What we are learning in our EMT basic class right now is that the rule is to suction no longer than 10 seconds, unless the patient continues vomiting. Then you suction as quickly as possible for as long as they are vomiting. We have the Pearson textbook and this is directly from there
Totally agree! As lead author of that textbook, I congratulate you and your educator for knowing this! The question on this Jeopardy talked about persistent vomiting so "as long as it takes to remove the vomit" is correct. If you can get it all in 10 or 15 seconds, great. But never, ever ventilate foreign material into the lungs that could have been suctioned.
