Here is a different soft and fluffy chemo cap that I designed for the winter months. (I do not recommend this for a patient that has a blistered head. The folks at the Cancer Center said that chemo patients would enjoy and wear them during the winter months.)

As a stage 4 cancer survivor and crocheter, I've started making some to donate to the cancer center I went to. I found many that I came across during treatment were just too itchy and irritating on my freshly bald head. I ended using flannel squares like a bandana. I saw a lot donated that looked like red heart super saver. Even with washing and fabric softener it was just too itchy. Lion brand feels like butta, truboo, and the bernat fleece yarns are great. Caron simply soft was ok. Most baby yarns are ok. Thank you for doing these. They mean a lot to so many.

When I was at the Cancer Center for an appointment, I asked them what was needed. They let me look through the donations, and you are right...there were some really scratchy yarns.
I am glad you told me about Caron Simply Soft. It does seem like it could be a little irritating. I will try the Feels Like Buttah next. I have a man's chemo cap designed, I just need to write the pattern and make the video.
I made a winter chemo cap with Pipsqueak. It has a turned up brim. It won't work if your head is blistered as there is too much fuzz, but they nurses told me that they thought it would be a good thing to donate.
I am curious about your flannel squares. Did you tie them like a Doo Rag? I am seamstress also, and I wonder if that would be a good thing to donate?
Or maybe a beanie that is sewn? I need to look into that. Any advice will be gladly received.

@Krissys Over The Mountain Crochet And Crafts I'm so sorry I don't know why I am just seeing this. The flannel squares were mostly just a big square that I folded over in a triangle and wore I guess like Rosie the Riveter if you remember that old WW2 picture, or with the tie in the back and tuck the corner underneath it. I couldn't crochet myself anything as the chemo gave me horrible nueropathy. My mother-in-law made me one with the camel stitch in the round like a headband, and then hdc in decreases to close up the top in an ivory fleece yarn. That was great for winter. One sew project I think would be great if you can get the fabric at a good deal, is an infinite scarf out of a stretchy fabric. The two I bought were very thin, almost gauze like, but stretchy. I wrapped it around my head twice (so one twist) and then gathered it all in the back into a bun. I probably got the most compliments out of that. By the time I got to the end of treatment I was too sick to care what I looked like or that narly radiation burns showed all over my head, but I was stage 4 and fighting to survive basically. Not something I'd wish on anyone. I'm 5 years out and treatment left me disabled, but I'm still here. 🙂
Thank you letting me know on the types of yarns that would help them to feel better and not itch too much with losing their hair is damage enough from the treatment .... don't need to have it itch.....

Anyway...are you trying to tell me that you have 20 dc stitches instead of 21? Remember the ch4 counts as a dc.

I am new to crocheting. Your video makes it look so easy to do. Can't wait to try it. I have a dumb question. They say we are to wash the yarn. Is that before we do the project or after the project is done?

I am so happy you are going to try this easy chemo cap. What a blessing that you are going to be making these for others who are in need. I agree the hats need to be washed. With this particular yarn and most yarns, you will want to lay it flat to dry. I don't recommend putting the hat in the dryer.
I don't recommend washing the "yarn" before crocheting the hat. I have heard from others who have tried it that it creates a lot of knots.

Can I use any # 4 yarn not making for cancer patient? Or will it be to big?
You can give it a go. I would play with the hook size, maybe go down one size? Keep in mind that this hat was designed for those going through chemo, so it's a bit on the small side anyway. Depending on your head size it might come out perfect for you.
Can I use soft #4 weight cotton yarn?
You may get a larger hat if you do.

You can send them to any hospital in Puerto Rico that provides Cancer Care.
No one who has lost their hair wants a cap where you can see their bald head...something solid made from a very soft natural fiber. Something made from Bamboo for example. If it is winter, go for the acrylics, but something really soft.
When you battle breast cancer they put you on a hormone blocker that gives terrible hot flashes. So there is a need for a cooling type of cap. I also have designed many chemo caps that are not mesh.
I recommend Lion Brand Coboo or other extremely soft cottons, as your skin becomes so touchy, that acrylic can be unbearable for some. So I agree, bamboo yarn is wonderful.
Thank you for your input Debbie. Battling Cancer is not fun. I am just trying to provide as many alternative caps as possible for those in need.
You do not know that. People are different. If it's cooler or a man might like this. Don't knock something unless you know for sure. Some woman prefer to just go bald and wear nothing and that's okay.
