we all got really excited then she kept jumping in now the second we get outside to the pool area she jumps right in. But Salem could also be like my other dog who doesn’t want to get her perfect hair wet🤣
DaNelles spot for the pizza oven might close the space up a bit too much. That openess would be lost with such a large structure there.
Maybe put a tent or something lighter there for a day or so to see if it closes in the space too much.
VERY GOOD POINT!!! They should place something similarly large there to test it for aesthetics/view ... and also consider the heat, especially getting trapped under the sun shades. The further from the rest area and the house the better.
